    Good family entarteinment

by CFDO on 11/5/13Carolina Theatre - Durham

I had no idea on what to expect, as I bought the tickets without reading other reviews for the show. This is not a high tech thing, but rather a traditional illusion-focused show with some amazing moments. Spencer makes no secret that what he does is not magic and is not real, but keeps your attention all the time as you are not able to figure how he dies what he does.

Nice guy but boring and obvious magic

    by reptile1 on 11/5/13Carolina Theatre - Durham

Old tricks that all depend on machinery, very little skill. OK for kids for about half an hour. You can figure out almost every one of his tricks. Even if you can't you've seen them all done better. Nice guy with great personal warmth but that's about it.

Had a BLAST at Spencers Theatre of Illusion!

by LanieA on 11/5/13Carolina Theatre - Durham

I wasn't certain what to expect, but it was so entertaining! He engages the audience, even simple illusions made me scratch my head and look at my friend saying "how'd he DO that?" I like the way he explained what was going to happen, how he selected the volunteers from the audience and really kept me wanting more. Afterwards, he was genial, welcoming and seemed pleased that the audience appreciated his and his wife's work. It was great fun. I'd go again!

Great family event that will truly appeal to kids of all ages. While some of the illusions were not truly top drawer... it was all fun!

    Fun show.

by EvilEd on 11/5/13Carolina Theatre - Durham

Spencer is a likeable guy, doesn't take himself too seriously. The smaller tricks were the best (Chinese box, pompoms, bottles, newspaper}. Some of the bigger ones weren't that mystifying, though fun to watch. He needs to get rid of the world traveler one, which is obviously just math and not that amazing. Fun for a family.

Don't waste your time or money.

by NCFergie on 11/5/13Carolina Theatre - Durham

I was so excited to go see the show so I bought 4 tickets for my family and told my neighbor about it she also bought 4 tickets and we went together. Once seating opened they played very loud annoying music. After 1/2 hour the show began and it was more talking then magic. In our group we had a 7, 10 & 17 year old kids and 4 adults, no one was wowed. Mr. Specer talked & talked made jokes that he laughed at but were not really funny. Their website show a spectacular show which is what we expected and never got. At one point he said he was going to show us the types of magic he did when he was 8 years old. Well I didn't really pay that much in tickets and gas to see the quality of show that was presented. Carolina Theater was very pretty and clean but the show was a disappointment for everyone & a waste of money.

    Not much illusion

by TimWakeForest on 11/5/13Carolina Theatre - Durham

I was expecting a genuine theater of illusion. However, by the time we had gotten through the first three or four tricks, and I had been able to---very easily---discern how these tricks were done, we made the decision to leave after the first half. Now, let me clarify: I have no real knowledge of magic shows or magic tricks. But these tricks were so obvious. In one, for example, there is the illusion of his assistant/wife having her legs and torso separated. However, all anyone had to do was simply remember how she had been dressed (bluejeans with tear marks in the upper kneecaps) to realize that what they showed us in the lower cabinet was not her, but rather possibly just a panel with bluejeans attached. There were no rips, and the colors did not even match. In a separate trick, cinderblocks are stacked on two metal rods. The idea is that no one should be able to slip through the cabinet that these blocks are mounted in front of because there is no room to slip through. However, when they spin the cabinet around, it is very obvious that the cabinet is wide enough. But… most glaringly, when the cabinet is turned around attempting to lead us believe that we are looking at the rearview of those same cinderblocks, it is pretty obvious that we are looking at a painted panel. How do I know this? Because when they turned the cabinet, the top right corner of the panel i.e. the 220 pound stack of cinderblocks, pronounceably wiggled. I will say, though, that he had a lot of charm and charisma and if it'd not been for that my opinion would've been even lower. The thing is… When people spend their time and money to see a magic show, they're showing up to be wowed and given a little bit of wonder. Apparently, judging from other reviews online, the spencers work, at one time, was much better than what they are currently delivering. Which is a bit sad.

    Pleasant but not exciting

by Cgoer on 11/5/13Carolina Theatre - Durham

I like magic and see several performances each year. This was ordinary magic relying heavily on machinery. Mr. Spencer was likeable but the schtick was a bit hokey. We certainly had a pleasant time, but the magic was not special or innovative.

    Family Fun Magic

by CRUISER911 on 6/6/13Bergen Performing Arts Center - Englewood

Kevin did some pretty amazing tricks and they were suitable for almost all age groups. He can get a little chatty but most of the talk leads up to the trick.

    Lots of talk, limited magic

by Lazybucket on 2/19/13Lexington Opera House - Lexington

While the Spencer's were enjoyable when actually doing illusions, they talked LOTS. Felt like much more talking than magic. Not worth the the price.

    Wardrobe Changes & Applause

by Jipper16 on 2/17/13Lexington Opera House - Lexington

While some of the illusions weren't exactly incomprehensible, there were more times than not that left me scratching my head trying to figure things out. One thing I learned above all else at my first magic show, is that magician's love their wardrobe changes and applause. My personal nature is to be a skeptic. The truth is there were illusions done that I simply couldn't explain, the Spencer's were entertaining , funny and they put on a good show. The audience certainly seemed to enjoy themselves and the family is very likable. To me those are some of the most important things.

Always amazed watching this kind of event. Very safe family event, will have your kids asking how was that done, and you will not know either, guess it's just magic.
