Sister Act on Tour

Crime meets Catholicism in this boisterous and soulful musical adaptation of the 1992 film in which Whoopi Goldberg starred as a nun on the run. Revised in 2019 to feature a more mature lead character, the reborn Sister Act will have audiences alternating cries of "Hail Mary!" and "Hallelujah!"

With music by Alan Menken and lyrics by Glenn Slater, Sister Act had its Broadway premiere in 2011. The show earned five Tony Award nominations, including Best Musical and Best Actress in a Musical (Patina Miller), and ran for 561 performances. In late 2019 it was announced that Whoopi Goldberg would assume the lead role of disco diva Deloris Van Cartier in 2020 for a limited number of London performances. Goldberg also announced that Brenda Edwards would go on tour in the role of Deloris as rewritten for an older actor. Edwards, as it happened, had been rejected for the same role after auditioning for the original West End premiere of the musical more than a decade earlier. She has appeared previously in We Will Rock You, Chicago and Carousel.

Sister Act Background

A habit becomes a hideout when nightclub singer Deloris Van Cartier enters a unique witness protection program after seeing her gangster boyfriend commit a murder. Composer Alan Menken and lyricist Glenn Slater's songs pay affectionate and witty tribute to the sounds of the '60s and '70s, and the heroine's monastic retreat among The Holy Order of the Little Sisters of Our Mother of Perpetual Faith provides numerous opportunities for tuneful confessions that scamper between Motown, Philly soul, funk, disco and steamy R&B. After struggling to fit into the order, Deloris finally finds her true place in its choir.

Reviewing Sister Act's Broadway premiere, the New York Post's Elisabeth Vincentelli wrote, "Big, glitzy numbers are the toast of Broadway musicals. The only thing better? Big, glitzy numbers...with nuns!" The musical has also inspired a somewhat surreal side project: nearly 1,000 people donned habits in 2009 for the first annual Sister Act Nuns Run, which earned approximately £30,000 for charity.

A wonderful show for the Christmas time, the actors had a lot of energy and talent. Loved the priest, I am a christian and believe we need to celebrate God and what he has done for us and this show did all that.

I went with 2 of my friends and we all thoroughly enjoyed it. The music was great and the dancing fantastic! I loved the costuming and the lights and it was so up beat and fun to watch. We couldn't help clapping along and we were on the top balcony. It would have been amazing in closer seats!

    Sister Act redo

by Danjpo on 11/26/14Broome County Forum - Binghamton

Although the show was great, there wasn't one original song! I really missed that! The acoustics were horrible - could hardly here the words! I would rate the show a 4 if it wasn't for that!

    Not what I expected

Hard to understand the dialog and lyrics. Partly because of speed of speech and the orchestra was often too LOUD!

Sister Act Needs a Little Prayer

by housegal49 on 11/26/14Broome County Forum - Binghamton

My friend had never seen the movie and relied upon me for this recommendation. Overall, the acting was terrific, the music rousing and a joyful experience. I can never understand, however, why it is felt that inserting swear words or using God's name in vain is necessary. For me, what should have been family friendly was just like any other present day entertainment. You want to stand out and not have parents or granny cringe? Leave our the "damn" and "Jesus friggin Christ". They took away from the love I have for this story and nothing would have been lost, but everything to gain, by leaving them out.

    Sister Act (touring)

by Manya101 on 11/25/14Scranton Cultural Center - Scranton

I purchased these for my daughter and grandaughter and myself. Both my daughter and grandaughter saw this on Broadway in NYC and it was their favorite. Imagine my disappointment when each of them said that the performance in Scranton was substandard compared to the Broadway act. The main character had a fill in performer on the opening show!! My grandaughter was hugely disappointed in that as she did much research on the performer who was scheduled to perform the lead. (Sister Mary Clair). The stand in just didn't "own the part" and her vocal range left much to be desired for this caliber of show. The costuming on the other hand was wonderful and as a group, the choral aspect was beautiful. The performer who played the heavyset -silly and naive role was fantastic. She was by far the best performer of the lot, really loving her role and it came across!!!

Sister Act was fun to watch

by trellisgarden on 11/23/14The Oncenter Crouse Hinds Theater - Syracuse

Acting and music was good but vocals were over powered by the music. The volume balance was off making some of the story lines of the songs lose their impact. Sets worked visually with flow of the play.
