San Jose Sharks History

The California Golden Seals played at the Oakland Coliseum from 1967–1976 before relocating to Cleveland. While a failure at the box office and on the ice, the Seals sowed the seeds for the Sharks' arrival some 15 years later. With Wayne Gretzky's trade to Los Angeles in 1988, hockey fever spread across non-traditional markets, and San Jose was among the first cities into which the league ventured.

The Sharks initially played at the Cow Palace in Daly City in 1991 before moving into their current home, the SAP Center, in 1993. The new digs agreed with the team, as they experienced an NHL record 58-point increase over the prior season. Early stars such as Sergei Makarov, Pat Falloon and the Latvian duo of Sandis Ozoliņš and Artūrs Irbe gave the Sharks an early level of respectability.

Gaining a reputation as giant-killers, the upstart Sharks dispatched the heavily favored Detroit Red Wings in the 1994 Western Conference Finals and the Presidents' Trophy-winning St. Louis Blues in 2000. The Sharks continued to flirt with success for the next decade, riding the talents of such star players as Owen Nolan, Marco Sturm, Evgeni Nabokov, Patrick Marleau, and Joe Thornton.

The Sharks went on to win the Presidents' Trophy in 2009, and have captured a total of six Pacific Division titles and appeared in the Stanley Cup Playoffs 21 times.

  • Sharks were amazing

The game was really exciting! The Sharks were amazing. Imagine, Doug Murray scored a hat trick and we were there live to witness it. AND, we saw it all up close and personal with our glass side seats. Yeah, definitely a great experience.

Great pre-season game, the new Sharks with Dany Heatley will be strong contenders this year. While the Coyotes :-(

  • Pre Season is like a Playoff Preview

by LAWR on 9/21/09HP Pavilion At San Jose - San JoseRating: 4 out of 5

The Sharks were back on the ice and getting a clear message to the Coyotes that they will continue to dominate. Game was hard hitting with great checking and more than a few fights. Great to see some of the guys trying for spots on the team. Always a pleasure to go. 5 to 4 OT

  • Fights were nice

The first five minutes the crowed was fired up with all of the fights. It continued throughout the game, even into overtime.

  • Sharks Hockey - Great for the Whole Family

by savgwmn on 9/20/09HP Pavilion At San Jose - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

Whether preseason or regular season, taking in a Sharks hockey game really is fun for the whole family. The fans are great and there's not a bad seat in the house (so you don't necessarily have to spend a fortune to attend). Be careful though -- once you've attended your first Sharks game, you'll be hooked!! This preseason matchup looked like a blowout... until the Coyotes came back to tie up the game -- forcing us into overtime. Thankfully, Marleau pulled off a nice shot to seal the deal, and the Tank erupted into cheers. Fans were certainly not disappointed... can't wait for the next home game!!

  • Sharks pre-season vs Coyotes

Spirited play, great start, fine fight, so-so middle, exciting finish!

  • Sharks Crunch Coyotes Hard!

by SantaCruzJewel on 9/20/09HP Pavilion At San Jose - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

Sharks fans reunited in full swing for one of the first pre-season games - energy was through the roof (as always)! Our Sharks didn't let us down - five-four in overtime. Phoenix slid by us in a quick series of three goals in a row to tie, but Sharks showed prowess and skill with several new players (and some of our solid faves), and won a strong game. We miss Cheech and Michalek, and we bet that we'll be seeing JR in the announcers' booth or in some kind of NHL spokesperson capacity. GO SHARKS!

  • Sharks Rock!

Even for a pre-season game we had a blast! We took our friends for their first time and they loved it! We are never disapponted at a Sharks game!

  • It was fantastic

by Chaney on 9/20/09HP Pavilion At San Jose - San JoseRating: 4 out of 5

This was the first professional ice hockey game my family and I have ever attended. We all had a great time. So much so that the periods seemed to fly by too quickly, and before we knew it, it was time to go back home to Tahoe. Because of this great experience we're already looking forward to another visit to an arena.

  • Sharks awesome as always
