Over three decades and numerous albums, industrial metal scene leaders Static-X are consummate survivors. Even after the untimely death of lead singer Wayne Static in 2014, the group has regenerated and continued to record new music while honoring the late frontman's legacy. Unlike their more straightforward '90s nu-metal counterparts, Static-X were heavily influenced by house music, blending influences like Pantera with the electronic stylings of Prodigy and the Crystal Method to define their sound.
Static-X were originally formed in 1994 after Wayne Static's former band, Deep Blue Dream (featuring a pre-Smashing Pumpkins Billy Corgan), broke up. Along with drummer Ken Jay and guitarist Emerson Swinford, Static relocated from Chicago to Los Angeles and the trio formed a band called DRILL. Swinford left the band and was replaced by Koichi Fukuda, and Static-X was born.
The band's first album came out in 1999 at the height of the nu-metal era. Wisconsin Death Trip contained the singles "Push It," "I'm With Stupid" and "Bled For Days." They played Ozzfest to support the album and released an EP, The Death Trip Continues, the following year.
Fukuda departed Static-X soon after, and in 2001 the band released their sophomore effort: Machine. The following year, Wayne Static's vocals were featured on the Queen Of The Damned: Music From the Motion Picture soundtrack ("Not Meant For Me," written by Korn's Jonathan Davis). Jay left the band shortly after, and in 2003 Static-X's third album, Shadow Zone, was released, featuring "The Only" and "So" as singles. Replacing Jay was former Seether drummer Nick Oshiro.
In 2004, Static-X released Beneath... Between... Beyond..., a collection of rarities and demos. The band released their fourth album, Start A War, in 2005 with "I'm the One" and "Dirthouse" released as singles. In 2007, Static-X shared a fifth album, Cannibal, which had music ("No Submission") featured on the Saw III soundtrack. Also in 2007, the band shared their exclusive Destroyer EP and toured on Ozzfest once more.
In 2009, the band released their fifth album, Cult Of Static. The album single "Lunatic" appeared on the soundtrack to Marvel's Punisher: War Zone. Oshiro left Static-X around this time and was replaced by touring drummer Will Hunt.
By the 2010s, the members of Static-X had split off to concentrate on separate projects, and Static toured with a solo band under the Static-X name. In 2013, the band announced that they were officially breaking up, though Static continued to play the band's material on tour as a solo act. In 2014, Static died at 48 ostensibly due to a long history of substance abuse, though officially his death was termed a natural one.
A few years after Static's death, the former band members reunited and began to parse through old unreleased demos. Composing new songs from that material resulted in Project Regeneration, which came out in two volumes, the first of which dropped in summer 2020. To support the album, the newly reformed Static-X toured with a new, masked frontman named "Xer0," who was rumored to be Edsel Dope of Dope. The band also released a single, "Hollow," which peaked in the Top 15 in the U.S. Dance/Electronic chart.
Catch Static-X on tour in a city near you.
Static X rocked the show, they played a very long set, and played almost every song i wanted to here, Also bury your dead was very good.
This was my first time at this venue and I can tell you that I was really impressed. Other than the overpriced drinks and the full pat down I received upon entering the venue there wasn't much more to complain about. Getting to be so close and intimate with the band is the best part of this place. Distant put on a good opening act gearing the crowd up for what was to follow. George has an amazing set of pipes! Bury Your Dead showed the crowd how really good of a band they are... and certainly a force to be reckoned with. It wouldn't surprise me in the least to see them headlining their own tour very soon. Static-X rocked the joint with a collection of new and old tracks that kept the audience moving the entire time. They played all their favorites and then some. Who said Nu Metal is dead? Just don't tell these guys that as they are liable to make drink a few shots of Tequila with them and send you out into the circle pit alone...
Static-x was awesome. Played some old goodies and their best new songs from their new album. The only thing that bothered me was that the original drummer Nick Oshiro was not playing that night. It was someone else. When they started playing I was like what, where's NIck? It sounded almost the same but you can hear the difference. Nick has his signature sound and that crazy rock smile of his with his awesome dreads. I also enjoyed the female dancer they had up on stage. She didn't do anything big/theatrical dancing which was the perfect touch. She had cute moves. Loved her blue dyed bangs.
the show was mind blowing from the start when Bury Your Dead came out and started a wall of death!!! then when Static-X took the stage everyone went crazy. i sang to every song!
AMAZING!! Especially since they just happened to play on my b-day. I had such a blast and once again they played my favorite song LOVE DUMP! We were up on the balcony and could see everything which was a pretty sweet experience. It was my second time seeing them and i cant wait to see them a third time!!!!
The boys in Static never let me down. I've been watching them live since '98 and their show still has the high energy and great sound that I've come to know and depend on. They played a good mix of old and new songs. It was disappointing to see the girl dancing(?) on stage because, after so many years, the band doesn't need it but whatever turns Wayne on, I guess. Can't wait to see them play again.
The sound was great for a very small venue. Mrs. Static kept everyone entertained to say the least. The band was energetic and played plenty of the older stuff that I fell in love with them for. Took an attorney and he had an excellent time too. Went to the balcony for more room and just went crazy dancing.
The Show was amazing! Static-X toured with an awesome lineup. Dirge Within was really cool and has serious potential. The bands were very Fan oriented and the music was awesome. I was really amazed with Bury Your Dead's performance. I didn't really know much about the band before the show, but they seriously amazed me. Myke Terry the new lead singer really new how to get the crowd involved he even decided at one point to go into the crowd. The overall performance surprised me b/c I thought shows like this went extict in the 90s. But this line up showed me some artist haven't let mainstream go to their head. Static-X surprised me b/c their music was just as good as I remembered it 10 years ago when I first saw them at Ozzfest 99. Overall *****!
Prior to this show I had only heard of Bury Your Dead, which I had seen before as a warmup for Five Finger Death Punch. Dirge Within started off the evening with a brutal set of their music for which they have yet to release a CD which I hope is coming. Seventh Void followed with a set of Doom Metal, a nice and unexpected change from Dirge Within. Playing selected songs from their first CD "Heaven is Gone" Kenny Hickey says to the crowd "This is so heavy it will feel like an elephant sat on your chest!" Good stuff! When Bury Your Dead came out, I noticed that the band was wearing a lot of white and that their speaker cabinets were painted white. They had also changed their guitars from ESP LTD's to Xtones modified with EMG pickups. Their sound was harder than the last time I saw them, and I attributed this to the guitar change. Myke and the crew played a couple of songs off their recently released CD "It's Nothing Personal" and a lot of older material. And Myke settles for nothing less than total mayhem from the crowd, and he got it! Static-X brought the crowd to fever pitch with "evil disco" as they delivered a blistering set of material from "Cult of Static" to "Wisconsin Death Trip". Much of the audience was very familiar with the songs and were singing along with many of them. Wayne would call "time for shots" and Tera Wray Static would deliver them to the band and show off a little skin which got the male members of the audience going. Can't wait to see them again!
I took my niece to this concert and it was my first "headbanging" concert, and it rocked! We were in the front row and got a clear view of the band. The sound was amazing and they sounded just like they do on record. There was a mosh pit going on and lots of head banging. It was a lot of fun and I would definitley go to another concert of theirs.
Static X put on one hell of a show,Wayne really knows how to get the crowd into it ,and he seemed to have a lot of fun.......Lets do shots............We hope they make it to the Orbit Room again.
Static-x put on the best show i have ever seen. they sounded amazing very high energy.
every song i wanted to hear. sounded great. best venue around
This was by far the best concert I have seen this year and I have seen quite a few. From Shinedown to Nine Inch Nails. Wayne is a great entertainer. I would love to see Static-X again at an outdoor venue.
The show was awesome I convinced many people to come see them live and now they are fans for life. I came to the conclusion that listening to them on CD's does not do them justice you have to witness the greatness in person. The venue in which it was held was a cool place, coming from Orlando, Fl into Atlanta, Ga I almost felt at home. I would definitely recommend seeing them live.
It was my first time getting to see Static-X live in the 9 years I've been listening to them and they most certainly did not disappoint. The entire show was very energy packed, great lighting changes from song to song, new songs as well as old favorites, plus Wayne's hotter than hell wife coming out to give the band members shots while wearing close to nothing. Just can't beat it.
The show was amazing. The venue really helped as well. Static-X put on a great show, but the Masquerade deserves cudos too. There is nothing better than being able to get close to your favorite bands and the audio isn't overwhelming. It is Very Loud, but you can understand it. Great show.
I was able to make it to see Static-X along with their opening acts. It was quite an amazing show. I think the bands sounded great and it is definately worth checking out. Static-X is amazing. They have a great stage presence!! Thanks
The best way to see any band is in a small venue like the Rex - but seeing a band that kicks out this much energy, and being inches from the stage was incredible.
They put on such a great show, and the Rave was the perfect place for it!! You could seriously almost reach out and touch the band, probably the best concert I've ever been to.
