In 2020, Son Volt planned to celebrate the 25th anniversary of seminal album, Trace, with a tour that played the album from top to bottom. The pandemic had other plans. Flash forward to 2023 and they are on the road with a setlist that features Trace from beginning to end, an homage to Doug Sahm (Sir Douglas Quintet, Texas Tornados) and a celebration of 28 years of Son Volt. Son Volt's latest record, Day of the Doug, revisits the music of legendary Texas troubadour Doug Sahm. It is a summoning and a celebration of a songwriter and performer whose work forged country, Tex-Mex, rock, rhythm and blues, folk, and psychedelia into an utterly unique American sound. "It's like reconnecting with a hero," says Son Volt founder Jay Farrar. "And getting back to the same kind of perspective I had when I was starting out as a younger musician. I think it's just important to step back from what you normally do. Take stock. Take inspiration. And see where it leads from there."
Thoroughly enjoyed seeing Son Bolt after many years. Jay & the band played all the classics & even 2 Uncle Tupelo bones. It was awesome!
My favorite Son Volt concert to date, out of the 8 I’ve experienced. Jay was practically effusive on his home turf. Thanks for a great show. John looked more comfortable in his new role than he was at Knuckleheads in September 2021. Both Marks were fabulous per usual and Andrew exuded kindness along with exceptional bass playing. It was so, so great!!! Oh-and Jesse!! Great opener and addition to Windfall.
Particularly enjoyed the opening act, frontman Jesse Farrar of Old Salt Union, nephew of Son Volt leader Jay Farrar. Beautiful voice and great guitar. Son Volt hit several high notes. Loved seeing them for second time.
Simply put...Great sound, great songs, great band. Jay is still at the top of his game, and John Horton has added another level of sound.
So glad i waited to see Son Volt at the Birchmere. One of my favorite venues and a favorite band I had not had the opportunity to see live before. Bought the tickets quite a while back and never knew for sure if the show would happen due to C-19 but it did. Jesse Farrar was an entertaining opener (he can really play the guitar) and then Son Volt was amazing.
It was a great show as always. The band always spot on, never mail it in.
Another great show by the band. I’ve seen them four times in the last three years. Twice in the last six months. They are always tight and professional. The Birchmere show was no different. Money well spent
Son Volt always delivers an eye-opening, foot-stomping, spirit-invigorating performance!
I was really excited to see one of my favorite bands at one of my favorite venues, the Bijou Theater in Knoxville, TN. The opening act, John R. Miller (who I had never heard of) blew us away with their well crafted thoughtful songs! TBH they were worth the price of admission. Son Volt, on the other hand, played through their new album without passion. Jay stood nearly motionless behind black glasses, never addressing the audience except for a single “how’s everybody doing” and a quick band introduction. I’m not sure they even knew what city they were in. The Bijou has excellent acoustics, however the band was so loud you couldn’t hear the voice, much less the lyrics, of the new songs. I love kick drum and bass, but at a certain point it just merges into a wall of noise, even in the best of theaters. They did go back and play some old favorites, like “Windfall” but my favorite moment was probably their cover version of The Preacher” (The Who) during the encore.
Fun show to watch, song after song, without much talking in between.
I am sure the show was awesome but it should have been held in a bigger venue. We were not able to find any space to occupy inside the hall and had to observe on screen in the bar.
Jay Farrar is an amazingnsong wroter, singer ans guitar player. Inhadnt seen Son Volt in 20 years. They did not disappoint. And they had lots of albums on vinyl (though I wish they would put out Wide Swing Tremelo on vinyl). The opening act (Old Salt Union) is so much fun. Ive seen them twice now. They are all fantastic musicians. And their energy is infectious.
It was awesome that Old Salt Union opened for Son Volt. That special hometown family connection! Loved it all!!
Everything was great about the show! The venue and the service was excellent. Smaller venue but very intimate and the bands sounded great! Old Salt Union opened up and played for roughly an hour and put on a great show. Son Volt came on next and played a great 2hr set highlighting their lastest album "Union" in the first half or so but spanning their entire career. Then they brought the house down with their final song, "Chickamauga" from Jay's previous band Uncle Tupelo and had everyone on their feet. Great all around experience. One of, if not best concert, I've ever been to.
Great show! Son Volt was excellent. The staff at the Neptune are welcoming and helpful. Facility is clean. A lovely, retro, preserved theater. Love the original concession at front door. W/C access questionable, undoubtedly due to preservation of the original theater. I like the ramp to the balcony.
Sound balance was off so the bass drowned out the vocals. Too bad so it is a great band.
Jay Farrar and Company were spot on. Played the new album and a couple earlier tunes. The venue, Union Chapel on Martha's Vineyard, is a beautiful venue. Thanks to WMVY Radio for bringing great music to the Island.
My 5th time seeing Son Volt and this one was my favorite so far. They're just a well oiled machine. The atmosphere and set list was fantastic. The stage @ the backyard should be raised a few feet imo. All in all a night that I won't forget.
Son Volt was fantastic...but the Backyard Stage needs to be raised up several feet as you can't see the drummer or keyboard player...The band though was great!!!
Jay Farrar and crew never cease to amaze me live. The band played a majority of Son Volt's newest record Notes of Blue, as well as favorites and deep cuts alike from prior releases.
