    Sergio Mendes' music was wonderful

by Kirk on 7/11/09The Arena - Soboba Casino - San Jacinto

Nice balance of old classics from the '66 days and new cuts from recent albums. The 80's hits didn't resonate well because it is a different beat and did not seem to fit. The event location was intimate (sat in first row) but ghetto. Sergio is one of the great Brazilian jazz masters and that location was beneath him. Pachanga in Temecula is a first rate venue and would have been a superior choice. I grew up on his music and went through the trouble of importing his CD's from Japan before IPOD's were around. I will see him next time is comes out to CA. I also enjoyed seeing Klebber Jorge playing his beautiful guitar again since Roda Viva closed in Temecula. Put me on whatever list you offer to be sure that I don't miss Sergio Mendes' next tour.

Sergio Mendes was incredible at Soboba!!!!!!!

by Jillian123 on 7/11/09The Arena - Soboba Casino - San Jacinto

The drive from L.A. took little over an hour. The scenery around Soboba Casino is incredible. We were in the second row directly in front of Sergio. People were dancing in the aisles. Sergios was incredible - his girl singers were each beautiful and too precious for words. Loved watching their moves on stage. The percussionist/capoeira dancer was INCREDIBLE. The guest singers were great. Rapper H20 performed and was a lot of fun. The staging was beautiful. Sergio was so charming, and simply talent and perfection personified.

    Sergio still has it!!!!

by Denice on 7/11/09The Arena - Soboba Casino - San Jacinto

Sergio Mendes is the best. He can get everyone off their feet and have them dancing in the aisles. He has music for young and old. If anyone thought, "Why would I want to see an' old piano player?" You are passing up a very fun, enjoyable evening. Sergio has no age barrier. Don't sell him short. Give yourself a treat, run to the next Sergio Mendes concert.

    Sergio Mendes-Dreadful

by Jaytee on 7/10/09Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

What is Sergio thinking? I have seen him perform on several occassions, his shows have been impersonal, he rips through the songs showing now interset in the audience, and he thinks he has found the fountain of youth with h2o. This was my last Sergio concert! Both Eddie and Poncho were outstanding! Monte

    Poncho was amazing!

    by Bonita1 on 7/9/09Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

Poncho was amazing. We went to see him, but were disappointed that he wasn't given the play time that the other two artist had. His music was vibrant, but the crowd didn't seem to appreciate him too much. We will be seeing him at another venue soon.

Latin Jazz Greats at the Bowl

by robstermobster on 7/9/09Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

so you're not an aficionado of latin jazz? well, me neither. but last night's show certainly sparked my interest to dive a little deeper. sure i occasionally listen to the wave 94.7and kjazz 88.1, so i was familiar with the names. i read the itunes biographies, and i learned they have catalogs of music that span 4 decades. you may be surprised to learn their influences include antonio carlos jobim, joao gilberto, herbie hancock, thelonious monk & mccoy tyner - stellar company, indeed. the burning question became, "could these 3 artists and their bands live up to the implied promise?" all 3 bands impressed greatly with tight sets and fantastic arrangements. throughout the evening, i found myself thinking "this song washes over me so softly, so smoothly, i feel like a river rock that has been polished by gentle waters over eons of time". and "this is the perfect song for a swanky afternoon pool party". and "this other song is what you would hear from a parade float in rio or sao paulo" during carnaval. (shouldn't that really be spelled "CARNALval"?) so many members of the mixed crowd danced throughout the show, it seemed to fully demonstrate the international appeal and strong inclusiveness of latin jazz, afro-cuban bossa nova, and salsa y tropical musical stylings. 3 words sum up the evening: cheery, energetic and sexy! now more than ever, couldn't we all use more nights like that?

First time at Hollywood Bowl. Venue is great and Sergio Mendes, E. Palmieri and P. Sanchez were absolutely outstanding. Good mix of Afro-Cuban, Latin Jazz, BozaNova and Samba music...what else can you ask for? Overall outstanding concert.

    BOSSA- Yes ... RAP-No

    by DX7GUY on 7/9/09Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

RAP influences almost ruined a near perfect concert !!! Love Sergio's music ... but the very talented maestro might consider why Bossa Nova is so popular. For one, I find the blend of smooth rhythms, sophisticated harmonies, colorful costumes and sexy lyrics irresistible. And back in 1966, Brazilian music was a artistic relief from the grind of amateur rock musicianship and musical politics. But now in 2009, rap music sounds void of melody, the lyrics unintelligible and a performer in a tee-shirt and jeans look's out of place at a world class concert venue. I like the new CD (only rap song), but at a Sergio Mendes concert, I was hoping for colorful Brazilian carnival, not a down home rapper that appeared awkward against the sway of Bossa Nova.

great but why the hip hop artist?????

    by Jules79 on 7/9/09Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

great sound and performers - but was it really necessary to meddle the bossa nova classics from Sergio Mendes with a hip hop artist - that in my opinion sucked the marrow out of the show. Most likely an artist's decision, however that forced an early departure due to what amounted to musical blasphemy to my ears. I wish I was notified that the concert was going to feature a departure from the original scores.

    S. MENDEZ BROUGHT BACK MEMORIES

by LUAP on 7/9/09Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

I STILL COULDN'T GET OVER IT. I WAS JUST AWED BY THE LATEST PERFORMANCE OF SERGIO.THE RAP OF H2O THAT WENT WITH HIS STANDARD SONG ''MAS QUE NADA ''WAS JUST REFRESHING AND GAVE HIS PIECE A TWIST ,MAKING IT SOUND CONTEMPORARY ,AND APPEALING TO THE YOUNG ONCE. LEST WE FORGET THE EQUALLY EXCELLENT PERFORMANCES OF EDDIE PALMIERE WHO REINTRODUCED ME TO LATIN JAZZ AND PONCHO ALVAREZ WHO PLAYED MY FAVORITE SALSA PIECES....LOOKING FORWARD TO THEIR NEXT PERFORMANCE

    Sergio play yo piano!

by iggy on 7/9/09Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

It was a thrill to see Sergio, he is magnificent and legendary. I liked the ending with the brazilian dancers. I felt like I was in Brazil! Lighting and sound were very good. Thought he should have done an encore, seemed a bit short. Would have liked to see more dancing (samba and capoiera) . Overall it was a beautiful show. Suggestions for improvement: There are a lot of noisy audience members who can prevent people from hearing the show. Maybe ushers can keep an eye on rowdy audience members. We actually had to move seats. The jumbo screens are a bit small.

    Oh what a night

by Lolek on 7/9/09Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

What a way to kick off my summer concerts! First we were wowed by Poncho Sanchez and his amazing ensemble. Then the pleasure for our ears continued as Eddie Palmieri followed. Finally, Brazil's jewel, Sergio Mendes, brought everyone to their feet as he wrapped up the talent-filled event. Besides the amazing rhythm and sounds, what I loved the most was the harmony amongst the diversity in the crowd. As one of the benefits of living in L.A., I loved seeing how Latinos, Blacks, Whites, Asians, Middle-Eastern (and more...) delighted in the talent of these men and enjoyed a spectacular concert under the stars. Can't wait to go back.

    Totally amazing night

by Albita on 7/9/09Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

The full moon and the excellent weather were just the backdrop for a perfectly orchestrated and produced event. Pancho Sanchez was incredible, and I thought that Eddie Palmieri could not top him, but I was wrong, Sergio Mendes never stops amazing me with the way that he is always contemporary and classic at the same time. I have been a fan of all three for most of my life. I have always tried to keep up with their schedules, but sadly I have been unable to see them until last night. This was a 50th Birthday present from my sister and frankly the best I'll get. I don't think anything can top last night for me.. I am just grateful that we were able to get tickets-the day before.. Everything was perfect, even the amount of performance time for each seemed flawless thanks again, you guys. I will try harder now to find and see these great artists..By the way, H2O wasn't bad, and I thought the genre mix was interesting--definitely entertaining.

    Mixed flavores of Latin Beats

by JoeLatino on 7/9/09Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

This concert is a blend of Jazz, Salsa and Bossa Nova leaving your soul confuse but your feet tired of dancing and your hands red of clapping. If you take your girlfrend or wife she'll be talking about it for weeks. Each artist gives the best of their song, the bands are great as some of the members perform solos or dances that adds to the exciement.
