SLASH featuring Myles Kennedy & the Conspirators on Tour

“I think it’s time to set this world on fire/I think it’s time to push it to the edge/I’m so f---in’ bored so trip the wire/It may never be this good again”

--From the opening power chords of the single and title track of WORLD ON FIRE

WORLD ON FIRE is the new album from SLASH featuring Myles Kennedy & the Conspirators, and it comes on full throttle and in-your-face, a hunk of burning rock ‘n’ roll that takes no prisoners. Intensifying the band’s sound and vision, it marks the follow-up to their succesful and acclaimed 2012 debut, Apocalyptic Love, also released on SLASH’s own indie Dik Hayd International label distributed through Caroline.

“We’ve been playing together for awhile and I think it’s gotten to the point where everybody’s comfortable in our own skins,” says Rock and Roll Hall of Fame guitarist SLASH, who has amassed album sales of over 100 million copies, with seven GRAMMY nominations, a GRAMMY award and countless accolades. “It turned out to be a very easy process. We definitely had chemistry from the very first time we entered a room together. It was instantaneous magic.”

WORLD ON FIRE represents that chemistry, as SLASH, vocalist MYLES KENNEDY, bassist TODD KERNS and drummer BRENT FITZ blaze through 17 songs that run the gamut of topics, some derived from tour bus conversations between the singer and guitarist. These range from the pointed sexual politics of “Battleground,” “Dirty Girl” and “Stone Blind,” the anti-war sentiments of “Dissident” and the coming-of-age saga “Bent to Fly,” to such charged issues as elephant poaching (“Beneath the Savage Sun”), child abuse in the Catholic Church (“The Unholy”), addiction (“Wicked Stone”) and the perils faced by females of a certain age in show business (“Withered Delilah”). There’s also a song inspired by Mad Men’s Don Draper (“Shadow Life”) and a rockin’ instrumental (“Safari Inn”).

“There are lots of different stories and themes on this album,” says KENNEDY, the vocalist for Alter Bridge who first played on SLASH’s self-titled 2010 debut solo release, and became an instant fit. “When SLASH sends me a chord progression or a riff, it’s like hearing music to a film. Ultimately, I am writing the script for the composition with lyrics and melodies inspired by what he sends me musically. I do my best to keep the story congruent with the mood of the track."

Unlike Apocalyptic Love, which was essentially recorded live in the studio, WORLD ON FIRE began with jamming by SLASH, KERNS and FITZ, who sent the results to KENNEDY. Produced by Mike “Elvis” Baskette (Alter Bridge, Falling in Reverse, Incubus, Iggy Pop, Chevelle) in his Orlando-based Studio Barbarossa and at L.A.’s NRG Studios, WORLD ON FIRE finds SLASH playing all the guitars this time around.

Make no mistake about it, though. This is no solo project, but a rock ‘n’ roll band, with all four members contributing their strengths to the whole.

“I was influenced by the group ethic as a kid coming up,” admits SLASH. “I would buy live records because that was the energy I craved. As soon as I picked up a guitar in junior high school, I started a band. That’s the vibe I’m looking for, the interaction between musicians. Having a singer whom I know where he’s at, and writing with him in mind, my songwriting skills have gotten a lot better.”

Those arrangements range from the acoustic strumming and “la la la” chorus of “Battleground” and the epic build of “Bent to Fly” to the distinctive SLASH guitar riff which opens “Iris of the Storm,” the wide-screen scope of “The Unholy,” with its sounds of children in the playground, and the jungle boogie instrumental of “Safari Inn.”

“I’ve learned a great deal through the whole process,” says KENNEDY, who splits his time between The Conspirators and Alter Bridge. ““Everybody’s on the same page and we’re all very proud of what we’ve done as a band on this record. There's a great chemistry between the 4 of us that continues to evolve with each recording.”

WORLD ON FIRE comes on the heels of the success of Apocalyptic Love, which debuted at #4 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart and produced SLASH’s first-ever No. 1 U.S. Rock radio solo hits in “You’re a Lie” and “Standing in the Sun.” With the release of Nothing Left to Fear last year--SLASH’s initial foray into horror pictures, co-produced by his Slasher Films--he began to broaden his horizons, a development which could be heard on WORLD ON FIRE, particularly on the very cinematic set-piece, “The Unholy.”

“That comes from an entirely different side of my brain,” SLASH admits. “I never usually write like that for a band, but I thought it would be pretty cool.”

KENNEDY, who comes from a Christian Scientist and Methodist background, based the song on what he was hearing from Catholic friends. “It’s not as silent as it once was,” he says of the institutionalized child abuse he tackles in the lyrics. “It’s really sad and heartbreaking because these are people you look up to, clergymen, who betray that trust.”

The lyrics of “Shadow Life” come from Kennedy’s fascination with the TV show “Mad Men” and the duplicity of its main character Don Draper. “That character fascinates me because the dark secrets he keeps, as well as the double life he leads, ultimately make his existence more complex and difficult."

“The Dissident” is about a soldier who comes to the realization that he no longer believes in what he is fighting for, while “Withered Delilah” gets inside how the entertainment industry can chew up and spit out women when they no longer have a use for them.

“This is basically a happy record with some dark subject matter,” acknowledges SLASH. “It ends up in a positive place, but it also leaves you with the idea not to get too comfortable.”

For SLASH featuring Myles Kennedy and The Conspirators, there is no time for that, as the band will intersperse their own headlining dates by appearing with Aerosmith on the celebrated “Let Rock Rule” tour in North America this summer, a jaunt they previewed with a surprise performance at the Whisky a Go Go earlier this spring.

“I’m really excited about it,” says SLASH. “There are not really too many bands I can feel comfortable partnering up with. When I first picked up the guitar, they were a huge influence my favorite band at the time, bar none. The Rocks album was a catalyst for me to pursue what it is I do now. Guns N’ Roses toured with them in the ‘80s. They always represented a certain kind of attitude, brashness and realism in rock ‘n’ roll I still to this day subscribe to.  We fit together really well.”

Great show, Slash is a tremendous guitar player, and the set list was an interesting mix of G&R, Velvet Revolver, his own solo stuff, and even Alter Bridge.

  • Slash still Slashing away

by BigShow on 9/22/10Center Stage Theatre - AtlantaRating: 4 out of 5

Starting his career in the mid eighties, becoming famous basically over night, doing every drug under the sun, losing bands and starting new ones, almost dying from heart complications and having a pace maker installed... and he still seems like a 22 year old on stage. Saul Hudson (aka Slash, guitarist from Guns N' Roses, Velvet Revolver, Slash's Snakepit) just recently put out a solo album with a compilation of singers and is now on tour. He blasted on stage with "Ghost," the first single from his self-titled disc and that was almost the only one from his latest project. The night was filled GNR hits like "Nightrain," "Civil War," (which was pretty surprising) and "Rocket Queen." Not to mention he threw some little known SS tunes and a few VR hits in the mix from the first album and none from that sophomore disappointment, Libertad. They played more songs from his other bands than they did from his new album which must have been taxing on Myles Kennedy, the vocalist on tour that recorded with Slash on two songs from the disc; "Back From Cali" and the semi-ballad "Starlight," both of which they performed. Slash, as usual, was adorned in dark pants, black muscle shirt, black and white Converse canvas sneakers, and of course, his trade-mark top hat which he some how stole from a leather shop in the early GNR days. It really seemed like he hadn't aged a day, especially watching him strut rapidly around on stage while jamming flawlessly on his Gibson Les Paul. Much to my chagrin, he did include "Sweet Child O' Mine" and "Paradise City" in the set list. I've seen him 5 other times with SS and VR and he never lowered himself to perform those overplayed, now redneck anthems. He, himself, has said that he could go the rest of his life without playing them, but I guess you gotta give the drunken, mindless masses what they want. Luckily, "My Michelle" and "By the Sword" made the encore and VR's "Slither" sent us all home smiling.

  • Slash and Myles were AMAZING

This was by far the best show i've ever been to. The talent was incredible and Slash has never been better. It ruined me for all other concerts!!!!

  • Slash with Myles Kennedy/Fav Concert Ever

    by StillRockinat47 on 9/22/10Center Stage Theatre - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

I am a staunch Myles Kennedy Fan since his work with AlterBridge. Honestly, I came to the concert to see him in person. He didn't disappoint me, that's for sure. I have always liked Slash, and I am impressed to see that he can still rock as hard today as he did in his early years. I recommend this concert to anyone who can get a ticket. Myles, I'm looking forward to ABIII. But, I am so glad I saw this concert. You gave a "voice" to Slash's guitar work that many of us have never heard.

  • Awesome

    by tb89 on 9/22/10Center Stage Theatre - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

Best show I've been to. Far surpassed any Velvet Revolver show. Opening act was actually really good, but Slash and Miles Kennedy tore it up. Played several GNR songs such as Night Train, Sweet Child of Mine, Paradise City, My Michelle, etc. I would pay way more than $31.50 to go see this show.

  • Do NOT miss Slash on this tour!

by YeahCmon on 9/22/10Center Stage Theatre - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

Slash was amazing for this sold out show! The whole show was very energetic from start to finish! Slash's guitar work was flawless as always. He really interacted with the audience as well. Myles Kennedy, who sang for Slash, nailed every song with perfection. The setlist included very evenly matched songs from Slash's solo stuff, GnR and even Velvet Revolver. The band gelled great overall. This show was worth every penny I spent for the ticket.

  • Slash and Myles were MASSIVE

Excellent show. Everyone needs to see great musicians in smaller venues. Spectacular show. Slash is getting better with age guys, go and check him out.

  • Slash & Band kicked ass

    by Audio60 on 9/22/10Center Stage Theatre - AtlantaRating: 4 out of 5

Slash and his band were fantastic. One of the best shows I've been to in years. The audience loved them. Center Stage Theatre is a room you can see and hear from anywhere. The sound engineer did a great job handling the inadequate house sound system. The house sound system cannot handle rock and roll bands of this caliber. As a former production manager & sound engineer for Guns N' Roses,it is the very weak point of this venue.

  • Wow, what a concert!!!!

    by sweets31272 on 9/22/10Center Stage Theatre - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

The concert was fantastic. Slash kicked butt!!!!! Miles Kennedy is a great front man. The venue was terrific. Any seat would have been awesome. Thanks for a great night Slash and Center Stage!!!!

  • by Anonymous on 9/22/10Center Stage Theatre - AtlantaRating: 4 out of 5

Good show! Myles Kennedy did a great job with vocals, and of course Slash did a great job on guitar. They played a nice mix of new, old, Gun's n Roses, and Alter Bridge.

  • Slash was Amazing!

Absolutely had a great time. Slash was incredible. Myles Kennedy did a fantastic job. The Godfather theme song was beyond memorable...all in all an amazing time!

  • Slash was AMAZING!

by lumpdoodle on 9/22/10Center Stage Theatre - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

Best concert ever! Slash was accessible, meeting fans and signing autographs. Myles Kennedy was perfect, as was to rest of the group. The opening act, Toddy Port, was fantastic and the bassist, Kevin Jones, was unforgettable.

  • The Best Show Period!

by kfromtheshore on 9/22/10The Norva - NorfolkRating: 5 out of 5

The show was packed at the Norva in Norfolk. The opening band Taddy Porter were flat out amazing. A great rock sound in today's pop enviroment. As far a Slash is concered he is one of the best musicians I have ever seen. His new album is a must buy. Myles Kennedy was flat out brialliant in his singing and covering past covers of GnR and Velvet Revolver tunes. If there is anyway possible go check out Slash and the band he has put together for this tour. It is the best show I have seen in years. Enough Said!!

  • If Slash wasnt there we would have left

by WendyDisappointedBySlash on 9/21/10The Norva - NorfolkRating: 1 out of 5

My boyfriend and I have been fans of Slash since I can remember. We found out last minute that he was on tour 200 miles from where we live, so we bought 2 tickets and a hotel room for the night. When we got there we were so unimpressed it was painful to not leave. Myles Kennedy is a mediocre singer at best, then Todd Kerns the bass player decided to sing (terribly) a horrible song called "Were All Gonna Die" and that was absolutely unbearable. Then to top it all off Slash couldn't play one song without messing up. If I only knew then what I know now I would not have spent the time or money to ruin the image that I had held onto for so long of my childhood hero :..(

  • Slash was AMAZING!!!!

    by Kyle245 on 9/21/10Ogden Theatre - DenverRating: 5 out of 5

Slash showed how a rock and roll concert is done! Him and Myles Kennedy on lead vocals played a straight rock n roll show! It was a show of great music and overall a great, clean show! The audience had great energy and there were hardly any disputes in the crowd. Slash played many of the songs on his new album and even included a lot of Guns N Roses covers and some songs from Slash's Snakepit. Bumblefoot and the new Guns N Roses got nothing on the energy, show quality and over all music that Slash had played!
