ST. VINCENT IN CONCERT:

Possessing a rare combination of art-school appeal and mainstream accessibility, St. Vincent's Annie Clark is well on her way to full blown pop stardom. From her collaborations with David Byrne and Sufjan Stevens to her acclaimed work as St. Vincent, Clark has demonstrated an unbridled creativity and commitment to pop experimentation, making her a favorite with fans and critics alike. Her recordings may be stunning, but it's her talents as a performer that really make Clark stand out — taking the stage in an architectural gown, Clark's otherworldly movements and ethereal vocals are the stuff of legend, making her 2014 tour dates a must for any fan of true avant-pop spectacle.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Born in Oklahoma, Annie Clark, a.k.a. St. Vincent, took up the guitar at age 12, going on to play in her high school's jazz band as a teenager. After spending three years at Boston's Berklee College of Music in the early '00s, Clark dropped out to pursue real-world musical experience, joining the Polyphonic Spree for their European tour. In 2006, she left the band to join Sufjan Steven's touring band, beginning to record as St. Vincent the same year. Her 2007 debut album  Marry Me received praise for its intricate arrangements and unexpected compositional twists, paving the way for the success of 2009 sophomore effort Actor, a Top 10 hit on Billboard's Independent Albums Chart. With the early-2014 release of her fifth album, Clark once again drew unilateral praise from critics, cracking the Top 20 of the Billboard 200 and embarking on an international headlining tour.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

" Even better live than on her albums, St. Vincent lit up the Fox. It was an awesome mashup reminiscent of Bowie, Mercury and Gaga. I loved it, and will be back for more."

"Gorgeous songs, surprising choreography, enchanted excitement. I urge anyone who loves sophisticated pop to see this show."

"Yes, yes, yes, and yes! Great playing, awesome sound, killer production aesthetics and an overall great SHOW. St. Vincent and her band are kicking butt and taking names."

Annie Clark was an amazing performer. She shreds at guitar.

Wonderfull...theatrical, loud, powerful...the musicians played the hell out of every song and I loved seeing the theremin played live (for the first time) on Northern Lights! So cool!

I like St. Vincent; she is a very talented singer and shreds on guitar. But, her latest record was something of a disappointment. Opening act was interesting, solo guitar synth with a lot of backing tapes, kind of ambient/noise. As to St. Vincent, she had three backing musicians including an over-amped drummer, too loud and out of balance. A lot of lighting effects, but I did not sign up to see Lady Gaga. The crowd liked it but I think she could do better with more concentration on her singing and more musicality. I liked what she did in collaboration with David Byrne. The Fox is a great venue and even at my relatively advanced age, I really dug Sigur Ros, so I am open to avant-guard. I wanted to like this more than I did.

  • Mount St. Vincent blows its top

by KwameBruno on 3/25/14Fox Theater - Oakland - OaklandRating: 5 out of 5

Awesome. Strange. Volcanic. Minimal set (little white ziggurat), minimal band (drums, two keyboards, Annie Clark's guitar), massive, surging sound. That high fragile voice shot through with hards of metal, electric Miles aggression, punk mayhem. Weird robot mannerisms (on loan from David Byrne?) and kooky canned stage patter. I was worried at first it would all be just too tightly orchestrated and rehearsed. But then the lava spills over, loud, hot, and corrosive noise. Annie's got a way with a guitar--I know "shredding" is usually applied to another style of playing, but I think it's more apt for what she does: when she's done, there's nothing left but little scraps of lint floating in the air.

Amazing performance. Excellent musicianship and energy. Maybe theater sound could be better.

She was great! my seats were great! getting in was easy unlike most venues. I was blown away by her voice, her guitar playing and her ability to dance while doing both <3 hope to see her again soon

  • Well.... St. Vincent lived up to all the hype!

by LostAtSean on 3/25/14Fox Theater - Oakland - OaklandRating: 5 out of 5

Even better live than on her albums, St. Vincent lit up the Fox. I was pretty impressed with the sheer athleticism of her performance. It was an awesome mashup reminiscent of Bowie, Mercury and Gaga. I loved it, and will be back for more.

Wow, I'm really glad that I got to hear Annie Clark perform live as St. Vincent last night! I've been a fan since Strange Mercy was released in 2011 but it wasn't until the the release of her self-titled album that I truly fell in love with her music. She soared on her guitar throughout the evening...amazing guitar playing skills...and her voice sounded just like it does on the records. I appreciated how at one point during the show, she used her body and spotlights to create a very cool visual effect. That's something I hadn't seen other artists do in the past. Also, there were a couple of spoken-word segments (such as when Annie talked about using a magnifying glass to burn insects as a child...although fairly dark, something that many could probably relate to...so a unique way for her to better connect with the audience?) that reminded me of United States, the introspective magnum opus performance-art piece by experimental music pioneer Laurie Anderson whose zenith of popularity occurred during the 80's era. But for me, the highlight of the St. Vincent show was the song "Cruel" which sounded so much stronger and tremendous in live form. Clearly 2014 marks the year that Annie has come into her own...this achieved in part by borrowing from, reinventing and building upon the work of some of the greatest musicians of all time. The influences that have helped to shape her music such as Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Prince are groups that I enjoyed listening to regularly back in the day so it makes sense that her sound is so appealing to me. Overall the show was excellent and led me to conclude that St. Vincent has the staying power to be around in the indie pop rock genre of the music industry for many years to come. I look forward to attending future St. Vincent concerts.

I had seen St Vincent play guitar before with The National, but this was the first time seeing her in concert. All I can say is wow. All around great show. I have been to hundreds of concerts in my life and this one cracked the top 10 all time for sure. Just an amazing artist and an amazing concert

  • Great performance.

St. Vincent played for over one and a half hours. Great energy throughout. Really enjoyed the David Byrne-like qualities for her performance. Highlights were Rattlesnake, Cheerleader and Northern Lights.

I heard she was good but didn't expect the whole show to be amazing. You can tell she put a lot of effort into her performances.

  • St. Vincent was great, Terminal 5 was not

    by Mershguy on 3/3/14Terminal 5 - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

This is the first time I've seen St. Vincent without David Byrne and she was just as great on her own. Amazing guitar solos & a fun energy onstage. Sound & performance was spot on.

First half of the concert was excellent. Great stage presence and visual presentation. Her new music is excellent. Second half of the concert disappointed with an overly brash, discordant sound. Annie Clark's voice was somewhat drowned out in the mix too.
