San Diego State University Aztecs at SDCCU Stadium

Now that the NFL's Chargers have cleared out of town, the Aztecs are the principal tenant of SDCCU Stadium (formerly known as Qualcomm Stadium, formerly known as Jack Murphy Stadium, formerly known as San Diego Stadium). The stadium sits about five miles from the SDSU campus. Designed for pro crowds, SDCCU Stadium offers a loose fit for the light-drawing Aztecs, who make up for it with an entertaining brand of mostly nighttime football.

The team's trademark is its all-black uniform, which dates back to the era of coach Don Coryell. The mascot is the Aztec Warrior, and a "warrior shield" accompanies the team on the sidelines, to be held aloft after victories during the fight song. About two hours before kickoff, the players accompany the Marching Aztecs and members of the spirit squad on the Warrior Walk from the stadium's parking lot to the tunnel leading out onto the field.

San Diego State University Aztecs Football History

The first San Diego State football game was in 1921, but the history of Aztecs football began in earnest with coach Don Coryell, one of the greatest innovators ever to walk a sideline. Coryell took over as coach in 1961, leading San Diego State to undefeated seasons in 1966 and 1968 in the NCAA's small-college division and in 1969 at the NCAA's top level. Instead of competing directly with college football's big schools, he built his program by doing the things they tended not to do. He recruited heavily from junior colleges, and on offense he took to the air rather than play the game on the ground. The Aztecs produced a number of NFL quarterbacks during his time on campus: Don Horn, Jesse Freitas, Dennis Shaw and 1980 NFL MVP Brian Sipe. Coryell decamped for the NFL in 1973, and his radical emphasis on the passing game came to be known as the Air Coryell offense.

If Coryell put San Diego State on the map, it was Marshall Faulk who left an indelible mark. A nimble-footed, soft-handed running back, in 1991 Faulk recorded one of the best freshman seasons in college football history, rushing for 1,429 yards and 23 total touchdowns, while scoring 140 points in all. As a junior, in his final season, Faulk did a bit of everything, running for 1,530 yards and catching 47 passes for 640 yards. In 1994, Faulk was the second overall pick in the NFL draft.

    Tight seating, irritating fans

by Handyman on 9/12/23Snapdragon Stadium - San Diego

Nice looking venue, but seats are tight — putting you in close proximity to your neighbor. I our case, that was less than ideal.

    Love the Marching Aztecs!

    by Liz on 9/1/23

Snapdragon Stadium is a beautiful stadium, but prices for drinks are crazy expensive! The game was exciting, cheerleaders and dancers were great, but we really loved the Marching Aztecs pregame and halftime performances. Although we were halfway up in section 330, we could still see the action well. Parking was easy and we had fun tailgating before the game. We’ll be back to cheer on the SDSU Aztecs!

    2 Snaps Up

by fanmaniac on 12/4/22Snapdragon Stadium - San Diego

This was a birthday present for my 85 yo mom who is a huge Aztec fan. Great seats with an excellent field level view. Chowed down on excellent burgers and fries at Hodads. The only complaint I have and why I left 4 stars is that the seats are too close together; so much so that the guy seated next to me and I were constantly repositioning ourselves so as not to encroach on each others' space and we are both height and weight proportionate guys. It felt like being in the middle seat in coach on an airplane. I wish the architects had penciled in a few extra inches between seats for a more comfortable experience. As for the parking lot, I parked in the orange lot. There are only 2 or 3 walkways from the parking area up to the entrances. I noticed a lot of people climbing up the embankment instead of using the walkways and climbing down the embankment when the game was over. My question is why was a set of stairs not built between the walkways? The embankment and vegetation are going to be eroded and trampled and eventually will be needing replacement. A permanent set of stairs would have cost more initially, but saved money in the long run. All said, had a great first time experience at Snapdragon Stadium and will definitely be back.

    SDSU vs Air Force

by JT on 11/29/22Snapdragon Stadium - San Diego

It was cool to see the new stadium. Good seats in the lower section. Seats are comfortable but a little flimsy. The sound is great, DJ music, lighting is great. Thing i didnt like was that the video boards one is big and really easy to see. The other on the opposite end is smaller and not so easy to see from far away. The have pepsi, no coke. They need more tv's near the bathrooms or pipe the radio into the bathrooms. Lots of foilage, dirt and plants, could do without that. Took the trolley in, good experince but needs a little more visible security but not bad. Food was good, some over priced some not.

    Aztec Game

by SEB on 11/29/22Snapdragon Stadium - San Diego

Stadium is beautiful, spacious and designed well. Easy parking and access into and out of stadium. Great selection/variety of food’s establishments. Only negatives were seats were too close, especially for a larger person, made eating difficult while seated. And some vendors food was dried out ( pizza slice tasted like card board/too long under heat lamps) , cold ( Hodad’s burger patty, and the one of the stands hot dog buns). Otherwise great facility!

    Great game, good experience.

by GaryB on 11/16/22Snapdragon Stadium - San Diego

Game was very exciting and Aztecs played real good. They are getting better each game. Like I have mentioned before, the stadium experience has been evolving and getting better each time. One thing I noticed this time was they didn't put out the water refill stations they had before. I know it wasn't as hot and a later game but when you can't bring in your own drinks you need to at least have a couple of the refill stations available. Food prices remain too high also.

This is the best stadium in California for college football. I hear the soccer experience is also great. Love the open feel and the 360 degree concourse. Go Aztecs!

    MTS & Trolley times

by Arthurd54 on 11/8/22Snapdragon Stadium - San Diego

The 4pm start time was ok. However, the 7:30pm start time for the November 12th was mot coordinated with MTS and the trolley. This game will end 11pm or later. The last MTS bus to leave Santa Fe station is at 10:08pm. The last Blue Line trolley leaves Oldtown at 11:31. The Green line trolley serves the stadium ok, but when you arrive to transfer to a bkue line trolley, there is No trolley running that late. The same with buses. Grow up San Diego! 8th largest city in the USA. Act like it. Lastly, both the trolley and bus service is excellent otherwise.

I thoroughly enjoyed the singular row of seats adjacent to the “Cutwater Spirits” bar area. Great vibe; lots of laughs, and an exciting win for the Aztecs.

    Snapdragon Stadium Visit Review

by Glenn on 11/8/22Snapdragon Stadium - San Diego

I am an alum having graduated in 1970. Had season tickets early on. Have been going to 1 or 2 games a year since. Snapdragon Stadium Experience The good Beautiful stadium. Beautiful grass field. Restrooms were very nice. Easy in and out of parking lot. The bad Parking in dirt lot for $40. I will not do that again. Seats were small and not enough leg room to allow others to pass without standing up. Food and drinks were too expensive (for me). Asking for a tip to pull the pop top on an $18. beer or for handing me a dried up, barely warm $8 hot dog.
