About

As one of the most prolific multi-hyphenates in Hollywood, Steve Martin is accomplished in writing, acting, comedy, producing and music. His impressive banjo skills are currently available to ticket holders of his 2013 U.S. tour with the Steep Canyon Rangers and Edie Brickell. Though he is better known as a comedian and actor, especially for parts in "The Jerk," "Planes, Trains, and Automobiles" and "The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour," he began playing banjo at the tender age of 17—having learned the skill by slowing down his bluegrass vinyls to 16bpm. He routinely incorporated it into his stand-up shows and comedy albums, such as the endlessly quotable "A Wild and Crazy Guy," before launching a legitimate music career.

His first major musical success came from his 1978 single, “King Tut,” performed with his band the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. Martin often chooses to duet or collaborate when it comes to performing concerts, playing with some of country’s greatest artists, like Dolly Parton and Earl Scruggs, the latter with whom he most recently collaborated on his rendition of "Foggy Mountain Breakdown," which won Best Country Instrumental Performance. As Martin moves away from comedy and toward serious film roles, writing projects and musical opportunities, he manages to maintain his populist, accessible persona while showcasing his tremendous talent, wit and skill in nearly every arena. His 2013 Love Has Come For You tour with Edie Brickell and the Steep Canyon Rangers is further proof of his unconditional prowess, as is the stage production, “Bright Star,” penned in partnership with Brickell. His comedic chops on film are undeniable, but the longer Steve Martin sticks around, the more fans discover that there’s so much more to him than funny faces.

    Steve Martin is the MAN!

by EclipseDerby on 4/23/10The Midland by AMC - Kansas City

I don't think the evening could have been more fun. The band Steve played with was amazing both on their instruments and when they sang. It just looked so easy for Steve to fit right in and when he played around it was even better. Jokes and Bluegrass seem like a winning combination.

    Banjos?

by mom2eight on 4/23/10The Midland by AMC - Kansas City

Maybe it was written up as a bluegrass event and I missed it, but really come on? Who wants to pay big bucks to hear Steve Martin play the banjo? Give me a break! I see Steve Martin is coming to town, I want to hear a stand up comedian! We left this show after about 45 min. The music was so so and the jokes were lame.

    Stand-up Comedy & Stand-up Music

by DEWalker on 4/23/10The Midland by AMC - Kansas City

A memorable event on so many levels. The music was the showpiece, but Mr. Martin did not disappoint the fans of his comedic art; he delivered an easy, amusing banter between songs. His backup players were incredibly talented young men who helped make the evening one I will treasure for years to come. Blue Grass ROCKS!

    Another side of Steve Martin

by RubyKate on 4/23/10The Midland by AMC - Kansas City

I love everything that Steve Martin does. He has such a wonderful mind that whatever he applies it to turns out truly enjoyable. I have loved his comedy for years. I first saw him 30+ years ago at Hoc Auditorium in Lawrence, KS. We hurt when we left because we had laughed so much. I have enjoyed all his movies...some blatant humor...some subtle...love them all because I enjoy him so much. And now I discover ANOTHER SIDE OF STEVE MARTIN - his banjo playing bluegrass music. It was really, really good. Not only does he play well but he surrounds himself with a band full of great musicians. He and the band played great music all evening while he interjected wonderful moments of humor. I'd go to this concert again and again. Truly an entertaining and fun evening!

Steve Martin and his group were great!

by thongtree1 on 4/23/10The Midland by AMC - Kansas City

This was a very enjoyable evening and well worth the money spent. Steve is awesome on the banjo and his back-up group was very outstanding. For an hour and 45 minutes we were entertained with great bluegrass music with Steve's comedy intertwined between songs. I am 67 and took my 37 year old daughter and she enjoyed it just as much as I did. Guess you might say it was timeless.

    Very fun!!!

by LCDM on 4/23/10The Midland by AMC - Kansas City

We loved it and were thoroughly entertained. We were "l-a-u-g-h-i-n-g o-u-t l-o-u-d" throughout the entire performance. Plus, the music was wonderful and lifted our spirits. The surprise song at the end was a fantastic treat. I would see it again and again. Looking forward to their new CD.

by dapple on 4/23/10The Midland by AMC - Kansas City

The show on Thursday night was incredible. The bluegrass music was outstanding, with bits of comedy perfectly placed between songs, satisfying my hope to have a few laughs. I am definitely glad I went and would go back again if I could.

    What a great night!

by NatalieinKC on 4/23/10The Midland by AMC - Kansas City

What a blast -- my husband and I had such a great time. I am a bluegrass fan from way back., and Steve Martin's banjo talent is still red-hot, and the Canyon band was amazing. I knew I'd hear great music, but I didn't realize how much we would be laughing with Steve Martin's special sense of humor adding to the evening. This was an evening planned by my husband, and he got huge bonus points for planning this night out!

    Steve is the Real Deal

by NICKNAME21 on 4/23/10The Midland by AMC - Kansas City

When I heard Steve won a grammy last year for Bluegrass, I figured that it was given to him based on his star power. Not So... Nothing was given to him, his writing, producing and performing earned him that grammy.

    Steve Martin remains the best!

by GinaB4 on 4/23/10The Midland by AMC - Kansas City

Steve Martin is a talent in nearly all the arts! Writer, comedian, music composer and banjo player! This concert mixed his natural talent of comedy with wonderful, foot-stomping blue-grass. This was a wonderful experience and it was great to see him on stage again! The finale was one of many highlights....King Tut on banjo! Loved it! And adore Steve Martin. Wish the evening could have lasted longer.

    The band was great!

by outonthetownfun on 4/23/10The Midland by AMC - Kansas City

The band has some amazing talent, the best was after they came back on stage at the end to do an encore. Steve Martin seems like he's there mostly for namesake and some comedy, but anyone playing the banjo is impressive in the first place. The evening was a little shorter than we thought. It started a little after 8 and ended before 10, but there was no intermission. It was great music, very entertaining, and lots of fun.

    Steve Martin

by MarkSh on 4/23/10The Midland by AMC - Kansas City

When I bought the tickets I was not expecting a bluegrass concert but I was pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed it. Steve Martin has been my all time favorite comedian since the 70's and he's still as funny as ever. I saw him 30 years ago when he was doing standup and it was awesome to be in the same room with him again. He also is performing with a very talented group of musicians.

    Martin and his banjo

by stevezv on 4/23/10The Midland by AMC - Kansas City

The event was great as expected. The sound could have been better, but wasn't bad, just on the soft side. Venue is outstanding. One of the most ornate venues we've even been in.

    Wonderful music, classic humor

by gardenbug on 4/23/10The Midland by AMC - Kansas City

Steve Martin is amazing on the banjo. His band, the Steep Canyon Ramblers I believe, were an astounding bluegrass band. Most of the music was instrumental, but if you are looking for quality bluegrass interspersed with classic Steve Martin quips, go see this show. My only disappointment was he didn't play "You Belong to Me" off of The Jerk, one of my all time favorites. Great show, worth the ticket price.

by doc4 on 4/23/10The Midland by AMC - Kansas City

Steve Martin and the band are great musicians. It was amazing from one who went to numerous blue grass concerts, just how good he and the band are at picking those strings. Would go again.
