San Jose Sharks History

The California Golden Seals played at the Oakland Coliseum from 1967–1976 before relocating to Cleveland. While a failure at the box office and on the ice, the Seals sowed the seeds for the Sharks' arrival some 15 years later. With Wayne Gretzky's trade to Los Angeles in 1988, hockey fever spread across non-traditional markets, and San Jose was among the first cities into which the league ventured.

The Sharks initially played at the Cow Palace in Daly City in 1991 before moving into their current home, the SAP Center, in 1993. The new digs agreed with the team, as they experienced an NHL record 58-point increase over the prior season. Early stars such as Sergei Makarov, Pat Falloon and the Latvian duo of Sandis Ozoliņš and Artūrs Irbe gave the Sharks an early level of respectability.

Gaining a reputation as giant-killers, the upstart Sharks dispatched the heavily favored Detroit Red Wings in the 1994 Western Conference Finals and the Presidents' Trophy-winning St. Louis Blues in 2000. The Sharks continued to flirt with success for the next decade, riding the talents of such star players as Owen Nolan, Marco Sturm, Evgeni Nabokov, Patrick Marleau, and Joe Thornton.

The Sharks went on to win the Presidents' Trophy in 2009, and have captured a total of six Pacific Division titles and appeared in the Stanley Cup Playoffs 21 times.

  • Avs Win!!!

by Satyrlicious on 3/25/22SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

Kindly tacky the Sharks fan did the “Avs you suck” right after moment to address war in Ukraine. Food was kinda off that night (bland, uninspired) & it was hard to see what beers each station had

  • Seating

by Sparky on 3/21/22SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 4 out of 5

The sharks game itself was awesome. We sat at section 101 row 4 behind visitor bench, these were not good seat very hard to see the game due to the coaches being in the way. People behind us mad it very hard to enjoy the game they were ALWAYS talking and not even about the game.

Amazing experience. Sat in the 4th row in the lower bowl and had a great time. Experiencing the game on tv doesn't conapre to sitting that close in person!

  • Fun and Great Seats!

by reneheartsee on 3/15/22SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

We had a great time, the Sharks Beat LA! The seats were A-Awesome. We were on the lower level against the wall, so we were able to lean forward and/or sit up on the chair. Plus the tank was not as crowded as it normally is making it comfortable overall. We sure missed vibe, and glad to be back! Con- Food and drinks was expensive as always :-P

  • Bag limits

by Sierrah on 3/8/22SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 3 out of 5

We missed the beginning of the game because we had to take my purse back to the hotel room. When my 9x5x2 purse was fairly empty, it flattened to 9x6x1. Missing the beginning of the game, after specifically switching to an allowed sized purse, spoiled an otherwise good experience. The delicious bbq joint with seating upstairs was a highlight.

  • Ummm what?

by Kalculator on 3/8/22SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 2 out of 5

There was a violent brawl in the stands, and the sharks were not playing to their potential. Not my best night at the tank.

  • What a Game

by Burg on 3/8/22SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

I'm actually not a fan of the Sharks and I went to the game to watch the Predators. We whooped 8-0! But I will say, I did like what I saw that the Sharks organization does for the community of San Jose such as supporting their local artists or what they do for childrend that are disabled and want to play hockey on the ice. That was really great to see. It's as they say, "Hockey is for everyone." Other than that, I had no issues at the games. Both Sharks and Preds fans came up to talk to me or my girlfriend (her first NHL game). It was a real friendly environment. It was a shame to see the fight in the stands against a group of Sharks and Preds fans. Wish people would get a long and don't let their drinks get to them.

  • Go Sharks

  • Shark Tank Experience

by GiantsFan on 3/3/22SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

We LOVE going to the Shark Tank for our NHL in-person games because you are not subjected to the in your face "entertainment" as one is at other arenas.

  • Sharks

  • Great time

by NDFANATIC1 on 3/2/22SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

Beautiful arena. One of the best I've been to. Too bad it was such a small crowd. Fun game. If you're a hockey fan, I would put this as one of the go to arenas to visit

  • Nice venue for a hockey game

by SteveO on 3/1/22SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

Not a bad angle no matter where you sit, the ushers were very courteous and helpful , overall nice venue - enjoyed our visit

  • Bruins Triumph 3-1

by Ross on 3/1/22SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

Fun night. The SAP stadium is great venue to showcase hockey. Plenty of hotels within close walking distance (mile or less). They offered great food choices. Friendly staff. Great crowd. The Sharks fans are very passionate about their team. Even though I am a Boston Bruins fan, it was quite the experience to watch them celebrate their goal. Electric atmosphere.

  • It was pretty nice.

by MikeS on 2/27/22SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 4 out of 5

The arena and parking lot was fantastic, very easy to get to. The experience at the game was a little lackluster, no programs before the game, no mention about stealth night or any interactions with the crowd. It was just a very straightforward hockey game event and no pizzazz.

  • Sharks vs Islanders

by Beverley Eyre on 2/27/22SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 3 out of 5

I'm only going to focus on the negative now, because I basically liked the game. But there were some negatives. First of all, it was too loud. And the loudness was too long in duration. I brought a friend along, who had never been to a hockey game and he was looking forward to it. But I couldn't explain anything to him because whenever there was no active play on the ice there was incredibly loud music/noise and he couldn't hear me. Every. Time. No gaps. It was very very annoying. Next, why did they wait so long to announce the goals? Even my friend commented on that. That they announced them twice isn't that important, annoying but not important. But to wait over 5 minutes fro the announcement? Lastly, and I realize this isn't the fault of SAP but of the league, I couldn't stand the "overtime" and the "shootout". Why is it so bad to end in a tie? You might as well have a lottery drawing to determine the winner.

  • great first NHL experience

by Daniel D on 2/25/22SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 4 out of 5

The event was my first NHL experience. There was a good organization and great entertainment. Unfortunately, the event was not so popular. Accordingly, the atmosphere could have been better. The process of ticket sales went smoothly and could be processed quickly.

  • Fun time even in a loss

by Rick B. on 2/18/22SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

My first opportunity to take my son to an NHL game, and we had a blast. We arrived early to watch warmups, take photos, and grab our seats. One of the ushers commented on my sweatshirt, which was nice. The COVID protocols were handled well. I like that San Jose shuts off the street in front of the SAP Center so ticketholders can walk in unobstructedly. The arena itself is gorgeous and has many amenities for food and vendors. Hopefully, we'll be able to return on an annual basis, as my son and I enjoy hockey quite a bit. Even though the Sharks lost this game, it was still a fun night to remember.
