About

Smallpools called their shot with "Dreaming" - in the ten years since their 2013 debut single, the trio's experience has been nothing short of truly surreal. They've played festivals from Lollapalooza to Summerfest, earned RIAA gold and platinum plaques, amassed over 400 million Spotify streams, held their own in arenas and late night TV and, along with their peers and collaborators like Grouplove, Walk the Moon, Twenty One Pilots and Neon Trees, developed the sound that played a pivotal role to the development of the alt pop scene. They literally got "big in Japan," where "Dreaming" became a #1 single in 2015.

But lead vocalist Sean Scanlon did not draw on these incredible, indelible experiences when it came time to write the next chapter for Smallpools. Rather, he time traveled to the period right before the self-titled Smallpools EP in 2013, when he worked as a valet in a garishly opulent Los Angeles high rise. Scanlon would sequester himself In a model unit that was completely empty, save for Fendi furniture and the piano at which he composed most of the lyrics that ended up on "Dreaming." This was the seed from which "Night Shift" grew, the opener of their third studio LP Ghost Town Road, and also the first song of the rest of Smallpools' lives.

As a project that splits time between Los Angeles and Nashville, Scanlon, guitarist/producer Michael Kamerman and drummer Beau Kuther reflected on the evolution of each city in the decade since "Dreaming." "When the band first started, the goal was to play the free Monday nights at the Satellite, that's all we wanted to do," Kuther recalls.

Ghost Town Road announces a bold new era for Smallpools, while also a spiritual heir to the 2013 EP that started it all. "I feel like that was a definitive body of work, we were dialed in, you know?," Scanlon muses. "With this project, we're dialed back in." Kamerman views it less like a sequel and more like a franchise reboot a la Halloween or Ghostbusters - "The other music exists and you're free to revisit it," he states. "But we're back and we mean it."

  • A-mazing Performance

I had a WONDERFUL time celebrating my birthday and Mother’s Day at the Smallpools concert! They are incredibly talented and fun! The show was entertaining, engaging and dynamic! I super recommend it. I also loved getting to hear Tana Mats e Rec Hall, they were fantastic.

  • Fun venue, great bands

by Mel on 5/13/25Warsaw - BrooklynRating: 5 out of 5

I loved the venue and the tag line where perogis meet punk. All the staff were nice and helpful, which is not the case with many NY venues. I don't think the openers matched the energy of Smallpools, and when Smallpools came on, the set felt quick, just from how much energy they had. I did leave early, not because of anything to do with the band or venue, but the weekend subways are not great.

  • Amazing event across the board!

    by NeoDoc79 on 5/7/25The Loft - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

I had been waiting to see Smallpools in concert for over 10 years. I heard their music right after they released their first single and I was hooked, but was at a busy place in life with work and family, so never got to see them live. This 10th Anniversary Tour was my chance. So we loaded up and drove down to ATL to see them on their 3rd night and it was pure magic. It was my dream show, so I spent a little extra and did the VIP experience. It was amazing! The band was so wonderful. They took their time and made everyone feel welcomed. They talked and we laughed. They played some acoustic songs and then took pictures with us. Can’t say enough about how awesome they all were. And then the show… I couldn’t have dreamed up a better experience for us. Tana Matz was crazy good. So confident and talented. A one-woman show that had to end way too soon. I could have listened to her all night. Then Rec Hall came on and really got us going. I had only heard some of their music on streaming before, and it was just totally fire in person. But the Smallpools came on and just lit the place up. It was THE BEST! And all the musicians were amazing to us after the show. My kids went with us (an all-ages show), and everyone was so great to them. They got a set list from Rec Hall and Smallpools and all the band members signed each of them for the girls. It was amazing. Now for the Venue- Vinyl at Center Stage. I can seriously say that this was about as good of an experience as I’ve had at this kind of venue. The staff was so good! The bands were a little delayed, so the VIP didn’t start on time. But the event staff kept us informed and made sure we were prepared for when it was time to enter. One thing that I thought was really great was that we got some merch through the VIP package and they passed it out to us while we were in line before entering so we could take it to the car before the show and not have to hold it! That was really thoughtful. On entry, they were friendly and efficient. They were respectful during the Meet and Greet and left the room, giving us fans a great experience with Smallpools without distraction. The staff was present, but not obtrusive during the show. And then after, one of the security members helped my girls get the band to sign their set lists, even sharing his person pen. Thank you to the team at Vinyl for a great experience for us and our kids! I would 100% return to Vinyl to see another show. And of course, I would 100% go to another Smallpools, Rec Hall, or Tana Matz show.

  • One of the best concerts ever!

by Rebekah on 5/14/24Antone's Nightclub - AustinRating: 5 out of 5

Smallpools put on one of the best shows I've ever seen! Their energy and stage presence invite the whole audience in and it's impossible not to have a good time. Their music is so amazing and they sound fantastic signing it live. They talk to the audience like we're friends and get us involved in the show. I've seen them twice and I plan to see them as many times as possible, because every time I see them perform, I love their music more than before!

  • Incredible

Smallpools live were fantastic! They had incredible energy and are amazing live performers. I caught the drummer, Beau, sitting in the crowd, watching the openers. I had a quick chat with him, he was incredibly friendly. Definitely made me a lifelong fan with the short interaction. So excited to see them next time they’re in town!!

It was a fun event. The crowd surfing made it a little annoying but I just moved out of the middle of the venue and I was fine.
