About

Over three decades and numerous albums, industrial metal scene leaders Static-X are consummate survivors. Even after the untimely death of lead singer Wayne Static in 2014, the group has regenerated and continued to record new music while honoring the late frontman's legacy. Unlike their more straightforward '90s nu-metal counterparts, Static-X were heavily influenced by house music, blending influences like Pantera with the electronic stylings of Prodigy and the Crystal Method to define their sound.

Static-X were originally formed in 1994 after Wayne Static's former band, Deep Blue Dream (featuring a pre-Smashing Pumpkins Billy Corgan), broke up. Along with drummer Ken Jay and guitarist Emerson Swinford, Static relocated from Chicago to Los Angeles and the trio formed a band called DRILL. Swinford left the band and was replaced by Koichi Fukuda, and Static-X was born.

The band's first album came out in 1999 at the height of the nu-metal era. Wisconsin Death Trip contained the singles "Push It," "I'm With Stupid" and "Bled For Days." They played Ozzfest to support the album and released an EP, The Death Trip Continues, the following year.

Fukuda departed Static-X soon after, and in 2001 the band released their sophomore effort: Machine. The following year, Wayne Static's vocals were featured on the Queen Of The Damned: Music From the Motion Picture soundtrack ("Not Meant For Me," written by Korn's Jonathan Davis). Jay left the band shortly after, and in 2003 Static-X's third album, Shadow Zone, was released, featuring "The Only" and "So" as singles. Replacing Jay was former Seether drummer Nick Oshiro.

In 2004, Static-X released Beneath... Between... Beyond..., a collection of rarities and demos. The band released their fourth album, Start A War, in 2005 with "I'm the One" and "Dirthouse" released as singles. In 2007, Static-X shared a fifth album, Cannibal, which had music ("No Submission") featured on the Saw III soundtrack. Also in 2007, the band shared their exclusive Destroyer EP and toured on Ozzfest once more.

In 2009, the band released their fifth album, Cult Of Static. The album single "Lunatic" appeared on the soundtrack to Marvel's Punisher: War Zone. Oshiro left Static-X around this time and was replaced by touring drummer Will Hunt.

By the 2010s, the members of Static-X had split off to concentrate on separate projects, and Static toured with a solo band under the Static-X name. In 2013, the band announced that they were officially breaking up, though Static continued to play the band's material on tour as a solo act. In 2014, Static died at 48 ostensibly due to a long history of substance abuse, though officially his death was termed a natural one.

A few years after Static's death, the former band members reunited and began to parse through old unreleased demos. Composing new songs from that material resulted in Project Regeneration, which came out in two volumes, the first of which dropped in summer 2020. To support the album, the newly reformed Static-X toured with a new, masked frontman named "Xer0," who was rumored to be Edsel Dope of Dope. The band also released a single, "Hollow," which peaked in the Top 15 in the U.S. Dance/Electronic chart.

I have never missed a Static-X show. No matter what state I live in or even just happen to be visiting at the time. This was the best show that they have put on, and I should know...

I heard they were coming, and I was showing up, no matter what! And let me tell you it was totally worth it! Every time they come my way I will be there, because they put on a great show and never disappoint.

I had a great time, they always seem to be enjoying what they are doing. I really like small venues when you can see the that the band is not just going through the moves, but is having a good time.

awesome show, one of the best i've been to. i've seen metallica, areosmith, kiss....the best shows are still the small venues. got a bass pick after the show and picture and autograph with Tony Campos the bass player(was trying to talk to the guy with camera and smile at the same time)!! I'd been wanting to see them live for quite awhile and missed them in Wichita. Mudvayne and Korn and Black Label was cool, but i really wanted to see Static X!! :D

  • Evil disco live in Toledo

by Voldaer on 9/15/09Headliners - ToledoRating: 4 out of 5

This was my first Static X show. Drove out to Toledo from metro Detroit to check it out and was very pleased with what I received. Headlines seems like a cool club, similar to Harpos in Detroit but not as run down. The opening bands were mediocre but Static blew the place out of the water and they were the reason that I was there. Only complaint I have is that they only played a little over an hour but they cranked out one song after another with little break in between.

  • STATIC X ROCKS ONCE AGAIN!

by schmoolie on 9/15/09The Blue Note - ColumbiaRating: 5 out of 5

Incredible, incredible, incredible!!! That pretty much sums it up!!! I have seen Static X five time and they never disappoint me. They rocked the entire time, playing all my favorites. The opening bands rocked hard as well. I can't think of any two bands that could have been better to open for Static X then "Light The Shadows" and "Ghost In The Machine".

  • Static-X kicks ass

    by Casey42 on 9/14/09Headliners - ToledoRating: 5 out of 5

Static-X is by far the best I've seen. The vocals were spot on and the music was unbelievable. I feel so lucky to have been able to see them in such a small setting. I've seen them in an outdoor arena but this was so much better. Rock on!

This was our 4th time seeing them this year. Amazing as always, awesome show, wish they could have played all night. One hour is just the tip of the scales....Love the smaller venues, get to be up front and close and really feel the experience Static-X always gives. Thanks for another great night!!!!

  • Static x Roxxx

    by Scott810 on 9/13/09Headliners - ToledoRating: 5 out of 5

Excellent performance as always...sound was not crazy loud which is good but slightly louder would have been easier to hear all the mix. Tony and Koichi were cool as he11 and came out and mingled with myself & my friend as well as other fans after the show...Extremely gracious and humble guys. Very down to earth. We really wanted to meet Wayne but apparently he was tired out after the wicked performance. Many don't appreciate this band because the music is not super elaborate. all I can say izz that their music May not be overly complex but it sure does pump you up!

  • Static-x was amazing!!!

  • Static-X ALWAYS GREAT!!

by kwils58 on 9/5/09House of Blues Anaheim - AnaheimRating: 5 out of 5

Static-X is our absolutely favorite band, period. We go to see them every time they are anywhere within 100 miles of us. Absolutely fantastic stage presence, energy, and they played all our favorites this time! Great venue to see them at--I think we've seen them twice or three times here. Only downside, Wayne has his wife dancing onstage in some kind of choreographed thing......you don't need her guys, you are so awesome without the window dressing!! Definitely waiting for them to come into town again--I will be first in line for tickets. Hadn't seen Bury Your Dead live before, but we are fans of theirs. Great energy, guitarists were great and drummer was also. This singer is not as good as the old one, but he has great rapport with the audience.

  • Static-X... truly shocking.

by EimHarrower on 9/4/09House of Blues Anaheim - AnaheimRating: 5 out of 5

There has not been a time in my life when I have enjoyed a concert as much as I have enjoyed the one held by Static-X on Monday, August 31. It left me wanting more, even though they came out for a quick encore after originially leaving the stage. I will definitely make it a personal goal to follow them around on their tours through California.

I have been a Static-X fan since my dad got me into them in 1999 when Wisconsin Death Trip came out. I have been wanting to see them for years and was very excited to see them and had a great time, they were everything I expected!
