Sum 41 in Concert

Two-time Juno Award winners Sum 41 rode the crest of the nu-metal wave in the early 2000s with a catchy blend of punk, rap and metal elements woven into their music. They were able to pinpoint some of the most infectious characteristics of popular genres and meld them into a hybrid that won them throngs of fans who were eager for more. Tickets to their concerts traditionally sell out fast, as fans don't want to miss the chance to jump up with the band and request songs through the extra microphone that seems to just float around the stage. The band orchestrates this circus-like scenario night after night on tour and even indulges in a cover or two by Judas Priest or Iron Maiden —complete with drum solos. Incidentally, the band was lucky enough to borrow drummer Tommy Lee from Motley Crue for a stretch between 2001 and 2003. Their August 2011 release Sum 41 Live at the House of Blues boasts plenty of live concert antics and features the hit songs "Underclass Hero," "Motivation" and "Fat Lip."

The band hails from Ajax, Ontario, Canada and is fronted by lead singer, rhythm guitarist and primary songwriter Deryck Whibley. They began in 1996 as a NOFX cover band called Kaspir but eventually changed their name for a high-profile show opening for Supernova. They signed an international record deal with Island Records in 1999, which resulted in their 2001 debut release All Killer, No Filler. They embarked on a relentless journey of touring and songwriting that led to the 2002 release of Does This Look Infected?, 2004's Chuck, 2007's Underclass Hero and the 2011 release Screaming Bloody Murder, with subsequent tours. Sum 41 continues this tradition with a string of Canadian tour dates scheduled for the spring of 2014.

Sum 41 is touring on the Rockstar Energy Drink DISRUPT Festival in 2019. The touring festival features unique lineups in each city, including The Used, Thrice, Circa Survive, Sum 41, The Story So Far, Atreyu, Sleeping With Sirens, Andy Black, and more.

Can’t wait to see as Headliner

    by S. M. on 8/26/23

I’ve waited my entire life to be able to see Sum41 and I finally got a taste with Simple Plan and The Offspring. What a show, even though the last song got cut midway. I cannot wait to see them on their Headlining tour. I’ll be front and center with my kids.

Sitting through this until the headliner

by Generally into 90s music but meh on 8/8/23

Keeps shifting off key and slowing down the beat to noticeably slower speeds. This is happening to all songs as they progress through the set list.. Simple Plan before them did a great job so it’s definitely not the venue.

My first sum 41 concert and my first concert where I’m dead in front, and in the middle. I was able to get a guitar pick from deryck after still waiting & a water bottle from simple plan!!

Very sad that I couldn’t see anything

by Tiff32 on 8/30/22Stone Pony Summer Stage - Asbury Park

The event ticket showed the gates opened at 5 but they didn’t open until 5:30. Got in and saw the opener perfectly fine. Left our spot for a few moments to get a picture with set it off and we couldn’t get to a spot where we could see a thing! We traveled hours to be there and spent money on a hotel but ended up leaving after sum 41 and listened to simple plan from the boardwalk.

    Amazing Show!

by Brandofanta on 8/30/22Stone Pony Summer Stage - Asbury Park

All three bands sounded amazing, Sum41 looked and sounded just like how I would have imagined them in the early 2000s! I will definitely be seeing them again in future!

    Headliners we’re great!

by Jdr222 on 8/30/22Stone Pony Summer Stage - Asbury Park

Sum 41 and simple plan were absolutely great! I couldn’t have asked for better performances. However the opening band was very disappointing. The summer stage is always a great time and venue. I really appreciated the longer set times for the headlines since in the past I’ve seen two headlining bands play the same night and one only got a small amount of time to play.

Outstanding show! Sum41 and simple plan sounded great. I have been wanting to see them since I was 13 and finally at 31 I got to rock out with them! Would 100% recommend seeing them live.

Overall, a fantastic summer concert by the ocean

by TheMartialOne on 8/29/22Stone Pony Summer Stage - Asbury Park

Only 2 negatives come to mind: 1) venue entry process. Gates opened at 5:30...but the show was also listed as *starting* at 5:30. Entry volume was also very limited - 1 (maybe 2?) general access lines, and a VIP line, so 5:30 gate time became 5:45-6pm entry. 2) attendees are facing directly West to view the stage. Summer evening concert means - the sun is setting directly in your eyes. We lucked out for part of the show, in that a puffy cloud wandered by and blocked the sun for ~30 minutes. Maybe hang a partially see-through mesh curtain behind the stage? Not to totally block the sky but at least avoid retinal damage :-D Beyond that - it was a friggin' fantastic time. Three great bands, summer ocean breeze, decently accessible bars and portapotties.

    HOT

by Huh? on 8/23/22Revolution Concert House & Event Center - Garden City

The bands were great! The venue sucked!! The ambient temp in the building was 97 degrees!! Even the bands complaint about it! They have fans mounted to the walls but not a single one was turned on. I’ll be thinking long and hard abut ever buying tickets to the venue again.

    EPIC

by Aly Vibes on 8/22/22Fillmore Auditorium (Denver) - Denver

This show was incredible. I've seen sum 41 twice before and they just keep getting better and better. First time seeing simple plan and they did not disappoint. I wish the merch was cheaper, $40 for 1 t-shirt is just crazy. I also wish the two bands sang their collab song together on stage. Why wouldn't they perform ruin my life while touring together? Other than that, it was a totally epic show.
