SLASH featuring Myles Kennedy & the Conspirators on Tour

“I think it’s time to set this world on fire/I think it’s time to push it to the edge/I’m so f---in’ bored so trip the wire/It may never be this good again”

--From the opening power chords of the single and title track of WORLD ON FIRE

WORLD ON FIRE is the new album from SLASH featuring Myles Kennedy & the Conspirators, and it comes on full throttle and in-your-face, a hunk of burning rock ‘n’ roll that takes no prisoners. Intensifying the band’s sound and vision, it marks the follow-up to their succesful and acclaimed 2012 debut, Apocalyptic Love, also released on SLASH’s own indie Dik Hayd International label distributed through Caroline.

“We’ve been playing together for awhile and I think it’s gotten to the point where everybody’s comfortable in our own skins,” says Rock and Roll Hall of Fame guitarist SLASH, who has amassed album sales of over 100 million copies, with seven GRAMMY nominations, a GRAMMY award and countless accolades. “It turned out to be a very easy process. We definitely had chemistry from the very first time we entered a room together. It was instantaneous magic.”

WORLD ON FIRE represents that chemistry, as SLASH, vocalist MYLES KENNEDY, bassist TODD KERNS and drummer BRENT FITZ blaze through 17 songs that run the gamut of topics, some derived from tour bus conversations between the singer and guitarist. These range from the pointed sexual politics of “Battleground,” “Dirty Girl” and “Stone Blind,” the anti-war sentiments of “Dissident” and the coming-of-age saga “Bent to Fly,” to such charged issues as elephant poaching (“Beneath the Savage Sun”), child abuse in the Catholic Church (“The Unholy”), addiction (“Wicked Stone”) and the perils faced by females of a certain age in show business (“Withered Delilah”). There’s also a song inspired by Mad Men’s Don Draper (“Shadow Life”) and a rockin’ instrumental (“Safari Inn”).

“There are lots of different stories and themes on this album,” says KENNEDY, the vocalist for Alter Bridge who first played on SLASH’s self-titled 2010 debut solo release, and became an instant fit. “When SLASH sends me a chord progression or a riff, it’s like hearing music to a film. Ultimately, I am writing the script for the composition with lyrics and melodies inspired by what he sends me musically. I do my best to keep the story congruent with the mood of the track."

Unlike Apocalyptic Love, which was essentially recorded live in the studio, WORLD ON FIRE began with jamming by SLASH, KERNS and FITZ, who sent the results to KENNEDY. Produced by Mike “Elvis” Baskette (Alter Bridge, Falling in Reverse, Incubus, Iggy Pop, Chevelle) in his Orlando-based Studio Barbarossa and at L.A.’s NRG Studios, WORLD ON FIRE finds SLASH playing all the guitars this time around.

Make no mistake about it, though. This is no solo project, but a rock ‘n’ roll band, with all four members contributing their strengths to the whole.

“I was influenced by the group ethic as a kid coming up,” admits SLASH. “I would buy live records because that was the energy I craved. As soon as I picked up a guitar in junior high school, I started a band. That’s the vibe I’m looking for, the interaction between musicians. Having a singer whom I know where he’s at, and writing with him in mind, my songwriting skills have gotten a lot better.”

Those arrangements range from the acoustic strumming and “la la la” chorus of “Battleground” and the epic build of “Bent to Fly” to the distinctive SLASH guitar riff which opens “Iris of the Storm,” the wide-screen scope of “The Unholy,” with its sounds of children in the playground, and the jungle boogie instrumental of “Safari Inn.”

“I’ve learned a great deal through the whole process,” says KENNEDY, who splits his time between The Conspirators and Alter Bridge. ““Everybody’s on the same page and we’re all very proud of what we’ve done as a band on this record. There's a great chemistry between the 4 of us that continues to evolve with each recording.”

WORLD ON FIRE comes on the heels of the success of Apocalyptic Love, which debuted at #4 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart and produced SLASH’s first-ever No. 1 U.S. Rock radio solo hits in “You’re a Lie” and “Standing in the Sun.” With the release of Nothing Left to Fear last year--SLASH’s initial foray into horror pictures, co-produced by his Slasher Films--he began to broaden his horizons, a development which could be heard on WORLD ON FIRE, particularly on the very cinematic set-piece, “The Unholy.”

“That comes from an entirely different side of my brain,” SLASH admits. “I never usually write like that for a band, but I thought it would be pretty cool.”

KENNEDY, who comes from a Christian Scientist and Methodist background, based the song on what he was hearing from Catholic friends. “It’s not as silent as it once was,” he says of the institutionalized child abuse he tackles in the lyrics. “It’s really sad and heartbreaking because these are people you look up to, clergymen, who betray that trust.”

The lyrics of “Shadow Life” come from Kennedy’s fascination with the TV show “Mad Men” and the duplicity of its main character Don Draper. “That character fascinates me because the dark secrets he keeps, as well as the double life he leads, ultimately make his existence more complex and difficult."

“The Dissident” is about a soldier who comes to the realization that he no longer believes in what he is fighting for, while “Withered Delilah” gets inside how the entertainment industry can chew up and spit out women when they no longer have a use for them.

“This is basically a happy record with some dark subject matter,” acknowledges SLASH. “It ends up in a positive place, but it also leaves you with the idea not to get too comfortable.”

For SLASH featuring Myles Kennedy and The Conspirators, there is no time for that, as the band will intersperse their own headlining dates by appearing with Aerosmith on the celebrated “Let Rock Rule” tour in North America this summer, a jaunt they previewed with a surprise performance at the Whisky a Go Go earlier this spring.

“I’m really excited about it,” says SLASH. “There are not really too many bands I can feel comfortable partnering up with. When I first picked up the guitar, they were a huge influence my favorite band at the time, bar none. The Rocks album was a catalyst for me to pursue what it is I do now. Guns N’ Roses toured with them in the ‘80s. They always represented a certain kind of attitude, brashness and realism in rock ‘n’ roll I still to this day subscribe to.  We fit together really well.”

I was not quite sure what to expect but the show was fantastic. A true professional at the top of his game, Slash played clean and showed himself to be a top musician of any genre. As for the Guns n' Roses past, I like Axl as a musician and songwriter but as a performer, I thought Myles Kennedy was superior -- I might even say that he did Axl better than Axl. I couldn't ask for more of the group that Slash has built, they had a tremendous rapport with each other and showed respect for the audience, started on time, and played for 2+ hours without a break. I wish that I could see a band of this caliber play every day. A little about me... I'm a big heavy metal fan -- I've been a G'N'R fanatic since the 80's -- but also a fan of music in general, middle aged, as comfortable at the symphony or opera as I am at a metal show -- I know that there are others like me out there. Favorite moment: Slash did a blues number that was fantastic. I wouldn't trade the set list for anything but if I ran into him playing at the best blues clubs of the world, I'd equally be in heaven.

  • The best show ever & I've been to many!

    by 1234Stephen1234 on 9/21/10Center Stage - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

Slash with Myles Kennedy is better than G&R. We drove from Birmingham to ATL last night to see them. Myles sings so much better than Axel Rose, I would not have believed it if I had not seen them both. It’s a 5 star show. Slash handed my son his pick while he was playing, he will remember that for the rest of his life. I can’t wait to see them again.

  • Up close and personal

If you appreciate Rock N Roll music and talent then you MUST SEE SLASH!! He hasn't lost a step. If anything he has only gotten better. You will have the privelge to witness a Rock Legend that still has the enthusiasm of an 18 year old. You will get your moneys worth. Now that he is hitting smaller venues, fans have the ability to have an up close and personal experience with Slash. His touring band is nothing less than phenomenal. At some point in the show you may even find yourseld asking "hey, who was the original singer of Guns and Roses'. Myles is amazing as well as the entire band! One of the best concerts I have seen in my life and the entire band obviously APPRECIATES their doting fans. (Merch was pricy though)

Excellent show. I knew Slash would be amazing as always, but the whole band was fantastic. Myles Kennedy has such an awesome voice. He did a great job with the Guns and Roses songs.

  • The Man!!!

The show was top notch!! The Norva in Norfolk, VA always has great shows, atmosphere, and just a down-right awesome venue. Add Slash to that and it was over the top! Everyone I seen was having a good time and Slash didn't disappoint anyone with his great performance. Myles Kennedy is a perfect fit for his older and new music!!

Slash is the best guitar player that I've ever seen live and that list includes some very notable names.

  • Slash was on his game!!

by kjeu on 9/20/10The Norva - NorfolkRating: 5 out of 5

This was the first time to see Slash and could have not been a better place to see a performer. With a big name like Slash I was surprised to see him play in such a small venue. I would rather see all my concerts this way! Got to see him and his band come in off the tour bus, stood 10feet away while the band played and got to see him after the concert to sign his CD cover. My wife and I had a Rockin time! As Slash says, Rockin Fuckin Roll!!! Keep the big names coming!!!

  • Slash is the Man

Go see Slash. He is a great rock guitarist. The show was filled with songs you want to hear again.

  • Slash - Hard Rock Perfection

by rockus on 9/20/10The Norva - NorfolkRating: 5 out of 5

This show was effing fantastic - Slash's guitar performance was the best I've ever seen - each song was performed with tremendous energy and technical brilliance - it was quite simply, perfect. He did not miss a single intricate nor hard-ass note. The other musicians were equal to the task and Myles Kennedy's singing style and ability also seemed to be a perfect match. I like this band and hope they stay together and hope they play the NORVA again soon. The Norva is awesome because of its intimate setting but I wish they could find a way to improve the sound quality in there.

  • Possibly the best show I've ever seen!!

    by Metalhour on 9/20/10Terminal 5 - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

Slash has clearly been around the block as far as concerts go. The whole band was amazing, especially Myles Kennedy and Slash himself. Just a phenomenal show, sold out, rocked, and I could tell everyone had a great time.

  • Slash at NORVA with Taddy Porter

by FLoridaRFNR on 9/20/10The Norva - NorfolkRating: 5 out of 5

Norva is a small venue with seating for about 100 in balcony rail area - the other fans filled the floor of this old brick building to see Slash hammer out about 16 new and classic songs, with Myles Kennedy wiping away everyones memory of that GNR frontman. Civil War, Back from Cali, and Mean Bone blew everyone away. Brent Fitz was spectacular on drums. The opening act - TADDY PORTER - from Oklahoma tore through a setlist of about 8 original songs and these guys really know how to rock! Got their drumsticks/CDs and shirts after the show, and they are a class act - They sound a little like "Silvertide" 'aint coming home'. Bottom line _ GO SEE SLASH AND TADDY PORTER! Both have fantastic CDs out, if you can't make the concert. MG

  • a "must see" for rockers of all ages

by URADUMPLIN on 9/20/10The Norva - NorfolkRating: 5 out of 5

Rockers who know Slash"s music will not be disappointed in this concert. He includes music from Guns N Roses days, Velvet Revolver and his latest solo album. It was a sold out concert and he left us wanting more after 2 plus hours of play. If you have the opportunity to go, you owe it to yourself to go!

  • by Anonymous on 9/20/10The Norva - NorfolkRating: 5 out of 5

Slash was great. Its easy to forget how many iconic guitar riffs he has created over the years. and myles kenned singing leaves no one wishing for axel.

  • by Anonymous on 9/20/10The Norva - NorfolkRating: 5 out of 5

It's SLASH! AWESOME! Fun environment! Just wish he was in DC.

  • Slash rocked!

    by Slasher10 on 9/20/10The Norva - NorfolkRating: 5 out of 5

I drove from FL to see show, but I'm from Va Beach, and my Mom lives there, so it was perfect. Got in earlier than others to show and got up right in front of stage. A lot of fun and good crowd. Loved seeing Slash again, haven't seen him since 1989 with Guns. Wanted to stay after show to see if he came out to sign stuff, but only waited about 30 minutes. Does anybody know if he ever came out? He is hands down one of the best guitarist of our time.
