After seeing Barenaked Ladies in concert 3 times, I decided it was time to see Steve.
The concert was originally supposed to be outdoors, at Boarding House Park as part of the Lowell Summer Music Series. Due to Hurricane Irene (more like a normal rain shower) it was moved indoors at the Lowell High School.
It was a general admission event, and the doors were to open at 5:30. My parents, my friend Brendan, and myself got to the doors at 5 and waited patiently. Although they opened the doors a few minutes later than 5:30, we were first in line and got front row center seats (my first time ever having front row seats!)
The opener for the show was originally going to be a band called Bronze Radio Return, but a Grateful Dead tribute band, Alligator Wine, played instead (after Bronze Radio Return cancelled). Although I am not very familiar with Grateful Dead's material, these guys seemed very musically skilled and sounded very tight. Better than most opening bands I've seen!
Steve opened up with a great version of "A New Shore", one of my all-time favorites. He played a fantastic setlist, containing 8 songs from "Page One", 8 BNL songs, and even 3 from his 2005 solo album "The Vanity Project".
During the main set, he played two songs from TVP that he doesn't play very often: "These Wasted Words" and "So Young, So Wrong, So Long". These were great treats that were very unexpected.
For the encore, he came out solo (just himself and his guitar) and played another rarity from TVP: "Thank You For Sharing". Though he messed up a few times on guitar (since he doesn't play it much), it was a great rendition. Then, a song I NEVER imagined hearing him play started: "Intermittently" from the BNL album "Maybe You Should Drive". It was a very stripped-down, relaxed, and slow version compared to on the album.
The band came back out, and they finished the show with a great version of "Brian Wilson".
Steve's voice sounded fantastic. A lot of power behind his voice. I did, however, find that on songs with more complicated guitar parts (such as solos), Steve had a tough time playing guitar, and his singing was a bit hard to hear during these parts. Steve is a great guitar player, but he is more of a rhythm guitar player, not so much lead. I think it would greatly benefit Steve to find a lead guitarist, and Steve could play rhythm (like he did in BNL). That way, he could still provide rhythm perfectly, and focus on his voice better. Other than that, no complaints at all.
Steve had a great personality throughout the show, cracking hilarious jokes and interacting with the audience. After the show, he came out to the merch booth to meet the fans and sign their stuff. I went to meet him, shook his hand, and he signed my Vanity Project and Page One CD's. He was very friendly, and seemed really happy.
Overall, if Steve is in your area, definitely go and see him. He will provide an overall entertaining show, playing both his solo stuff and BNL classics.
