About

After forming in 1961 in Chicago, Illinois, while in high school, Styx steadily toured and expanded from a three-piece to a quintet during the 60s, signing with local record label Wooden Nickel Records in 1972, and releasing their self-titled debut that year. 1973’s Styx II and The Serpent Is Rising followed, as well as 1974’s Man of Miracles, further refining their output as they transitioned from straight-forward rock n roll into a more progressive rock, incorporating psychedelic flourishes and experimental structuring, as well as hard rock guitars, powerful ballads and theatrical elements. They signed with A&M Records, releasing Equinox in 1975, and subsequently 1976’s Crystal Ball and 1977’s The Grand Illusion, their breakout album that sold over 3 million copies propelled by singles Come Sail Away and Fooling Yourself. In 1981, Styx released Paradise Theatre, a concept album chronicling the fictional rise and fall of the Chicago theatre, which became their fourth consecutive triple-platinum album, reached #1 on the Billboard charts, and spawned five singles, including top ten hits The Best of Times and Too Much Time on My Hands. Next was 1983’s full-fledged rock opera Kilroy Was Here, which featured synthesizer and vocoder-driven Mr. Roboto and the power ballad Don’t Let It End. Following a half-decade separation in the 80s and a brief break-up in the 90s, Styx’s 1996 tour Return to Paradise was a success, and since then have continued releasing albums and satisfying ticket holders at concerts around the world with the likes of Def Leppard, Foreigner and Boston. Over the course of their career, Styx has played many famous venues, like Bank of New Hampshire Pavilion and Madison Square Garden.

    Great concert

by Joey on 5/24/24Place Bell - Laval

Although the opening act was somewhat boring and did not fit the genre or type of music to open for a historic band like Styx, the concert was great. The acoustics and the place bell were much better than at the bell centre. The venue was smaller and the atmosphere amazing. Larry Gowan was energetic, entertaining and although not an original member from the seventies he and the band put on A hell of a show. It was nice to see some artists like Tommy Shaw still wearing the long hair from the seventies and eighties. A sign of a true rocker.

Gowan was in fine form , his voice is one of not the best to come up of Canada. Exceptional drummer , Tommy Shaw and the rest of the band was awesome. All in all a great time spent with a great band.

    Great Show!

by MTLboy on 5/24/24Place Bell - Laval

It was a great show. I had never seen Styx before and it exceeded my expectations. They are all great musicians and it was a great vibe. I wasn’t sure how I would feel about Gowan taking D. DeYoung’s place but he was fantastic. He has a great voice, he’s a great performer and he stayed true to the songs. I really recommend seeing the show. The only reason I didn’t give a 5-star rating is because I thought the show was a little short at 1hr-40mins. It could have been another 15-20 mins longer.

    Stellar show!!!

    by TonyH5777 on 5/23/24Scotiabank Centre - Halifax

Incredible concert! The stage was perfect for the set, providing a great light show and a backdrop that reinforced the music but was not overwhelming and allowed the band to roam and play freely. The sound was a good powerful volume and clear with no distortion. The performance was outstanding to say the least, I didn’t want it to end!!

    Amazing Energizing Show

by Angus Sheepsbane on 5/22/24Scotiabank Centre - Halifax

This was my first time seeing the band Styx and I was blown away! I, and the rest of the crowd, were energized and on our feet the entire time, singing along with all the hits. Considering the median age of the crowd this was an exceptional accomplishment. the band and especially the lead singer, Lawrence Gowan, are consummate and tireless showmen. No need for glitz and special effects, the sheer talent and music was enough to transport us all! Seeing Styx live in concert is a life experience not to be missed!

    Styx in Halifax

by Sweezie on 5/22/24Scotiabank Centre - Halifax

Rolling into Halifax at 8pm, heard Styx was playing at the Scotia Arena. Ordered great tickets while walking to the arena and they arrived on my phone just minutes later in time to enter during the opening number. Band was great and Lawrence Gowan is a personal fave so we enjoyed the show immensely. I would have liked to see them play a little longer though.

    Absolutely AMAZING

by EASTCOAST on 5/22/24Scotiabank Centre - Halifax

Was a last minute decision to go, and so glad I did, STYX was phenomenal, amazing song list hope to see them back again! From the opening song my friend and I looked at each other, jaws dropped, he’s like “it’s like listening to the LP as a kid!” Gowans personal touch and local connection sealed the deal. Highly recommended!!!!!
