St. John's Red Storm Men's Basketball History

St. John's University played its first men’s basketball game in 1907. In 1910-11, St. John's went 11-0 and were retroactively awarded a national championship by the Helms Athletic Foundation. Across 30 appearances in the NCAA March Madness tournament, the Red Storm reached the Final Four in 1952 and 1985 and lost the National Championship game to Kansas in 1952. St. John’s has also had success in the National Invitation Tournament, winning five times in 1943, 1944, 1959, 1965 and 1989.

Lou Carnesecca famously coached St. John's from 1965 to 1992, except for three seasons when he coached the New York Nets of the ABA, and never had a losing season with the Red Storm basketball team. Since 1979, St. John's basketball has been synonymous with Big East basketball, winning six conference regular-season championships and four Big East tournaments in that span. Behind the play of Chris Mullin, St. John's became one of three Big East teams, along with Villanova and Georgetown, to play in the 1985 Final Four. In 2025, St. John's reached their first NCAA Tournament since 2019 and captured both the conference regular season and tournament titles.

From start to finish, the entire Garden experience was awesome. The Red Storm played nearly flawless basketball in the 2nd half, and victory was never in doubt. I can't wait to get back to the Garden!!

Getting to the event was fine. The game itself was very sloppy.

Section 324 smelled of urine, not sure if from nearby bathrooms or something else, not pleasant. Hopefully a one-time occurence. Seats and view were good.

  • MSG St. John vs Syracuse

Well, I was late to the game because I was stuck in the Lincoln Tunnel for over an hour. I got to will call at 7:05 for a 7:00 game. I didn't get to my seats until 7:55. 50 minutes online at will call? MSG has been around for years and they can't get will call right?

  • St John's was amazing. #1 Team in the USA!!!

by brendanA on 1/6/11Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

What a game. And for only $60? I would have paid $600 for these seats. Ooops, I guess Tickemaster will raise the prices now. No biggie, I'll pay whatever they want to see the REDSTORM play hoops. Lavin, Coack K, John Wooden, Dean Smith, Norm Roberts, Bobby Gonzolez- those are some great hoops coaches!

  • Great game at the Garden

Getting the ticket printed at home to save shipping or standing at the Will Call Kiosk was a very convenient way to make my arrangements.

The event was fun and both my wife and I had an enjoyable time. The venue was cool and the workers we encountered were very helpful. Overall a good experience.
