    Wonderful experience

by ncikk on 2/19/14Shedd Aquarium - Chicago

The passes included everything else there is to do in the aquarium ontop of the Behind The Scenes tour. The tour is alot like a field trip. You get to learn about how the aquarium is run on a day to day basis. It is very interesting and I would recommend it to anyone.

    Disappointing

by Anonymous on 2/18/14Shedd Aquarium - Chicago

You get to look through windows at a vet table, they explain water filtration systems, and a little of what they feed the animals. You may get to see some turtles and fish in some cement tanks. Not worth the extra money. The aquarium itself was wonderful.

It was more of a facilities tour than a tour of the animals, but still interesting.

Shedd Aquarium Behind the Scenes Tours

    by pianist1960 on 8/26/13Shedd Aquarium - Chicago

Our guide was excellent. We appreciated her enthusiasm. This was the second time my granddaughter went. She had gone last year and liked it so much that she requested to go again! Because she was so excited telling about her last year's experiences, her ten year old brother and his friend asked if they could go this year (We went the first week of August). Their brother who is 7 1/2 also wanted to do the Tour, but the ticket information explicitly stated that any child attending must be at least ten years old and 55 inches tall. I explained the "rules" to him and he is now waiting until he is ten. This brings me to my major complaint about the tour on Aug. 21--I was very surprised to see that two small children were allowed on the tour and am questioning the Shedd's protocol. Are the rules outdated or is the Shedd choosing to bypass its own rules regarding age and height for the Behind the Scenes Tour?

    Behind the Scenes Tour

by Anonymous on 8/26/13Shedd Aquarium - Chicago

The tour was just what my grandchildren (10 and 12) needed to make the aquarium more than "just another aquarium." Seeing the special care given every creature, from habitat to food to water conditions made the exhibits much more interesting. The tour also fueled my granddaughter's burgeoning aspiration to be a marine biologist. My grandson, who had been bored to that point, enjoyed the tour very much.

    LOVE THE TURTLES!!

by JEHNEH on 8/24/13Shedd Aquarium - Chicago

My daughter and I loved the private tour. Karen was quite informative! All of the turtles were our favorite. We NEVER miss the aquarium when we visit Chicago.

    shedd behind scenes

    by 80mp on 8/16/13Shedd Aquarium - Chicago

The behind the scenes tour was not what I expected. It was really short, and there was so much background noise you could hardly hear. There was nothing going on and it should you empty rooms. The tour was not worth the money but the rest of the aquarium was great. I think everyone should take the chance to see Shedd just don't pay the extra for behind the scenes.

    Worth it!

I took my boyfriend to the Shedd for his birthday and we both really enjoyed it! The tour was great, worth the money

Not what I expected, but very historical

    by WhaleShark719 on 7/23/13Shedd Aquarium - Chicago

I expected this tour to be more behind the scenes of the animal exhibits. It was a lot about the water purification process. I found the parts about the history of the aquarium really interesting. And we did get to see a 500 pound catfish feed.

    Not for Children

by WickedAtPCC on 7/20/13Shedd Aquarium - Chicago

The tour was informative on the historical and day-to-day workings of the aquarium. However, we saw very little actual activities. Mostly we walked through empty rooms with an explanation of what activities would be performed in those rooms. I would recommend to adults who have an interest in gaining a broader understanding of the aquarium. My feeling is most children would not find it intersting.

Behind the scenes tour was excellent!

    by MikeH54 on 7/14/13Shedd Aquarium - Chicago

The aquatic show was very nice! There were dolphins, belugas and penguins. The stingray touch was very nice also! Very friendly and helpful staff. The parking price was a little high!

    by EGirls3 on 7/11/13Shedd Aquarium - Chicago

Behind the scenes taught myself and my girls so much about how the aquarium operates and we enjoyed it very much. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and quizzed us throughout the tour. Very nice!!

Could be better, much better ...

    by ShiftF9 on 7/10/13Shedd Aquarium - Chicago

The 1-hour tour spends 1/2 its time in the lab and hospital in the bowels of the aquarium -- probably only worth 5 minutes unless you're a real science nerd. The other half is spent up above the older part of the exhibits, with nothing terribly interesting to see. Got to see a tech chopping carrots for an iquana. Exciting. Expected to see a lot more behind the scenes, including some of the more interesting exhibits.

    Excellent tour

by Lurk on 7/10/13Shedd Aquarium - Chicago

The two young ladies that conducted the tour were very knowledgable and friendly. They made the tour both fun and educational. It lasted approx. 50 minutes, but the time really flew by. I definitely would recommend it.

A must do for anyone who is visiting for the first time ever or the first time in years. I took my boyfriend for his 35th birthday and we had sooo much fun and learned a lot. Hearing stories about the animals makes the trip so much more special!

It was an okay hour--oops 40 minutes!

by paliograndma on 5/27/13Shedd Aquarium - Chicago

It was interesting and the guide was lovely--pretty well informed. But with an 11 year old there was not much fun to see, a lot of talking and no great surprises behind the scenes.

    Lots of Insight

    by tb48 on 5/23/13Shedd Aquarium - Chicago

The tour was all I expected it to be. The guides were very knowledgeable and went out of their way to answer questions. The tour was very organized and the flow was very "natural". I especially liked seeing things from the back and getting information, and then going out front to actually see what we talked about from the display side. I was with some others from a down-state aquarium club and would like to visit some time with some of the specialist people on water purification and water chemistry; that sort of thing.

    Disappointed

by larrylew on 5/7/13Shedd Aquarium - Chicago

Have been on behind the scenes tours before a other venues, but overall, this was a disappointment. Seeing the labs was interesting, after that it was downhill. You could not take any pictures and there were no animals to touch.

    Not worth the extra money

by Anonymous on 4/29/13Shedd Aquarium - Chicago

We had thought that the behind the scenes was going to be a look into the care of the aquarium "tenants". We saw the lab, we saw the vet clinic but there was no one in these areas. So all we saw was equipment.

    Disappointed behind the scenes tour

    by AMP7 on 4/25/13Shedd Aquarium - Chicago

I love the Shedd Aquarium! My husband and I have been there many times. This was our second behind the scenes tour. I am said to say that the tour has dramatically decreased in its quality. On the old tour, you were able to go into the veterinarian area and see the animals being treated as well as feed the Asian carp. There were more areas where the group was taken behind the scenes as well. Now everything is shown to you on tv's and you are only allowed to look through the windows at certain areas. Most of the animals are now enclosed behind large barrier, making it difficult to see them and you can't feed any of them either. The tour guides are still great volunteers and are able to tell all of the facts about the Shedd. For first time Shedd goes it was also disappointing. We took my family for their first visit, the loved the aquarium itself, but they also found the tour lacking. I would say skip the tour and save your money for something else.
