SLASH featuring Myles Kennedy & the Conspirators on Tour

“I think it’s time to set this world on fire/I think it’s time to push it to the edge/I’m so f---in’ bored so trip the wire/It may never be this good again”

--From the opening power chords of the single and title track of WORLD ON FIRE

WORLD ON FIRE is the new album from SLASH featuring Myles Kennedy & the Conspirators, and it comes on full throttle and in-your-face, a hunk of burning rock ‘n’ roll that takes no prisoners. Intensifying the band’s sound and vision, it marks the follow-up to their succesful and acclaimed 2012 debut, Apocalyptic Love, also released on SLASH’s own indie Dik Hayd International label distributed through Caroline.

“We’ve been playing together for awhile and I think it’s gotten to the point where everybody’s comfortable in our own skins,” says Rock and Roll Hall of Fame guitarist SLASH, who has amassed album sales of over 100 million copies, with seven GRAMMY nominations, a GRAMMY award and countless accolades. “It turned out to be a very easy process. We definitely had chemistry from the very first time we entered a room together. It was instantaneous magic.”

WORLD ON FIRE represents that chemistry, as SLASH, vocalist MYLES KENNEDY, bassist TODD KERNS and drummer BRENT FITZ blaze through 17 songs that run the gamut of topics, some derived from tour bus conversations between the singer and guitarist. These range from the pointed sexual politics of “Battleground,” “Dirty Girl” and “Stone Blind,” the anti-war sentiments of “Dissident” and the coming-of-age saga “Bent to Fly,” to such charged issues as elephant poaching (“Beneath the Savage Sun”), child abuse in the Catholic Church (“The Unholy”), addiction (“Wicked Stone”) and the perils faced by females of a certain age in show business (“Withered Delilah”). There’s also a song inspired by Mad Men’s Don Draper (“Shadow Life”) and a rockin’ instrumental (“Safari Inn”).

“There are lots of different stories and themes on this album,” says KENNEDY, the vocalist for Alter Bridge who first played on SLASH’s self-titled 2010 debut solo release, and became an instant fit. “When SLASH sends me a chord progression or a riff, it’s like hearing music to a film. Ultimately, I am writing the script for the composition with lyrics and melodies inspired by what he sends me musically. I do my best to keep the story congruent with the mood of the track."

Unlike Apocalyptic Love, which was essentially recorded live in the studio, WORLD ON FIRE began with jamming by SLASH, KERNS and FITZ, who sent the results to KENNEDY. Produced by Mike “Elvis” Baskette (Alter Bridge, Falling in Reverse, Incubus, Iggy Pop, Chevelle) in his Orlando-based Studio Barbarossa and at L.A.’s NRG Studios, WORLD ON FIRE finds SLASH playing all the guitars this time around.

Make no mistake about it, though. This is no solo project, but a rock ‘n’ roll band, with all four members contributing their strengths to the whole.

“I was influenced by the group ethic as a kid coming up,” admits SLASH. “I would buy live records because that was the energy I craved. As soon as I picked up a guitar in junior high school, I started a band. That’s the vibe I’m looking for, the interaction between musicians. Having a singer whom I know where he’s at, and writing with him in mind, my songwriting skills have gotten a lot better.”

Those arrangements range from the acoustic strumming and “la la la” chorus of “Battleground” and the epic build of “Bent to Fly” to the distinctive SLASH guitar riff which opens “Iris of the Storm,” the wide-screen scope of “The Unholy,” with its sounds of children in the playground, and the jungle boogie instrumental of “Safari Inn.”

“I’ve learned a great deal through the whole process,” says KENNEDY, who splits his time between The Conspirators and Alter Bridge. ““Everybody’s on the same page and we’re all very proud of what we’ve done as a band on this record. There's a great chemistry between the 4 of us that continues to evolve with each recording.”

WORLD ON FIRE comes on the heels of the success of Apocalyptic Love, which debuted at #4 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart and produced SLASH’s first-ever No. 1 U.S. Rock radio solo hits in “You’re a Lie” and “Standing in the Sun.” With the release of Nothing Left to Fear last year--SLASH’s initial foray into horror pictures, co-produced by his Slasher Films--he began to broaden his horizons, a development which could be heard on WORLD ON FIRE, particularly on the very cinematic set-piece, “The Unholy.”

“That comes from an entirely different side of my brain,” SLASH admits. “I never usually write like that for a band, but I thought it would be pretty cool.”

KENNEDY, who comes from a Christian Scientist and Methodist background, based the song on what he was hearing from Catholic friends. “It’s not as silent as it once was,” he says of the institutionalized child abuse he tackles in the lyrics. “It’s really sad and heartbreaking because these are people you look up to, clergymen, who betray that trust.”

The lyrics of “Shadow Life” come from Kennedy’s fascination with the TV show “Mad Men” and the duplicity of its main character Don Draper. “That character fascinates me because the dark secrets he keeps, as well as the double life he leads, ultimately make his existence more complex and difficult."

“The Dissident” is about a soldier who comes to the realization that he no longer believes in what he is fighting for, while “Withered Delilah” gets inside how the entertainment industry can chew up and spit out women when they no longer have a use for them.

“This is basically a happy record with some dark subject matter,” acknowledges SLASH. “It ends up in a positive place, but it also leaves you with the idea not to get too comfortable.”

For SLASH featuring Myles Kennedy and The Conspirators, there is no time for that, as the band will intersperse their own headlining dates by appearing with Aerosmith on the celebrated “Let Rock Rule” tour in North America this summer, a jaunt they previewed with a surprise performance at the Whisky a Go Go earlier this spring.

“I’m really excited about it,” says SLASH. “There are not really too many bands I can feel comfortable partnering up with. When I first picked up the guitar, they were a huge influence my favorite band at the time, bar none. The Rocks album was a catalyst for me to pursue what it is I do now. Guns N’ Roses toured with them in the ‘80s. They always represented a certain kind of attitude, brashness and realism in rock ‘n’ roll I still to this day subscribe to.  We fit together really well.”

    An Absolute Marvel to Behold

by khood on 8/30/10The Warfield - San Francisco

With the combination of Slash and Myles Kennedy sharing the stage, you know without a doubt that the show has the potential to be great. But what they achieved last night in front of a packed Warfield Theater was one of the most amazing concerts I've ever witnessed. Myles Kennedy's voice is so incredibly fantastic with no apparent end to his vocal range. Slash was a virtuoso all night long. Delivering a set list that would fulfill any fan completely. The Band was tight and they played their hearts out all night long. The encore was amazing and wrapped up a night of perfection. If you haven't yet purchased Slash's CD, you are missing out!

I saw Slash play at the Warfield in the 90's. I rate that show as the greatest rock show I have ever seen. I was younger, Slash was younger, and the whole audience was younger. The energy of that night was amazing. Slash frequently played within hand's reach of the audience. I'll never forget Slash's finger work from that night. To live up to that night was a tall order and I don't think Slash or the band was able to approach it at last night's show. The average age of the audience was higher and it showed, I thought, in their reaction as the night wore on. I found the decibels of the show a little overwhelming and thought that the vocals were overpowered by the music. Slash played less over the audience and seemed somehow more human and less a rock god as he appeared to me in the 90's show.

    Miles and Slash were excellent!

by MagnumVIP on 8/30/10The Warfield - San Francisco

Had a great time at the Slash and Miles Kennedy concert. They performed G and R, Velvet Revolver, Led Zepplin, and suprisingly Alter Bridge! Lots of great guitar riffs, and Miles was right on with his vocals. I hope they put together a Live CD.

    Slash is awesome!

by madnessinmotion on 8/30/10The Warfield - San Francisco

The show was fantastic from beginning to end and what a fantastic end it was. The finale was one of the best finales I have ever experienced. I was completely wrapped up in the moment. They played several G&R songs and mixed them in perfectly with Slash's new music and never lost momentum. I could have watched another 2 hours with no problem.

Wow, what an amazing show at the Warfield in SF lastnight. My hears are still ringing. It was the seventh time I have seen him, three times with GNR and three times with Velvet Revolver. The first time was in 1988 when GNR opened for Aerosmith. He is as good as ever. That new singer is incredible. They did a killer version of Communication Breakdown. The band also performed Night Train, Civil War, Rocket Queen, Sweet Child O Mine, and Paradise City. If he is playing in your town, do not miss this show.

    SLASH IS GOD!

by Donbanania on 8/30/10The Warfield - San Francisco

The set was as eclectic as it gets: a few GNR songs, a 95 Snakepit song, a 2000 Snakepit song, a cover, a blues jam, a few Velvet Revolver songs, and of course plenty of Slash's solo stuff. Slash rips it, he's the man!

    Rocked the Warfield

by losface on 8/30/10The Warfield - San Francisco

This was one of the better concerts I've gone all year. Slash showed us he is still at the top of his game. If I had to pick something to complain about it would be that he left Welcome to the Jungle off the list, but besides that it was an amazing show!

Amazing show, Slash and the band worked super hard and gave it 110%. The Warfield is such a small and intimate venue for the event that the experience was like having Slash play in your living room.

Awesome concert! Slash rocked...my only complaint is that my ears are still ringing...no joke, my ears STILL hurt. Slash can still play with the best of them and Myles Kennedy has an amazing voice. Axl who?

    Blown away!!!

by Mont1 on 8/30/10The Warfield - San Francisco

I came to the show last night here in the city with high hopes. I'd seen G&R once, years ago on the Use Your Illusion tour and Slash was awesome. Then saw VR a few years back and that was a total disappointment. (Bad day? It happens.) So hopes were high with all the killer new material, not to mention Myles Kennedy. They opened with Ghost. 10 seconds into the riff i knew this was going to be a top 10 concert for me. Slash was on FIRE!!! Being a guitar player myself, i've always had respect for Slash. But he was on another plane, just nailing everything. So fast, so fluid, so effortless. We had high hopes pinned on Myles also, and man, did that dude ever deliver. He has an easy, humble grace onstage as well as the charisma to keep the crowd in his hands throughout the night. What a voice! I hope Slash keeps him as a permanent vocalist. Back to Cali was goose bump inducing. Myles handled all material, G&R, VR, Snakepit as well as other new songs not his own with command. These guys are my new heroes. The entire band was so tight, and the sound so huge and heavy. If these guys come to your town, you'd be crazy to miss the best show of the summer.

    Slash +Myles Kennedy = AMAZING

by RuRockin on 8/30/10The Warfield - San Francisco

Slash was at the top of his game. He played a perfect show. His pretty much makes love to his guitar, with amazing extended solos and a few other surprises. Myles Kennedy is a great singer. Who needs Axl? Who needs Scott? He sang through old GnR and Velvet Revolver classics better then the originals. Great original stuff from Slash's solo album and maybe a lil Snakepit as well. GnR classics included Civil War, Rocket Queen, Sweet Child o Mine, Paradise City, and Nighttrain. Velvet Revolver classics included Slither and Fall To Pieces. A beautiful rendition of Starlight, Watch this, and about 4-5 others from solo album. Mid Show, Slash played a 20 minutes blues jam. He played so hard, two guitar strings broke at about 15 minutes which just blew me away. Never heard him play blues before, and I tell ya, he has a back up job if he needs it. Myles vocals are very powerful, and you really need to check this guy out. The band was awesome too. We has some bonus Zeppelin cover with Communication Breakdown and a lil Hendrix inspired national anthem bonus as well. The highlight was watching Slash play his guitar solo behind his head perfectly. The opening act was enthusiastic. I'm gonna be positive for them. They need more rehearsal, but they were only on for about 1/2 hour, so no biggie.

This show is a must see for any Slash fan. the band was very tight. Myles Kennedy's vocals were incredible. the show ran the gamut of Slash's career. they covered a bit of everything from Guns, to Slash's Snakepit, Velvet Revolevr and of course the current solo effort and Kennedy delivered on everything. Slash sounded awesome and his playing was on fire. they even did a zeppelin cover in the encore, Communication Breakdown.

My ears are still ringing...but it's worth it.!

by Stubrew on 8/30/10The Warfield - San Francisco

it was great to see Slash in a small theater like the Warfield. Watching him play is so much fun. I think everyone in the house could actually see his fingers. It was LOUD! it's the next morning and I still can't hear fully and my ears are still ringing. The show was recorded Live and immediately available for sale. I haven't bought it yet, but it should be interesting to see how it turned out...
