About

ST. VINCENT IN CONCERT:

Possessing a rare combination of art-school appeal and mainstream accessibility, St. Vincent's Annie Clark is well on her way to full blown pop stardom. From her collaborations with David Byrne and Sufjan Stevens to her acclaimed work as St. Vincent, Clark has demonstrated an unbridled creativity and commitment to pop experimentation, making her a favorite with fans and critics alike. Her recordings may be stunning, but it's her talents as a performer that really make Clark stand out — taking the stage in an architectural gown, Clark's otherworldly movements and ethereal vocals are the stuff of legend, making her 2014 tour dates a must for any fan of true avant-pop spectacle.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Born in Oklahoma, Annie Clark, a.k.a. St. Vincent, took up the guitar at age 12, going on to play in her high school's jazz band as a teenager. After spending three years at Boston's Berklee College of Music in the early '00s, Clark dropped out to pursue real-world musical experience, joining the Polyphonic Spree for their European tour. In 2006, she left the band to join Sufjan Steven's touring band, beginning to record as St. Vincent the same year. Her 2007 debut album  Marry Me received praise for its intricate arrangements and unexpected compositional twists, paving the way for the success of 2009 sophomore effort Actor, a Top 10 hit on Billboard's Independent Albums Chart. With the early-2014 release of her fifth album, Clark once again drew unilateral praise from critics, cracking the Top 20 of the Billboard 200 and embarking on an international headlining tour.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

" Even better live than on her albums, St. Vincent lit up the Fox. It was an awesome mashup reminiscent of Bowie, Mercury and Gaga. I loved it, and will be back for more."

"Gorgeous songs, surprising choreography, enchanted excitement. I urge anyone who loves sophisticated pop to see this show."

"Yes, yes, yes, and yes! Great playing, awesome sound, killer production aesthetics and an overall great SHOW. St. Vincent and her band are kicking butt and taking names."

    Annie Clark is a Genius.

by CodesAndClues on 10/20/11The Music Box - Hollywood

I don't throw words like "genius" around lightly. Annie Clark is a genius. There is nothing else like St. Vincent. The music is smart and quirky and surprising. And Annie Clark is adorable. All of this might make you think that St. Vincent is for pointy-heads who like pretty girls - not that there is anything wrong with that - but that hardly describes what you get at a St. Vincent performance. Annie Clark's voice is sweet, but her guitar-playing is aggressive (which makes for an unsettling and interesting combination), and the music feels like it is on the edge of chaos, ready to break loose at any moment and go off the rails.

Great show! Lighting and sound was excellent and performance by St. Vincent was superb. Opening act was not good and paled in comparison to the headlining act.

Heavy on quirk, heavier on charm

by jvajgrt on 2/16/10Bluebird Theater - Denver

St. Vincent did not disappoint, and I had very high expectations. She's almost as adorable and charming as she is talented. Her band was very impressive in support, too. The packed-crowd was very enthusiastic, and Annie was obviously moved by the turnout and the ovations that she received.

    I love St. Vincent too

    by BillK2 on 2/16/10Bottleneck - Lawrence

I first became interested in St. Vincent after hearing them on Austin City Limits, then I bought their CDs. By chance I saw that they would be playing here in Lawrence, and I had to go. I am so glad I did as I enjoyed hearing them live very much. The live versions of their music are even better than those on the CDs (which are of course very good as well). I must admit that their encore of "Red Lips" seemed a little bit loose, but I still liked it. Annie also did a solo of the Beatles song "I Dig a Pony" which was very cool. She also mentioned that she had a sister that attended school here (KU), that she had visited Lawrence years ago, and that some of here family was in the audience. It was very nice to hear her give the audience some personal information like this. She is a very talented musician, and her music is both unique and enjoyable - at least to me and the packed house that she played to. One technical note: there was a bit of a "buzz" in the sound system, but it wasn't so bad that it adversely affected my overall enjoyment of the music. I hope I get to hear St. Vincent live again one day, and I look forward to new music of theirs in the future.

Possibly the greatest artist of the decade

by UncertainModernist on 2/15/10El Rey Theatre - Los Angeles

Annie Clark and her band are amazing, spectacular live as they are on record, althouth I miss some of the more subtle touches in the studio versions of the songs (for example, the out-of-this-world piano that you hear in the studio version of "...Lips..."). Still, they make up for it by showcasing the edgier side of Annie's guitar. The highlight of the live shows for me is to hear the violin and woodwinds interplay with the aggressive lead guitar. I can think of no other touring band that can illuminate the detailsof the music and rock like that. I can't pick a favorite moment, but I'll tell you the least favorite: The pre-show wait at the El Rey. While waiting for the show to start, the idiot DJ of the El Rey must have played the worst, crappiest music ever!, annying the hell out of everybody. Don't these DJs have a clue as to what kind of music the St. Vincent audience might like to hear as a warm-up?

    Better Live

by liztheaspirant on 2/15/10Bluebird - Denver

Annie was great in an intimate concert setting. She primarily played songs from her recent album, Actor, but Paris is Burning and Your Lips are Red were her encore songs. It was fabulous to see her get out the guitar and her voice held true to album quality. Overall: simply beautiful. The opening act was Wildbirds and Peacedrums, and their live performance is quite a bit better than their studio work. They had incredible energy and definitely rocked it. A great pairing.

    Annie Clark is amazing!

by Kenimic on 2/10/10El Rey Theatre - Los Angeles

The venue of El Rey Theatre had a very warm feeling and the performances felt quite intimate. The opening band Wildbirds & Peacedrums had a very unique sound using percussion instruments to create their music, although I never heard of them before, it was very enjoyable. Then St. Vincent came out and all their songs were stellar and I very much enjoyed the performance Annie Clark showed. She can truly shred on the guitar and I enjoyed the evening immensely.

Annie was incredible, the vibe was great.

by Bapudi on 2/10/10El Rey Theatre - Los Angeles

A transcendent experience. Annie really seemed loose and having fun. I had never seen St. Vincent live, and expected a lot of it to be sequenced loops, but it's all live (with minor exceptions). Annie *really* knows how to grind that guitar, almost reminds me of Hendrix sometimes. She takes the songs further than she does on the albums, opens them up a bit and explores their territory. What a treat! The songs are so perfect already, and then to have her making more of them as you watch... amazing. The lighting and stagecraft was brilliant, and for once THE MIX WAS RIGHT. The mix was perfect, I could hear every sound and her voice was front and center. Yay! Oh, and even the opening act was really good. Best show I've been to in a long time.

St. Vincent is jaw-dropping, soul-shredding live

by Xenu on 11/9/09El Rey - Los Angeles

I saw St. Vincent at El Rey in Los Angeles and it was easily one of the top performances I have seen all year. Annie is an incredibly gifted vocalist and musician, and her skills translate unbelievably well in a live setting. Still thinking about it sends chills down my spine.
