About

As one of the most prolific multi-hyphenates in Hollywood, Steve Martin is accomplished in writing, acting, comedy, producing and music. His impressive banjo skills are currently available to ticket holders of his 2013 U.S. tour with the Steep Canyon Rangers and Edie Brickell. Though he is better known as a comedian and actor, especially for parts in "The Jerk," "Planes, Trains, and Automobiles" and "The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour," he began playing banjo at the tender age of 17—having learned the skill by slowing down his bluegrass vinyls to 16bpm. He routinely incorporated it into his stand-up shows and comedy albums, such as the endlessly quotable "A Wild and Crazy Guy," before launching a legitimate music career.

His first major musical success came from his 1978 single, “King Tut,” performed with his band the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. Martin often chooses to duet or collaborate when it comes to performing concerts, playing with some of country’s greatest artists, like Dolly Parton and Earl Scruggs, the latter with whom he most recently collaborated on his rendition of "Foggy Mountain Breakdown," which won Best Country Instrumental Performance. As Martin moves away from comedy and toward serious film roles, writing projects and musical opportunities, he manages to maintain his populist, accessible persona while showcasing his tremendous talent, wit and skill in nearly every arena. His 2013 Love Has Come For You tour with Edie Brickell and the Steep Canyon Rangers is further proof of his unconditional prowess, as is the stage production, “Bright Star,” penned in partnership with Brickell. His comedic chops on film are undeniable, but the longer Steve Martin sticks around, the more fans discover that there’s so much more to him than funny faces.

by BethyBroadway24 on 12/24/16Town Hall - New York

What a complete joy it was to see the entire cast of Bright Star back together again for this concert. I saw the show 3 times on Broadway and fell in love with the music and the fabulous cast. What a talented bunch of individuals!!! I look forward to following all of their successful careers.

The four of us loved every second of this show. From Carmen, to Steve, to Edie and the rest of the cast. The songs were utter perfection. I would pay to see it again!

by Hollywood1216 on 12/15/16Town Hall - New York

This was an incredible night! Of course it was lovely to see Steve and Edie, and I was pleasantly surprised that they were able to get the whole cast and band to perform at this show. It was truly magical.

    Surprisingly very good!

by SteadyJoy on 12/15/16Town Hall - New York

Though show didn't do so well on Broadway, this in-concert, intermission-less production was tremendous, amazing, glorious and, as Steve admitted, the way to stage it. He and Edie kicked off show live on stage and ended it on stage as well, standing, I noted, in back of theatre the rest of time. In-concert, with all the Broadway cast, the story was much clearer, the singing (and minimal acting, of course) was superb. Grammy-nominated music and songs. You must hear Carmen Cusack! Show-stopper numbers! Can't wait to see it again.

by vegasreba on 12/15/16Town Hall - New York

I am so in love with this show and the music. The concert was amazing, and I hope that the story will be turned into a movie and a touring show at some point. I cannot say enough wonderful things about this show and the actors/actresses.

    Bright Star is a gem!

by Morrgan on 12/15/16Town Hall - New York

This concert was a highlight of my Christmas season. Bright Star is soul-enriching, emotionally intelligent, classically witty, and joyously fun! Steve Martin and Edie Brickell have written a compelling story about the truth of the human condition and the complexity of relationships. I hope this concert is an annual tradition!

    Incredible evening!

by CRayH on 12/15/16Town Hall - New York

Bright Star in concert was truly unforgettable! So special to be there for this one-time event that reunited the cast, writers, band, and crew of the original Bright Star musical. Perfect venue for it - big enough to have a good crowd but intimate enough to really feel like you were getting to hang out with the amazing cast (plus Steve and Edie) for a couple hours.

    "Bright Star" in concert

by Vetzky on 12/15/16Town Hall - New York

Having seen the show and loved the music, this concert version was a delight. Having the original cast made the presentation even better. The introduction by Steve Martin and Edie Brickell added to the enjoyment; his banjo playing and her rendition of a song that did not make the show, prior to the actual presentation, enhanced the evening. Carmen Cusack is a gem; her voice with the bluegrass music and haunting words hit home . Rob Berman on the piano and conducting made the music come alive! The Q and A after the show was well done; Steve Martin cannot sit long without his humor coming out. Thank you for a delightful evening!

STEVE MARTIN & THE STEEP CANYON RANGERS FEATURING

by Kasindy on 7/7/14Humphreys Concerts By the Bay - San Diego

First off, Humphreys is a great venue for summer concerts - this was our first concert this summer and it did not disappoint! I have always admired Steve Martin as an actor and now I can add musician to that as well. The music was amazing and the commentary from Steve & his band mates was awesome. Edie Brickell joined the group for several songs and added a nice twist to the music and lyrics. I definitely recommend Steve Martin to anyone and I hope to see them again next year at Humphreys.
