St. John's Red Storm Men's Basketball History

St. John's University played its first men’s basketball game in 1907. In 1910-11, St. John's went 11-0 and were retroactively awarded a national championship by the Helms Athletic Foundation. Across 30 appearances in the NCAA March Madness tournament, the Red Storm reached the Final Four in 1952 and 1985 and lost the National Championship game to Kansas in 1952. St. John’s has also had success in the National Invitation Tournament, winning five times in 1943, 1944, 1959, 1965 and 1989.

Lou Carnesecca famously coached St. John's from 1965 to 1992, except for three seasons when he coached the New York Nets of the ABA, and never had a losing season with the Red Storm basketball team. Since 1979, St. John's basketball has been synonymous with Big East basketball, winning six conference regular-season championships and four Big East tournaments in that span. Behind the play of Chris Mullin, St. John's became one of three Big East teams, along with Villanova and Georgetown, to play in the 1985 Final Four. In 2025, St. John's reached their first NCAA Tournament since 2019 and captured both the conference regular season and tournament titles.

  • Nice time but....

by Mitch on 2/26/25Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 4 out of 5

Big UConn Fan and disappointed in the results but it was a fun time at the World's Greatest Arena. However, I just felt that even though it was a St. John's home game, having the Public Address Announcer consistently refer to Alex Karaban, as Alex Kar-A- BAN?? was completely unprofessional and insulting in a way that is usually reserved for unruly fans, not paid announcers that should show a bit more maturity.

  • College Basketball Experience

by J Wood on 2/23/25Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

Visited New York from the UK and couldn't pass up the chance to see basketball at the Garden. The Knicks were away so a College game it would have to be. Well we weren't disappointed. A sell out crowd with all the great entertainment and a fast passed game showcasing the next NBA players. Loved it.

  • Magical experience

by Rodrigo Moraes on 2/21/25Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

The experience was magical, like as I am watching an NBA game! The immersive sound of the stadium, the vibrant color of it's big screen, the entertainement and on the court.

  • Excellent experience for a first time basketball game!

by GW on 2/21/25Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

A quick trip to New York from the UK and have done most of the sights but really wanted to go and watch a game at Madison Square Garden, this just happened to be the game we could make. Really didn't know what to expect but it was a fantastic atmosphere, very loud and energetic - didn't particularly understand what was going on with all the timeouts and fouls, but was great to experience. Was one of the highlights of our visit.

Nothing better than a soldout MSG with a St Johns WIN. Old times back at MSG with better food choices. Will be back. The STORM is rising!!!

  • Great!

by Kathy S on 2/19/25Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

Great facility, smooth process entering, staff helpful, seats comfy too and all amenities very nice. Impressive!!! Our only wish was that the escalators would have been running after the game. Tough on older adults. We will definitely return. St. John's is fortunate to have access to this great place. K and J NC

  • Great experience

by Two sons and Father trip to MSG on 2/19/25Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

My two sons who live in the Albany, New York area and I their father who lives in Allentown, Pennsylvania attended Sundays St. John's game at 3 pm versus Creighton. We drove together from my home in PA to Morristown, NJ and took the NJ Transit to Pennsylvania Station. Our seating location was excellent as was the game. We loved the experience of sitting with over 19,000 fans of college basketball.

by Zee1 on 1/14/25Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

Classic Big East basketball game with talented players and coach Rick Pitino that was great to watch at MSG. It was a Saturday night game and the arena was full of passionate fans on both sides. A lot of entertainment at halftime and in between time outs.

  • Exhilarating

by DonMon on 1/14/25Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

The St John’s - Villanova game had the excitement of games in the mid 80’s. The Garden was buzzing and each possession contained drama and tension.

  • Great Event and Easy to Enter/Leave

by Joey on 1/14/25Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

Great Basketball game. The Saturday night was nearly at capacity and the seats I had provided me a great view from up ahead in the chase bridge area.

  • Go Johnnies Go!!!

by Ed on 1/14/25Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

I bought tickets for several of us and was able to easily transfer them. Access to the Garden was quick and easy. Seats were amazing. Plenty of food options and the lines moved fast if there even was one. I know it was a sell out but you didn't feel like that held you behind.

  • Excellent game but seats in Section 201 are hideously small

by James on 1/14/25Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 3 out of 5

Great college hoops game at MSG between St. John's and Villanova. Everything about the event, other than the seats themselves, was excellent. The staff, the sound, the view, etc. However, the seats in Section 201, and apparently all of the 200-level sections other than perhaps barstool seating (not sure), are hideously small. If you're big, you're going to feel uncomfortable, even in an aisle seat like I had. If you're exceptionally tall (over 6'1 or so), you're going to wedged up against the seat in front of you. If you're both big and tall, prepare for misery. Or better yet, don't go.

  • CARNESECCA ARENA WAS ELECTRIC!

by “BUZZ” CLAY on 1/7/25Carnesecca Arena - QueensRating: 5 out of 5

I went and checked out my St. John’s Redstorm Men’s Basketball Team Hoop Against Butler. Was an absolute Nail Biter. St John’s pulled out the win literally within the last 1 minute of regulation. I haven’t been to a St. John’s game in a few years. Was great to see Legendary Coach Rick Pittino at Work, and St John’s Hinored and Memorialized the Late Lou Carnessecca. Great experience!!
