STARS IN CONCERT:
Concertgoers are in for an emotional tour de force the minute indie pop collective Stars steps on stage. For more than two decades the he said-she-said dynamic of singers Torquill Campbell and Aimee Millan has been making fans swoon with sentimental bliss. Ticket buyers will be treated to highlights from the band's rich and diverse catalog of emotive tunes, from the heart-wrenching "Your Ex-Lover Is Dead" to the tender "Do You Want To Die Together?". The vulnerability behind Campbell and Milan's soft voices pairs seamlessly with the band's flourishing instrumentation, resulting in a strikingly raw live experience fans won't want to miss.
BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:
Singer Torquill Campbell and keyboardist Christopher Seligman formed Stars in Toronto in 1998. The duo released their debut album Nightsongs in 2001 before rounding out their sound with bassist Evan Cranley, singer/guitarist Aimee Millan, and drummer Patrick McGee. Their sophomore effort, 2003's Heart, was a delicately crafted collection of chamber pop tunes that earned them a Juno nomination for Alternative Album of the Year and a co-headlining North American tour with Broken Social Scene. Their standout third album, 2004's Set Yourself On Fire, was recorded while the band lived under one roof during a harsh Canadian winter. The resulting set of melancholy tunes was critically praised and spawned some of the band's biggest hits to date including "Ageless Beauty" and "Your Ex-Lover Is Dead". Since then Stars has released six studio albums including 2012's electro pop-driven The North and 2014's surprisingly dance-heavy No One Is Lost.
Good band, been a fan for awhile. Seen them twice, but they never play my favorite songs. "Night starts here" & "Wasted Daylight"
I've seen Stars 9 times now and Monday night's show was the most fun I've ever had. I was right in the front and center and I really felt like the band interacted with the audience more than usual. It was awesome!
We went to see Stars. I had heard Hey Rosetta and liked them but would not pay to see them - until I saw them live. Wow. They were tight, fun and made me dance. They should have been the headliner. Stars was weak. The sound was off and the lighting missed the mark. The lead singer was weak and I was disappointed with the band. We left when the stupid wedding stuff started - that was a stupid idea. Apparently we were not alone. I was waiting for my wife to go to the washroom and there was an exodus during the wedding shenanigans.
Torq, Amy, and the whole Stars band were tight and energized. They played a great show as always! Their new release, No One is Lost, is perfect for a live show. These guys never disappoint...
I went to the show for Hey Rosetta! and had heard good things about Stars - but was terribly disappointed. They were too loud and just not my cup of tea. Hey Rosetta's set was great and their new songs were just as good as old favorites! They did not play "Bandages" my all time favorite song, but had a solid & balanced set list. I hope they return to Boston for a solo show soon!
It was just the best night. Stars are awesome - energy, music, just a great show.
This is the third time I've seen Stars in almost fifteen years of loving them and they, of course, did not disappoint. Stars, though you may not think it from listening to their albums is a band that you must see live and while you're seeing them, let them become a part of you. They will do the same.
We specifically went to see Hey Rosetta which put on a great opening act. They crank out some high energy, powerful music that swims around the alt rock genre with added horns and strings. There seemed to be a lot of HR fans around us but we failed to generate enough noise for an encore. Not being familiar with Stars, we planned to hang out… at least for a few songs. Unfortunately the club (or Stars) played opera between sets. It was so annoying we had to leave. Who's idea was that for an audience that came to hear alt rock?
Stars was incredible and their opener, the High Highs were awesome
It was a wonderful experience, I would do it again anytime soon! I was so close to the stage I could touch them!
This was such a great show featuring a lot of songs from The North and a nice mix of classic hits. My boyfriend and I had a great time and can't wait until Stars return to LA to promote their next album!!
Such an awesome show. Love the El Rey, and Stars was great, as always. Venue was clean, bartenders were friendly -- no complaints. Great show.
Stars and Yukon Blonde were both amazing! We wish we could have been on the floor!
It got a little crazy in there, what with everyone dancing along, but that's also what made it great.
The venue is terrific as you rarely get this close to a terrific band like Stars for this price range! The acoustics were great and the show is a rush from start to finish! Awesome crowd, very exciting night!
Played tons of new and old favorites! Beautiful harmonies and vocal interplay. Torq and Amy just keep getting better and better!
This was a trans-formative show in the greatest sense. These guys not only know how to put on a show, they are having the time of their lives while doing it and sharing the joy with each and every one of you. Generous of spirit and truly talented. This is what a rock show should be.
The opening act, Milo Greene, was nothing special--to be honest, they bored me, despite the frankly disconcerting volume--but then Stars came on, and wow. Definitely a different sound from the album recordings, but all the more reason to hear them live! Everyone played great, and Torq and Amy were on fire (no pun intended), dancing and jumping around on stage, telling stories and spurring on the crowd, and the energy was infectious. I found myself dancing and jumping and singing along, right there with them every step of the way--my number one favorite memory of the night is of hanging halfway over the balcony railing screaming "Take me, take me to the riot," my words swallowed up by the roar of the crowd, submerged in the vibrating thrum of excitement running through every single one of us and feeling so damn on.
Better than I could have even anticipated! Just amazing.
An incredible night was had! Milo Greene was an amazing opening act and STARS performed every song from their long discography that I could have hoped for! Both acts exceeded my expectations!
