Sister Act on Tour
Crime meets Catholicism in this boisterous and soulful musical adaptation of the 1992 film in which Whoopi Goldberg starred as a nun on the run. Revised in 2019 to feature a more mature lead character, the reborn Sister Act will have audiences alternating cries of "Hail Mary!" and "Hallelujah!"
With music by Alan Menken and lyrics by Glenn Slater, Sister Act had its Broadway premiere in 2011. The show earned five Tony Award nominations, including Best Musical and Best Actress in a Musical (Patina Miller), and ran for 561 performances. In late 2019 it was announced that Whoopi Goldberg would assume the lead role of disco diva Deloris Van Cartier in 2020 for a limited number of London performances. Goldberg also announced that Brenda Edwards would go on tour in the role of Deloris as rewritten for an older actor. Edwards, as it happened, had been rejected for the same role after auditioning for the original West End premiere of the musical more than a decade earlier. She has appeared previously in We Will Rock You, Chicago and Carousel.
Sister Act Background
A habit becomes a hideout when nightclub singer Deloris Van Cartier enters a unique witness protection program after seeing her gangster boyfriend commit a murder. Composer Alan Menken and lyricist Glenn Slater's songs pay affectionate and witty tribute to the sounds of the '60s and '70s, and the heroine's monastic retreat among The Holy Order of the Little Sisters of Our Mother of Perpetual Faith provides numerous opportunities for tuneful confessions that scamper between Motown, Philly soul, funk, disco and steamy R&B. After struggling to fit into the order, Deloris finally finds her true place in its choir.
Reviewing Sister Act's Broadway premiere, the New York Post's Elisabeth Vincentelli wrote, "Big, glitzy numbers are the toast of Broadway musicals. The only thing better? Big, glitzy numbers...with nuns!" The musical has also inspired a somewhat surreal side project: nearly 1,000 people donned habits in 2009 for the first annual Sister Act Nuns Run, which earned approximately £30,000 for charity.
One enjoyable show, it went by so fast. Very entertaining.
The energy level was awesome, the music upbeat and really moving, the whole thing deliciously cheesy and super fun. It is a little different than the movie, so don't go expecting the same thing. But do go expecting to have a good time and leave smiling and energized.
Very well put together, casting was excellent, loved the crowd, and the costumes were to die for. I wish the VIP greeters had information on how to join VIP and that the bar had a little better selection of White wine (it appears I'm allergic to very dry pinot grigio).
It was great. Whoppie Goldberg look out. Acting was great. Would like to see it again. Music was also very good. I also like the Oprea House. A definate must see this seson. Kixk back and ENJOY!!!
Hysterical! We loved the humor and how every character had the chance to be the star and all were so talented and funny. No music from the original movie and a bit different storyline but we absolutely loved it! So did our 11 & 12 year old kids!
Good experience. I watched this with my wife. Although we are not good for English, we enjoyed it and moved. Movie was very helpful for understanding it. I will recommend it for Japanese friends.
I truly enjoyed myself!! I saw this play in NYC and was up dancing in front of my seat at the end of the show. So when I heard the show would be playing in Florida I had to see it again!! I was pleased to enjoy the same quality show as I once seen. I even recognized some of the same actors from broadway!! A must see!!
I loved every minute of the performance! Great seats!
Sister Act was super witty and hilarious! And the costumes were fantastic. 5 stars for sure!
Everything about this musical was top notch! The sets, music, & talent of the actors/actresses was exemplary. The entire production was professional & thoroughly enjoyable. It was well worth the price & I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to friends & family!
I was unsure of the show when I noticed that there were no songs I knew from the movie. That did not matter at all. This presentation met and exceeded my expectations. Way To Go!!!!!!
would loved to hear at least one song from the original movie the costumes and performers were fabolous and so talanted but story line lost something in translation loved the original music and since Whoopie has some doings into this production expected at least one origainal song but lost that also
What a fun show! Not a weak link in the whole production. Great songs, glitzy costumes, and great voices. Loved the 3 gangster guys' song and dance - very funny! Go see it!
Awesome play. Funny parts. BUT, they did NoT play the theme song of "I will follow him!" It needed that to make it great!
I have been to many musicals and this was definately one of the best. The cast did a fantastic job and I left the theatre feeling wonderful. Definately a must see !
It was one of the best. We wanted to go and see it again the next day. We loved it.
I slept through the first part. Was a little slow but I liked how it was geared to Philadelphia. 2nd half was much better. Kept my interest with a little twist.
Glad we attended. Totally enjoyed the show. We Loved the laughs and everything else :)
Truely a great show and performance. The music was great. The singing superb, there were some great voices.
Sister Act was a delightful romp. The laugh provoking moments came fast and furiously, but gave way to moments of reflection and genuine caring. The cast was wonderful. The voices were all "in character"; the dancing quite apropos and the technical staff gave me thrills and chills. The Mother Superior's timing was marvelous (her takes added so much to the overall experience). This was just the kind of evening to let one laugh and have fun.
