About

STURGILL SIMPSON IN CONCERT:

Country singer-songwriter Sturgill Simpson stays true to his Appalachian roots with his no-frills singing style and boot-stomping live shows. His rocking sound pays homage to country outlaws like Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings, but never feels like imitation -- Simpson's cerebral lyrics and psychedelic production touches keep the music firmly grounded in the present. Whether he's extolling the virtues of a "Life of Sin" or playing his unique cover of When In Rome's "The Promise", Simpson always impresses with his authentic vocals, smart songwriting, and unbeatable energy on tour.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Sturgill Simpson was born and raised in Kentucky, where he began playing the guitar at age eight. He formed the bluegrass band Sunday Valley in 2004, releasing an album and touring with the band before relocating to Nashville to pursue a solo career. He self-released his debut album High Top Mountain in 2013, receiving praise from critics for his updated approach to the classic outlaw country sound.  His sophomore album Metamodern Sounds in Country Music followed in 2014, expanding both his lyrical range and sonic palette with heady explorations of the human experience and an array of psychedelic production flourishes. A passionate performer with a genuine country rock sound, Sturgill continues to do Kentucky proud on his unforgettable concert tours.

Jason Isbell and Sturgill Simpson were awesome!!!

by Linsee on 1/13/15Global Event Center at WinStar World Casino and Resort - Thackerville

This was my first and last concert at Winstar. The concert was awesome, the location was NOT! The smoke was unbearable and while there is no smoking in the "Event Center", the doors were open 1 1/2 hours before the concert and during intermission & the smoke came in.

    Jason was a CLASS ACT!

by Sumanthie on 1/13/15Global Event Center at WinStar World Casino and Resort - Thackerville

Jason Isbell put on an unforgetable concert!!!! His whole operation is professional- all the way, from the sound checks to the musicians, to the performer himself!!! This man is a wonderful, intelligent song writer. We happened on to him by accident. While switching channels on tv, we came across him performing on "Live from the Lincoln Center" and were immediately drawn to his vocals. We have become big fans! Sturgill, to me, was what you might hear in the local honky tonk. The sound was messed up, so that you could not hear the words of his songs. It's a good band, but they need to get someone qualified to do their sound!

    Sturgill Simpson is music's savior

by SWhite85 on 1/13/15Global Event Center at WinStar World Casino and Resort - Thackerville

Sturgill Simpson is the epitome of talent and entertainment. His guitarist is out of control amazing and the show that those two put on together can not be beaten by any other artist in the industry today. Myself and half the audience couldn't understand why Sturgill was only opening & not headlining. Hopefully that changes very soon.

    Co-Headliners

by XXXXXJXXXXX on 1/13/15Global Event Center at WinStar World Casino and Resort - Thackerville

This was not billed to show "co-headliner" status in an obvious way. Completely missed Simpson since he was on first, but his face is on the ad and his name is the predominant one in all adds.

    Poor Scheduling

by GMachado on 1/13/15Global Event Center at WinStar World Casino and Resort - Thackerville

Typically the headliner plays last, but at this concert Sturgill played first and we missed it. We were trying to time it to hear Sturgill and be able to gamble a little bit. Not very happy with the waste of money on the seats to have the set schedule done in an other than usual way.

    Sturgill is the real deal.

by Lahree510 on 1/13/15Global Event Center at WinStar World Casino and Resort - Thackerville

Simply put, Sturgill Simpson is the best band going They blew the doors off and left everyone clamoring for more. No disrespect to Jason Isbel as I do know he's a good songwriter, but there was nothing he could do to match what Sturgill brought to the stage.

Became a fan when I saw him on tour with Dwight Yoakam. I was impressed then, but I was blown away last night. The energy and musicianship were outstanding. I really enjoyed the venue as well.

Sturgill on the way to National stardom

by Anonymous on 8/31/14Brighton Music Hall - Boston

Great re-birth of Country Music in the tones of Waylon. Great musicians with special notation of lead guitar called "Joe" from Estonia. Outstanding addition to the core. As Sturgill gains working capital he might benefit from his own sound board operator. Strong recommendation for this show. Hope he gets some exposure when out west. True country fans will applaud Sturgill's arrival on the scene and push for his continued success. Can't wait for his next album.

    Sturgill Simpson -Better than ever

by JRHolt on 8/31/14Brighton Music Hall - Boston

On Thursday night at the Brighton Music Hall I heard and saw a performance that was just brilliant. Laur Joamets performance on lead guitar was smokin' and the rock solid bass of Kevin Black and percussion work of Miles Miller was spot on. This was the third time in a about a year that I have witnessed their performance live and Sturgill and the boys have never sounded better. To say the show was awesome would be a gross understatement. In just under 2 hours time these guys burned down the joint! I first heard and met Sturgill Simpson in Knoxville, TN., in August of 2013. He was good then- and by good, I mean good enough to sign on a major label. That however, was never apart of SS's agenda. Go see him "...in some smoky bar with bad sound and a dim lit stage" while you still can. You won't be disappointed.

Sturgill Simpson-Recycled 80’s Country Music Sound

    by sisternumber5 on 8/25/14The Birchmere - Alexandria

Sturgill Simpson’s show was a great big fat letdown. Most of the songs sounded similar and all of them reminded me of music you would have heard in a 1980’s country western bar. Simpson fluctuated between channeling the voices of Waylon Jennings and John Conlee. There is nothing new in Simpson’s music or singing style-just old ground being re-covered. It seems nostalgia may be driving the recent hype over his music. The guy playing the electric guitar in the back-up band is very good. His solos made the rest of Simpsons show endurable. Chris Jacobs, the opening act and a local from Baltimore, was the highlight of the evening. I could have listened to him all night. Jacobs is a talented singer and musician. On a few songs he played an electric three string cigar box guitar. His style of music is refreshing and inventive. Jacobs interacted well with the audience.

    Sturgill Simpson- a true talent!

by SturgillFan on 8/22/14Birchmere - Alexandria

Saw Sturgill Simpson the first time at his debut at the Opry last year. My mouth dropped 15 seconds into his first song. Was totally blown away and wondering where in the world did he come from? Followed his show dates and when I found he was going to be in Alexandria...searched for the tickets then and there! First time to the Birchmere...that was awesome too! Sturgill Simpson and his band put on an amazing show and I am even a bigger fan now! Real, authentic sound and great musicians as well. Cannot wait to see them again. Would buy a ticket again.....right now... to see the exact same show! Bought both his CD's after also buying and downloading his CDs online. With the release of his tour dates just yesterday, I have purchased tickets to the Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion 2014 to see Sturgill Simpson perform there again! But I firmly believe that the Birchmere was by far one of the best venues to witness the talent of Sturgill Simpson. Just perfect all around!!

    Sturgill Simpson is amazing!

    by Sassyfras27 on 8/22/14Birchmere - Alexandria

This show was hands down, the best show I've seen at the Birchmere. The opening act, Cris Jacobs, was rockin' out solo and his voice is beautiful. His songs gave me goosebumps, and man, can he wail on the guitar. Sturgill Simpson came out and not only did he and his band play incredible music, they provided a bit of stand up comedy too. They played non-stop for over an hour and a half and the songs were heartbreaking and foot stompin' and not a single person was just sitting there. The whole audience was into the show and it was great to see so many fans in the DC area. I will see him when he comes back time and again.
