About

After forming in 1961 in Chicago, Illinois, while in high school, Styx steadily toured and expanded from a three-piece to a quintet during the 60s, signing with local record label Wooden Nickel Records in 1972, and releasing their self-titled debut that year. 1973’s Styx II and The Serpent Is Rising followed, as well as 1974’s Man of Miracles, further refining their output as they transitioned from straight-forward rock n roll into a more progressive rock, incorporating psychedelic flourishes and experimental structuring, as well as hard rock guitars, powerful ballads and theatrical elements. They signed with A&M Records, releasing Equinox in 1975, and subsequently 1976’s Crystal Ball and 1977’s The Grand Illusion, their breakout album that sold over 3 million copies propelled by singles Come Sail Away and Fooling Yourself. In 1981, Styx released Paradise Theatre, a concept album chronicling the fictional rise and fall of the Chicago theatre, which became their fourth consecutive triple-platinum album, reached #1 on the Billboard charts, and spawned five singles, including top ten hits The Best of Times and Too Much Time on My Hands. Next was 1983’s full-fledged rock opera Kilroy Was Here, which featured synthesizer and vocoder-driven Mr. Roboto and the power ballad Don’t Let It End. Following a half-decade separation in the 80s and a brief break-up in the 90s, Styx’s 1996 tour Return to Paradise was a success, and since then have continued releasing albums and satisfying ticket holders at concerts around the world with the likes of Def Leppard, Foreigner and Boston. Over the course of their career, Styx has played many famous venues, like Bank of New Hampshire Pavilion and Madison Square Garden.

by mamacroz on 7/14/09Woodlands Pavilion - Woodlands

Both groups put on one fantastic show. I have seen each band three times now and will go again as many times as I can! Great entertainers, great show, and the best of classic rock!!

Styx, REO with 38 Special -- AWESOME!

by kjanbo on 7/14/09Woodlands Pavilion - Woodlands

They, like the rest of us, may have aged a bit, but are every bit as good as they were in the 70's and 80's. The only thing I missed were some of the Styx ballads formerly sung by Dennis De Young, but absent that, they sounded fabulous and put on a great show. REO Speedwagon and 38 Special also delivered exactly what I had hoped for. Definitely will go see these bands again!

Styx, REO & .38 Special haven't lost their touch

by RDProp on 7/14/09Woodlands Pavilion - Woodlands

My favorite group was REO Speedwagon, with .38 Special barely behind. They played their old favorites and it brought back great memories. They were energetic and put on a great show. I'm not a huge Styx fan to begin with so I didn't care for the head-banging rockin' very much that they ended the show with. I would have liked to hear more of their good older favorites that made them popular.

    Awesome

by Tredd on 7/14/09Woodlands Pavilion - Woodlands

Seeing these three great bands together was a real treat. I expect perfection from Styx and REO Speedwagon and of course that's what I got. These two legends never disappoint. I was really surprised at how awesome .38 special was. I had never seen them in concert before and will definitely see them again. The highlight of the show was seeing all three bands sing their song "Can't stop rockin". Great show.

    Styx, REO worth seeing.

by SubZroMan on 7/14/09Woodlands Pavilion - Woodlands

I have seen Styx and REO Speedwagon before, but at this certain event they seemed a small bit lacking. Of course the bands played their most loved hits, which were awesome if you could hear them above the singing crowd. Overall the sets were too short and the music not loud enough. The best performance of Styx that stands in my mind is when they opened for Boston nearly a year ago. Go see 'em, it is definitely worth the cheap ticket prices, however, if you really want the experience, you better be closer than lawn seating

    The Concert Was Great!

    by Melisa2009 on 7/14/09Woodlands Pavilion - Woodlands

The only disappointing thing was that Styx did not play "Babe". I LOVE that song and wanted to hear it and could not believe they didn't play it! I loved the concert though and the lawn seats were great, very relaxing. I can't wait to go back.

Played All of the Songs You Wanted To Hear!

by saywinn on 7/14/09Woodlands Pavilion - Woodlands

I am always hesistant when going to see an older band because you never know if they will play the songs you know and love, or concentrate on new music as they try to launch a new album. I don't mind a couple of new songs...but I generally go and see the older bands because I love their old stuff. REO, Styx and .38 Special played EVERYTHING I wanted to hear. THe sound was great!

    STYX rules!

by beezy07 on 7/14/09Save Mart Center - Fresno

I think STYX really played to the crowd and got my blood pumping! REO Speedwagon and 38 special were good also; just not as good as styx!

Styx & REO Speedwagon - great music!

by Kuma80s on 7/13/09NOKIA Theatre LA LIVE - Los Angeles

2nd time on Styx. Always the best, very energeric, covering all the major songs. Just bring me back the memories of my youth : ) I want to see them at least once a year! REO was first concert for me. I could clearly see that they were very happy to be performing. I never realized how much I liked their music too! Definately will go back to see them again!

One of THE BEST OVERALL concerts I have been to !!

by SpunkyT on 7/13/09Save Mart Center - Fresno

Each group equally sounded very good. Played a great mix of all their hits and new music. Also started on time and the length was just right. The crowd was enthusiastic but respectable, a HUGE point to me as I attended too many concerts that drunk and unruly spectators have ruined for others around them. I would go again to see them absolutely!!

Good times but the same time a let down

by HappyDays on 7/13/09NOKIA Theatre LA LIVE - Los Angeles

The concert was really great. Since it was an indoor venue, I figured that I would not have to worry about smoke (of any kind), was I wrong. Being 6 months pregnant, needing to stand in the back of the theatre to get away from the smoke, when my seats were only 5 rows from the stage, for all but two of the songs that Styx preformed, was not quite what I was hoping for.

Styx, REO Speedwagon and 38 Special WOW!!!!

by Valerion64 on 7/13/09Save Mart Center - Fresno

These 3 groups together was one of the best events I've ever seen and heard. Their sound was excellent and they have not lost any of the drive that put them on the top of the charts back in the day. If you like even one of these bands this is a must see concert. Great job by all 3 bands and a fun evening for everyone who went. Kudos!!

Styx, REO and .38 special rock trio

by Davids918 on 7/13/09NOKIA Theatre LA LIVE - Los Angeles

Very good sets by all 3 bands. Helps that they're actual musicians who've played together for a lengthy amount of time -- it shows. Good vocals by all 3 bands too. Covered most of the top hits. REO was very strong set. It was night of good old-fashioned rock and roll.
