About

Over three decades and numerous albums, industrial metal scene leaders Static-X are consummate survivors. Even after the untimely death of lead singer Wayne Static in 2014, the group has regenerated and continued to record new music while honoring the late frontman's legacy. Unlike their more straightforward '90s nu-metal counterparts, Static-X were heavily influenced by house music, blending influences like Pantera with the electronic stylings of Prodigy and the Crystal Method to define their sound.

Static-X were originally formed in 1994 after Wayne Static's former band, Deep Blue Dream (featuring a pre-Smashing Pumpkins Billy Corgan), broke up. Along with drummer Ken Jay and guitarist Emerson Swinford, Static relocated from Chicago to Los Angeles and the trio formed a band called DRILL. Swinford left the band and was replaced by Koichi Fukuda, and Static-X was born.

The band's first album came out in 1999 at the height of the nu-metal era. Wisconsin Death Trip contained the singles "Push It," "I'm With Stupid" and "Bled For Days." They played Ozzfest to support the album and released an EP, The Death Trip Continues, the following year.

Fukuda departed Static-X soon after, and in 2001 the band released their sophomore effort: Machine. The following year, Wayne Static's vocals were featured on the Queen Of The Damned: Music From the Motion Picture soundtrack ("Not Meant For Me," written by Korn's Jonathan Davis). Jay left the band shortly after, and in 2003 Static-X's third album, Shadow Zone, was released, featuring "The Only" and "So" as singles. Replacing Jay was former Seether drummer Nick Oshiro.

In 2004, Static-X released Beneath... Between... Beyond..., a collection of rarities and demos. The band released their fourth album, Start A War, in 2005 with "I'm the One" and "Dirthouse" released as singles. In 2007, Static-X shared a fifth album, Cannibal, which had music ("No Submission") featured on the Saw III soundtrack. Also in 2007, the band shared their exclusive Destroyer EP and toured on Ozzfest once more.

In 2009, the band released their fifth album, Cult Of Static. The album single "Lunatic" appeared on the soundtrack to Marvel's Punisher: War Zone. Oshiro left Static-X around this time and was replaced by touring drummer Will Hunt.

By the 2010s, the members of Static-X had split off to concentrate on separate projects, and Static toured with a solo band under the Static-X name. In 2013, the band announced that they were officially breaking up, though Static continued to play the band's material on tour as a solo act. In 2014, Static died at 48 ostensibly due to a long history of substance abuse, though officially his death was termed a natural one.

A few years after Static's death, the former band members reunited and began to parse through old unreleased demos. Composing new songs from that material resulted in Project Regeneration, which came out in two volumes, the first of which dropped in summer 2020. To support the album, the newly reformed Static-X toured with a new, masked frontman named "Xer0," who was rumored to be Edsel Dope of Dope. The band also released a single, "Hollow," which peaked in the Top 15 in the U.S. Dance/Electronic chart.

  • 20 Years of Evil Disco

by Molly on 11/16/19House of Blues New Orleans presented by Cricket Wireless - New OrleansRating: 5 out of 5

The tour celebrates the 20th anniversary of Static-X's Wisconsin Death Trip and the memory of Wayne Static. It does justice to both. Every band at this show had great stage presence, energy, and true enthusiasm. Raven Black started the night full tilt and drop kicked the crowd into the first round of face melting sonic fun. Wednesday 13 (on Wed the 13th!) continued the "decaydent" trajectory to decibel delirium. Dope (with their own 20th anniversary as well for Felons and Revolutionaries) blasted the audience like an afterburner. The crowd gets an enthralling moment of oddly cathartic calm opening Static-X's set and then evil discoed into oblivion until the last note. Absolutely worth it!

  • Awesome tribute to Wayne

I have to say Xero does a great job channeling Wayne. The rest of the band is energetic and puts on an amazing show. Just go and you will be impressed. One of the best concerts I have seen all year and I go to a lot of shows

  • honoring Static X

by G. S. on 7/31/19House of Blues Las Vegas presented by Cricket Wireless - Las VegasRating: 5 out of 5

I saw Wayne either one or two shows before he passed. I had seen them previously of course, and love their style of what I call industrial punk. I had read where they had asked for permission to take on this endeavor and honor, respect and give the fans a chance to enjoy this music, maybe one or more times. sort of like Hellyeah in a sense. I had also heard about masks and mystery singers and to be honest I was almost more intrigued to witness than excited to see and hear these high energy anthems. the house of blues in Vegas is a great venue and it was sold out to the gills, so clearly I was surrounded by the same large crowd in anticipation. all of that said it was a night to remember! the musician portion of course, on point, and still able to whip up and match the frenzy and fun in each song. but the "mystery" man behind the mike, not a mystery to me, was just awesome in not trying to exceed the almighty Wayne, nor mimic, but honor and recreate. so for me this was top notch, and near the top of the shows I have attended this year. and most of all it was "static" as hell! then you add the shear veracity of the support (mostly bands in that inner circle for 20 some years) and you had a show that was as big as any festival: iconic Devildriver; the marvelous anger of Dope; the very underrated over-achieving and wonderful Wednesday 13, the male equal to the fun of an "in this moment", and last newbie and fun as hell goth/metal/glam Raven black. all in all Static, static as it can get.

  • Amazing

by Generalthao on 7/30/19House of Blues Las Vegas presented by Cricket Wireless - Las VegasRating: 5 out of 5

Side stage was super worth every penny. The show was amazing, the sound was a little quiet but probably because I was behind the speakers. Could still hear though. Second best show I've been to, but it isn't a fair comparison. Definitely would see them any chance you get.

  • 🤘🏼 AMAZING show 🤘🏼

by GT on 7/30/19House of Blues Las Vegas presented by Cricket Wireless - Las VegasRating: 5 out of 5

This show was absolutely amazing All the the bands that played came out hard and fast The audio was on point The only thing that wasn't so great was how packed it was. We were literally pressed against other people. Didn't like that part at all. Plus the AC should have been taken down a couple notches cause it was a bit warm. Other than that, it was a super awesome show.

Static X! Enough said! Really good at the timing of each set list. Vip half table areas are a bit cramped but other than that great show

  • Great show, not-so-great venue

    by materx2 on 7/13/19Reverb - ReadingRating: 4 out of 5

We were at Reverb to see Static-X. We saw 5 bands total, three of whom we'd been listening to since the 90s (Dope, DevilDriver and Static-X) and one of whom merits a closer look (Wednesday 13). The music was amazing! The venue was hot, and not in the good way. The show was sold-out, and it was a very hot July night, yet Reverb had only a few ceiling fans going (maybe 3 out of 9 total) and it really felt like the air conditioning wasn't on. The heat in the venue did detract from our enjoyment of the show.

So glad I got to experience this tour. So much love and hard work put in by all. I never got to see Wayne perform but id imagine it was a lot like Xero was on this night. Xero did a great job in my book. Keep it up and RIP WAYNE STATIC.

  • The bands were awesome

    by KB19 on 7/10/19Reverb - ReadingRating: 4 out of 5

Wed 13, Dope, Devildriver and Static X were phenomenal! Unfortunately, The Reverb only had 5 fans going without any A/C on a 90° day and a sold out show! The hottest show ive ever been attended!! I felt bad for then bands!

  • Band: good, Venue: Meh

    by M. V. on 7/10/19LONDON MUSIC HALL - LondonRating: 3 out of 5

Static X was energetic and devildriver was exciting. The guest singing ttrying to talk like Wayne was a bit creepy tho. My issue was that it wasnt clear that the venue did not accept credit cards. I forgot my ear plugs in the car, they wouldn't let me go get get them. Then, i tried to buy some but they only took cash. I triednto buy beer, but only took cash. I was pointed at an ATM, but i only had a credit card which wouldnt work. So i was beer and earplug-less the whole evening.

  • Too hot

The bands sounded great. I couldn’t actually see the bands due to many people and reverb was to hot

  • Static-x

    by R. B. on 7/10/19Reverb - ReadingRating: 5 out of 5

Awesome bands Raven Black, Wednesday 13, Devil Driver and Static-x were are perfect. The Building needs some help hotter then hell in there no ac or fans running. Overpriced drinks one guy bartender didn't like to bring back change. I would go back again just because of the bands!!

  • Incredible

by Johnnyb on 7/10/19Reverb - ReadingRating: 5 out of 5

Great show overall, Xero did an incredible job. Tony, Kiochi, and Ken have not lost even the smallest step. Just hammered song after song after song. Also it was a sincere and heartfelt tribute to Wayne. You can feel how much these guys, from all the bands, and the fans truly miss their friend and hero. I would have easily paid double, probably triple for the show. Venue is just ok, really needs some updating, hot can lights, no air movement, and parking was a pain. But the show made up for it.

  • great show hated the venue

by METALloverLISA on 7/10/19Reverb - ReadingRating: 3 out of 5

GREAT SHOW! Static X killed it. But I have to say the venue was not great. It was a sweat box, and extremely uncomfortable. Felt like no air on at all. With body heat it was at least 100 degrees in there, and I felt sick. I drove 4 hours to that even and could barley enjoy myself. It was humid and gross. A venue should keep it cool so people do not have to feel like they have heat exhaustion. Even the band was like how are you all still standing after this heat in here? The sound didn't carry well in there either. Was not loud enough. Didn't pack that punch it should.

  • A must see event

by James on 7/2/19Baltimore Soundstage - BaltimoreRating: 4 out of 5

Frontman to Static X nailed it perfectly, cleverly done with the mask, keep the tours going.... I would give it a five star, if Dope and Wednesday 13 sets were longer....

  • Place needs seats

by Baron on 7/1/19Baltimore Soundstage - BaltimoreRating: 5 out of 5

Besides the band's being awesome the place could use chairs here and there

  • Awesome!

by Trish on 7/1/19Baltimore Soundstage - BaltimoreRating: 5 out of 5

It was awesome, however, the bathrooms were nasty. It was really hot and needed to go out for air a few times.
