With 10 Tony® nominations including Best Musical, SOMETHING ROTTEN! is a “big, fat hit!” (New York Post). Set in the ‘90s – the 1590s – this hilarious smash tells the story of Nick and Nigel Bottom (Tony® nominee Rob McClure and Broadway’s Josh Grisetti), two brothers who are desperate to write their own hit play while the "rock star" Shakespeare (Tony® nominee Adam Pascal) keeps getting all the hits. When a local soothsayer foretells that the future of theatre involves singing, dancing and acting at the same time, Nick and Nigel set out to write the world’s very first MUSICAL! With its heart on its ruffled sleeve and sequins in its soul, SOMETHING ROTTEN! is “The Producers + Spamalot + The Book of Mormon. Squared!” (New York Magazine).

If you like Broadway, this romp through the Renaissance, including riffs on Shakespeare, keeps the audience laughing out loud throughout. The acting is superb, the music is fun, the plot twists and turns, and the Chicago Theater is quite amazing, too.
Thoroughly enjoyed this production. Loved the story and if you are a fan of musicals, you will get a kick out of the references.
When this was on broadway, I thought, it this every comes to Chicago I need to go. Thank goodness I was watching for it. We went on a Tuesday night and while not a full house, still was very well attended. This may be the funniest show I have ever seen. My entire group was laughing all the way through the show and all the way home after. Days later we are still listening to the soundtrack all over our house. If you get the chance to see this, don't miss out!
Hard to understand. Device for hearing impaired headset was so loud the guy five seats away was like he was right next to me. Show was so so.
Sound was awful. Only heard the lead and a few of the others. I'm never going to sit in the dress circle again.
This show was amazing! Funny! I hope it comes back again!!
Stop reading this review, and go buy your tickets. I had high hopes for this show after seeing it on the Tonys. It far exceeded my hopes!! I laughed so hard, I cried through most of it. You won't regret seeing this show.
This was one of the best musical/comedies I have seen in years. The whole performance was perfect from beginning to end. The acting, singing, dancing, and costuming was spectacular. This would be one musical I would want to see again.
The show was amazing and the cast was incredibly talented and kind. They all came out with a smile of the stage door and went above and beyond!!
We enjoyed every minute of this whitty show. We judge musicals on wether or not we are humming the songs when we leave the show, and in this case, there were several we hummed all the way home.
Great story, funny, funny, funny songs and gags. A truly wonderful play.
Outstanding show! Never stopped smiling throughout the entire show. Just wonderful.
Something Rotten! is not for everyone but it is entertaining, particularly if you are familiar with both Shakespeare and musical theater. No, it doesn't get all the historical facts "right" (there was actually music in many Shakespeare plays, though they weren't the typical musical plot development songs), but the dancing/choreography was impressive and the silly tone helped me overlook any errors--not that in that silliness there weren't a few deeper, serious issues addressed. However, the older woman sitting next to me did not return after the intermission (she didn't look like she was enjoying the show), possibly because of the innuendos and raunchier jokes. So there are three reasons (lack of knowledge of Shakespeare or musicals and some of the jokes) a viewer wouldn't enjoy this show very much, but even without the further knowledge, most viewers would still find this entertaining.
Wanted to see this play 2 years ago when we were in New York, but it didn't happen. I can't imagine it could have been any better than this production. Thoroughly enjoyed every minute of this play! What a treat! The big numbers were BIG! Wow! Every actor was perfect for their role and played it to a tee! The music was clever and great fun. The tap numbers were fabulous! Loved the references to modern day musicals! It's not miserable, I believe it's Miserables! What a hoot! Would love to meet the writers of such a creative work. I'd see it again in a heart beat!!!
This musical comedy is a must see for anyone who enjoys musicals. The play is about friendship and about the "invention" of the musical n Shakespearean times. The music and dancing are great, and there is not a single less than wonderful performer. I haven't laughed out loud at a play in years. Do yourself a favor, and go see Something Rotten. P.S. There is also closed caption on the side of the stage. It was not distracting, and I occasionally consulted it when I didn't catch the lyrics.
Singing, dancing exceptional! Silly plot, but a lot of fun!
Excellent acting, singing and dancing. Great show. However the bass in the orchestra was so loud that it was hard if not impossible to hear the singers. Even when the full chorus was singing. We had to order the CD so we can listen to the words in the songs. I blame this problem on the sound man not the orchestra. Needs a better sound man on the sound board.
Started a bit slow and uncertain, picked up speed, fun and gained momentum until I was laughing.
It was great. Wonderful music and very entertaining.
