About

Snail Mail in Concert

Maryland singer, songwriter, and guitarist Lindsey Jordan is humble yet brutally honest, and it's this combination — along with some killer hooks and guitar moves — that has made her an indie pop star before the age of 20. As a young girl growing up in the suburbs of Baltimore, she was classically trained on the guitar, starting at age five. She also had quite a qualified mentor: Mary Timony, the voice behind noise-pop cult faves Helium, was one of her guitar teachers. Along with honing her chops on the six-string, she started to dabble in songwriting, inspired by fellow fierce female musicians like Liz Phair, Paramore's Hayley Williams and Grouper's Liz Harris. By 2015, at age 15, she formed the band Snail Mail with bassist Ryan Vieira and drummer Shawn Durham. The trio quickly landed a slot at a Maryland festival for their first performance, playing alongside notable indie artists like Priests and Screaming Females.

A small tour in 2016 followed before the release of the ‘Habit' EP on Priests' own label Sister Polygon Records. Jordan's raw, moody lyrics would belie her 16 years, and so would the jangling DIY music evoking 1990s indie rock at its height. The six-track collection would get the attention of a number of major music sites and publications, including a spot at NPR's Tiny Desk Concerts. This led to more touring, alongside like-minded indie acts like Girlpool and Waxahatchee, as well as her own headlining shows.

During this time, Jordan would graduate from high school and also make a key decision with her band. Snail Mail's lineup changed, with bassist Alex Bass and drummer Ray Brown now stepping in. Jordan then signed with the revered Matador Records and released her full-length debut album, ‘Lush,' in 2018. The album received plenty of accolades for its rich, clean, and poignant guitar pop. She'd soon take those sounds back on the road alongside Alvvays and Interpol.

    Disappointing performance

by CL on 4/27/22Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

This was my first time seeing Snailmail. They seemed to be having an off night. There were times when lyrics were forgotten and songs restarted. But everyone has an off day. In addition The sound quality was disappointing. At times the vocals were drowned out and inaudible and other times too loud and piercing. I will enjoy their recordings from now on.

    So bad!

Just very awkward. She has bad stage presence and so many technical issues.

    Off...

by MDG on 4/25/22Moore Theatre - Seattle

Not the concert experience I expected. No keyboard and her voice didn't quite sound right on most of the songs. Hopefully she's not performing too soon after surgery? The rest of the band and instruments sounded great but she kept missing cues to the beginning of lyrics and the opening band sounded awful. Not sure if it was the venue sound but it sounded slightly better on my phone the day after. Looking forward to catching up with this band in a few years to see if her voice and guitar skills catch up to the rest of the band's again. Came out of there a bit disappointed though 😞

    Just a horrible performance.

by Disappointed on 4/23/22Moore Theatre - Seattle

This woman cannot sing, her dancing was awkward and the mixing was horrible. Her voice was always either too quiet or too loud. There was also a plethora of technical issues. The battery on the acoustic guitar was literally dead. They were fixing the technical issues during half of the songs. The other half of the songs were just as bad because she was just had bad stage presence. I would rather her microphone be dead. Also the other band members just stood there. Lastly the venue was so weird. Everyone was sitting for the opener and no one danced for Snail Mail herself. I was excited for this concert but i wouldn’t ever go again. In fact, I can’t even listen to Snail Mail anymore because it takes me back to how horrible of an experience her concert was. I’ve unfollowed her on all platforms.

First time I can say the opener was better than the main act

    by N. S. on 4/21/22

Joy Again blew it out of the park but when I say they were so much better than Snail Mail, I mean it. It makes no sense to pick an opener with 4+ times your music streams and then to compete with that is super hard. Snail Mail is an excellent guitarist and her vocals were good the 5% of the time you could hear them. Their sound mixing is absolutely terrible and you can’t hear the lead AT ALL, me and my girlfriend left 3 songs into her set because it was so unbearable. We both compared her performance to a highschool talent show it was that mediocre, there was pretty much zero lighting design as well. Very disappointed considering the price we paid, Joy Again made the whole thing worth it so they get 5 stars in my book.

Lineup changed with no notice, didnt get what we paid for

by KindofaBummer on 4/19/22Liberty Hall - Lawrence

The show was ok, but the 2 openers (hotline TNT and momma) were at somepoint changed to just 1 opener (joy again (which was great but not what we came for)). At the show we only saw one flyer while leaving the venue that showed the correct line up, which was vastly outnumbered by flyers showing the original lineup not to mention there was nowhere online (artist/venue/promoter) that reflected the change. We wanted to see hotline TNT and momma and instead paid alot of money to see a band that wasn't supposed to be there and another we only had middling interest in (Snail Mail is good, but not quite our cup of tea).

    Solid performance, spotty sound mix

by Danny on 4/10/22Kings Theatre - Brooklyn

The performance was amazing! Some spotty sound mixing and volume missteps but the band powered through. Some instruments needed to be adjusted but overall was a great night

    Perfect

by Mila on 4/10/22Kings Theatre - Brooklyn

The opener Joy Again - they were just a little too quirky for my taste. Snail Mail sounded amazing! Was worried but that was fine. Setlist hit on all the right songs and though there wasn’t a ton of audience interaction, LJ seemed genuinely happy and appreciative of her crowd. Speaking of which, the vibe was pretty cool. Couple annoying people smoking/vaping but otherwise a great fan base and quite respectful of personal space!

    disaponited

by Sargent Galaxy on 8/25/19The Wiltern - Los Angeles

I go to a lot of concerts all the time and this one was a bit of a let down. The first act, the choir boys set was really good and there was no issues at all. However, with the next set and snail mail there were a lot of issues. The artist's constantly had to tune their instruments and kept having to have their volumes turned up on down on their their vocals, drums, guitar etc. When snail mail preformed my favor song (Slug), i was really let down since, the lead singer Lindsey's mic needed some work and i couldn't hear all the lyrics from the song when she was singing and i was sitting in the front row of the balcony! This was my first time at this venue as well and it was a bit of a pain to find parking and there was a ton of traffic. Needless to say if i can help it, I'll try and avoid going to this venue ever again.

    Great Show! Hard site lines

by S. on 8/6/19Webster Hall - New York

Snail Mail was great! Site lines were so-so for a short person like me. The second band on the bill did NOT match the vibe at all but we had a great time. WH looks SO GOOD after the renovation!

    GREAT SHOW, HORRIBLE VENUE

    by B. R. on 7/31/19Rex Theater - Pittsburgh

Both performers were great, but the sound system was horribly mixed, and the lack of a decent AC system made the place feel like an oven.

    Snail Mail is magical

by Alex on 1/31/19Neptune Theatre - Seattle

At the end of the set, the lead singer was left alone on the stage to play the last two songs of the set. Oh my goodness, what followed was some of the most impressive and touching moments of any live act I have even seen. I would highly recommend seeing this band live if you have the chance; it was so much more than just hearing their songs played live. The crowd kinda sucked, but other than that it was perfect!

Fuckin Lindsey Jordan man. She filled the theater with her heart beat, made me cry, and I ended up leaving with maybe a new crush.

Lindsey Jordan is simply amazing. She played bass in the opening act like it was nbd and then came back and crushed it on guitar.
