Stray Cats in Concert
That slinky, walking bassline? That snap-snap-snap of fingers, and the soulful, sensual croon? It's the unmistakable sound of "Stray Cat Strut," and it's wafting its way from a dark alley once again as the international kings of the rockabilly revival gear up to hit the road. The summer of 2019 marks the Stray Cats' 40th-anniversary tour through England, Scandinavia, and the U.S., performing hits like "Stray Cat Strut," "(She's) Sexy + 17," and "Rock This Town" — which was named by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as one of the songs that shaped rock ‘n' roll — alongside soon-to-be classics from their upcoming 11th album.
Featuring their first new material as a band in 26 years, ‘40' was announced in early March with the release of lead single "Cat Fight (Over a Dog Like Me)," with trendsetting bandleader Brian Setzer, upright bassist Lee Rocker, and drummer Slim Jim Phantom regaling a typically debauched, degenerate tale. After participating in various high-profile side projects over the years and reuniting in 2018 for concerts in Las Vegas and California, the veteran trio is in classic, cool-cat form and most definitely ready to rock.
Stray Cats Background
In this anything-goes time of musical cross-pollination, it's hard to believe that rockabilly ever needed a revival, but in the late ‘60s through the '70s the sound that gave birth to rock ‘n' roll had fallen into obscurity. Enter three eccentric 20-something musicians from upstate New York. Setzer, Rocker, and Phantom were obsessed with rockabilly originators like Carl Perkins, Gene Vincent, and Eddie Cochran — not just their toe-tapping, swing-dancing sound but their dapper look and lovable tough-guy attitude. They came together in 1979 but found fame after relocating to London and releasing their eponymous debut in 1981. The ‘Stray Cats' album established the band as retro-leaning innovators and put rockabilly back on the musical map, and the band returned to the U.S. to lead a rockabilly revival that has evolved over the decades into an all-around appreciation for vintage Americana rock. The Cats have disbanded and reunited a few times over the years, and separately Setzer, Rocker, and Phantom have played with the likes of George Harrison, Keith Richards, Jerry Lee Lewis, Los Lobos, Mike Ness, and many other icons of rock. But when they come together in their original form their allure is irresistible — and going strong after 40 years.
So much fun. Great performers. Audience drawn in, feels like you are friends with them. Fantastic music.
Solid place to see a show and the band was in top form!
Loved the Stray Cats. The show was high energy from start to finish. Brian Setzer still has it. Lee Rocker was all over his stand up base (literally and figuratively).
Stray Cats put on a great show! First time at Humphrey’s. Good venue. Could use a little elbow room between the seats.
August 19 at Treasure Island in Welch, MN Great opening band. Great show. Seats were very uncomfortable. I thought when I purchased that they were down below. Still a great experience.
Was so happy to finally see this wonderful band live. I didn’t care for the venue. On a summer day it is VERY hot. There’s no cover from the hot sun or rain. Also the bathrooms are one level down. Food is good but pricey.
It was awesome to see my favorite childhood band! The guys sounded very precise but played with a loose, laidback feel. They played songs from several different albums. It was great to hear that play list mix (tracks off of the new album sound great)! Great band, great venue, and just a great time! Thank you from a long time fan!
The Stray Cats put on a very good should. I highly recommend them!
Traveled 4 hours to see The Cats and it was still worth it. So glad they toured for their 40th anniversary and I hope that keep touring. There is a certain magic these 3 have together that I have yet to experience with any other band. They are such s tight band. They always look like they love what they do and are having such a good time. Definitely a bucket list concert!
Awesome show. The Stray Cats were better than ever. Don’t miss them!
Stray cats amazing as always . Good sound too. The venue is not a theatre! It’s a ballroom with chairs . No elevation . We were in the 13th row and it felt like 30 rows back . Unless you’re 6’4 you couldn’t see a thing. Everyone stood the entire time which is fine in an arena or theatre but not in a ballroom . I’d never go see anyone there again unless it was the center first 5 rows.
A great show. A great band. I'll put Brian Setzer in the top three guitarists I've seen, and I've been to many concerts. He's incredible.
They were fabulous. So energetic and entertaining. Did most of the old songs and some new songs. Played for over two hours. Just loved it.
The Stray Cats really brought it when they performed at Treasure Island on Sunday, August 18th. It was my first time seeing them and I was completely blown away with the energy of the show and the set list of tunes that they played. Even the opening act "The James Hunter Duo" was great and everyone enjoyed them as well. Thank You Stray Cats!! It was so good to finally see you after all these years!!!
The Events Center at Treasure Island is a wonderful venue for a concert. Very comfortable and the staff is very friendly. The opening act, the James Hunter Duo, was great. Between the opening act and the Stray Cats our seats got "upgraded" and we ended up Front Row Center! The Stray cats put on a great show. Not only the music, but you could tell how much fun they were having. A great way to celebrate Brittany's birthday!
Fantastic 22-song / 90 minute performance by The Stray Cats in MN at sold-out Treasure Island Casino on their 40th Anniversary tour. Awesome vocals by Brian Setzer. Very cool 8-song opening set by The James Hunter Duo with Myles Weeks on bass tonight in MN at Treasure Island Casino.
The performance was top notch. Sound was good. The venue could be better. The seating of gymnasium type raisers leaves much to be desired. Treasure Island is a multifunctional event center therefore everything is temporary. Ambient noise from others moving about and vibration from the up and down traffic was odd. However, the Stray Cats were solid and extremely talented, showing off their skill and love of music individually as well as together. Music at its finest.
Terrific concert by an iconic trio who have mastered this genre. Interesting audience of many devotees of rockabilly . Once in a lifetime experience and opportunity to catch this act.
Loved the show, the Stray Cats & their opening act were great. Better show than the recent Bad Co. concert. Good sound & lights too - but you need two things: 1) a true theater floor - that flat floor makes it impossible to see the band when people are standing in front of you. 2) A way to get to the event without rebreathing and awful amount of cigarrettte smoke. This is the very worst aspect of seeing shows at Treasure Island. I have passed up many events because they just were not worth breathing the smoke.
The band was on fire and we had great seats. The casino always smells from smoke but luckily the arena does not. Friendly workers and easy in and out.
