About the Saratoga Race Course Meet
Each summer, the horse-racing world descends upon Saratoga, New York, to be a part of the legendary Saratoga racetrack meet. The meet lasts 40 racing days spread out over eight weeks from July to September, with the exception of Mondays and Tuesdays. The Travers Stakes, which carries a $1,250,000 purse, is the oldest thoroughbred race in the nation, attracting three-year-old horses who have raced (and won) in Triple Crown events earlier in the season. The Whitney Stakes is open to horses age three and older, and is a "win and you're in" event, with the winner given an automatic berth in the Breeders' Cup Classic. There are three separate tracks at Saratoga, including the 1 1/8-mile main dirt track, the mile-long Mellon Turf Course and a 7-furlong inner turf track. Saratoga Race Course opened in 1863, making it the fourth-oldest racetrack in the United States.
History of the Saratoga Race Course Meet
Saratoga is commonly known as "The Spa," after the nearby springs which give the town of Saratoga Springs its name. While racing in Saratoga Springs first took place as far back as 1847, the first race on what would later be the site of the Oklahoma Training Track was held in 1863, with the main course opening across Union Avenue in 1864. Saratoga Race Course has operated almost every year since, building a reputation as one of the premier courses in all of racing.
For over 150 years, Saratoga has hosted some of the legends in thoroughbred racing, and has been the site of some of the greatest upsets of all time. In 1919, the aptly named Upset defeated Man O' War in the Sanford Memorial Stakes, in the horse's first and only loss, and in 1973, Secretariat lost to Onion in the Whitney Handicap. Saratoga achieved another form of immortality in the 1970s, when Carly Simon referenced the racecourse in her No. 1 single, "You're So Vain," and it's also been referred to in literature by the likes of Ian Fleming and Sherwood Anderson.
We love saratoga, lakegeorge, went to casino, winery too!!
If you have never been to Saratoga for the races you are missing a great experience. Even though we came away on the losing side, it was well worth the trip.
Saratoga has been on my bucket list for many years. Having just spent a couple of days here, now I know why. The track is full of history, charm and class. When the last was over on Labor Day, I didn't want to leave. We loved the experience!
Everyone should experience Saratoga Racing. It’s a real fun time win or loose (hopefully win) Food prices are a bit steep but good. The track is beautiful.
Beautiful track. Perfect Weather. Friendly fans. A great experience and a wonder to behold
Very enjoyable day, nice environment, reasonable price
Buying out tickets to Saratoga I felt was a bit hectic - I would have liked it to be a little more easier to see the seating layout clearer being I was never there before
Large shaded area where adults can hang out and children can play. Lots of options for food and drink. The stands comfortable and well ventilated.
Great people, great atmosphere, great location, terrific horse racing, great food & drink, reasonable pricing. Can't knock a single aspect of this venue. Add a visit to Saratoga racetrack to your Bucket list!
Always a great time. I go to Travers weekend every year. Lot of family things to do around the Saratoga area.
Nothing beats a summer day at Saratoga Race Course. Even if you don't bet anything (or just a few small wagers) there is plenty to see and do, from picnic tables, visiting vendor booths, several bars and dining options, watching the horses leave the paddock, or viewing the races trackside. Every year there are facility upgrades to make the place better with more options without diminishing it's historic feel. Tip: consider saving some money by getting a general admission ticket. There is plenty of non-reserved seating trackside and elsewhere around the grounds, and if you are going to get the full Saratoga experience then you will not be spending very much time in the reserved seats anyway. But either way general admission or reserved seating it is worth going to Saratoga at least once in your life.
Our group thoroughly enjoyed the entire day at Saratoga
Perfect seats. Easy to select seats from the website
Had a great experience. Was with a group of 10. Easy to get into the track. All staff was very friendly and accommodating.
First, using our mobile tickets allowed us to beat the lines of people buying tickets. Next, the seats were great. It was comfortable and allowed us to have a great time. Plus, WE WON
Very nice day at the track. Only problem was reserved parking we bought in advance through Ticketmaster was oversold, and we ended up parking between two trees. Other were turned away. You would think the site would know its capacity and limit sales accordingly.
Great except we want the option to print our tickets!!
Great time, great venue, great races. The people/staff were very friendly and helpful. Had a great time. We’ll be back next summer!
Thursday ticket seats had many bees! Only watched first 5 races and left seats! First day no problems was in different section.
Breakfast at the track, followed by visit to Racing Museum and Hall of Fame, capped by an exciting afternoon at the races. Beautiful weather and a great experience.
