About

Stereophonic mines the agony and the ecstasy of creation as it zooms in on a music studio in 1976. Written by David Adjmi, directed by Daniel Aukin, and featuring original music by Arcade Fire's Will Butler, Stereophonic invites the audience to immerse themselves -- with fly-on-the-wall intimacy -- in the powder keg process of a band on the brink of blowing up. The most Tony Award-winning Show of 2024. The most Tony Award-nominated Play of all time. Stereophonic.

  • Boring

I've attended 4-6 Broadway shows a year for over 40 years, and this was only the 3rd time I've left at intermission. Even with all of the dialogue, you can't get attached to any of the characters, and quite simply didn't care what happened to them. There is no character development, and no real connection between any of them. The only redeeming value is that they did do a couple of good songs in between the painful chatter.

  • Underwhelming

While the basis of the storyline was interesting the execution lost it's way. Having the Producer and Engineer in the story was a unique twist but the character development of the musicians never seemed to "get there"for me and it made for a long evening.

  • I Was Fascinated. And Frustrated.

I think I looked forward to seeing "Stereophonic"in Seattle as much as I looked forward to seeing "Hamilton"on Broadway in 2016. Everything about it looked fresh and different and wondrous. And it was. Except that I probably missed 20% of the dialog, because The Paramount was too big a house for this show. How I wish it had been at The Moore! It cries out for greater intimacy. That being said - the 80% I heard and the 100% I saw was AMAZING. And I totally agree with Seattle Times reviewer Gemma Wilson who wrote "Every element of “Stereophonic” was crafted with love and respect for — and frustration with and resentment of — the mud-caked slog that is the creative process." In a smaller house, no doubt 5 Stars.

Not my cup of tea as far as script and acting and length.

  • Rock and roll drama circus.

Well done. Great music, only not enough. Insight into the creative process and the relationship drama that can happen. Great singers. Great sound. Only drawback, no big surprise or learning experience. Captured being young.
