About

Something in the Water Festival

"I made a promise to God that if I was able to see the world," Pharrell Williams posted on Instagram in early 2019, "I would bring the best of what I saw back to Virginia Beach." Williams is keeping his promise, presenting the result of his lifetime of travels and artistic collaborations to his hometown during the last weekend of April. He's calling the three-day festival of music, art, social consciousness, community engagement, and brand-building Something in the Water.

The festival unfolds along Virginia Beach's Oceanfront, with the main stage set up directly on the sprawling sandy beach. It spills into nearby venues, including the Convention Center. And it coincides with College Beach Weekend, which regularly brings to town tens of thousands of student revelers across the East Coast for a weekend of Spring Break sunshine and celebration. The 2019 lineup included Virginia Beach natives like Missy Elliott, Pusha T, and Dave Matthews Band as headliners.

Something in the Water Festival returns to Virginia Beach on April 24-26, 2020. Performers include A$AP Rocky, Baby Rose, Bae Worldwide, BANKS, Beck, Brittany Howard, Buddy, Chad Hugo, Chance the Rapper, Clipse, EarthGang, Foo Fighters, FriendsWithYou, Global Citizen, Gunna, H.E.R., Jaden Smith, Jozzy, JR, Kali Uchis, KAWS, KP The Great, LANY, Lauren Jauregui, Leon Bridges, Lil Tecca, Lil Tjay, Love Mansuy, Mahalia, Major Lazer, Mereba, Metro Boomin, Migos, Nelly, Nickelus F, Noodles, Pharrell & Friends, Playboi Carti, Pop Smoke, Pop-Up Church Service, Post Malone, Quinn XCII, Rema, Rico Nasty, Sabrina Claudio, Snoh Aalegra, SOSUPERSAM, Tank and the Bangas, The Head and the Heart, Tierra Whack, Trey Songz, Turnover, Tyler, the Creator, Usher, VENUS X, Wale and the Backyard Band, 070 Shake, 6LACK and 99 Neighbors. They are set to perform at the expanded festival, now with three beachfront stages.

    First festival experience

by Disappointed on 5/3/23Virginia Beach - Ocean Front - Virginia Beach

I was really looking forward to this festival due to it being my first festival ever. I was disappointed with the line up when it was released, I felt like a few more artists could have been placed on the list instead of others. Also, the Phriends portion of the festival was very mediocre. The few names that were released as part of the Phriends portion was essentially most of the friends. Not something I would have paid much money for, and I’m very grateful for the refund. Also, I purchased VIP passes and the entrance for VIP was 6th street. To get there, you had to pass 3 other GA entrances, which didn’t seem “VIP” ish. I think VIP should be the first entrance, and GA, be the entrances that follow. The stages were also really far from one another. I was told that the first year the stages were not that far apart. I wish the stages were closer so folks could get to different performances quicker There also needs to be a better way to exit the festival. If someone wanted to harm the beach, they’d succeed because there are no quick exit areas once the festival has ended for the night. We were packed like sardines trying to get to the street. Definitely not safe. Also, the shuttle was a great idea! If there’s anyway SITW can partner with the parking garages and sell tickets to park, that would also be great! They were charging wild prices to park for one day between 4th st and 9th st due to the fact that they are right at the beach. I’d pay a flat price for 3 days rather than almost $100/per day
