San Jose Sharks History

The California Golden Seals played at the Oakland Coliseum from 1967–1976 before relocating to Cleveland. While a failure at the box office and on the ice, the Seals sowed the seeds for the Sharks' arrival some 15 years later. With Wayne Gretzky's trade to Los Angeles in 1988, hockey fever spread across non-traditional markets, and San Jose was among the first cities into which the league ventured.

The Sharks initially played at the Cow Palace in Daly City in 1991 before moving into their current home, the SAP Center, in 1993. The new digs agreed with the team, as they experienced an NHL record 58-point increase over the prior season. Early stars such as Sergei Makarov, Pat Falloon and the Latvian duo of Sandis Ozoliņš and Artūrs Irbe gave the Sharks an early level of respectability.

Gaining a reputation as giant-killers, the upstart Sharks dispatched the heavily favored Detroit Red Wings in the 1994 Western Conference Finals and the Presidents' Trophy-winning St. Louis Blues in 2000. The Sharks continued to flirt with success for the next decade, riding the talents of such star players as Owen Nolan, Marco Sturm, Evgeni Nabokov, Patrick Marleau, and Joe Thornton.

The Sharks went on to win the Presidents' Trophy in 2009, and have captured a total of six Pacific Division titles and appeared in the Stanley Cup Playoffs 21 times.

by Pink Kitty on 3/21/23SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

Super fun game and amazing crowd. Was there to support the ny islanders and they did not disappoint. 4-1 game and there weren’t too many islanders fans but we went wild. Thank you for a memorable experience.

  • The Shark Tank

by GiantsFan on 3/20/23SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

Over the years, my wife and I have experienced firsthand NHL Hockey at the Oakland Coliseum Arena (Oakland Seals), Rogers Arena, Climate Pledge Arena, FLA Live Arena and the Shark Tank (aka SAP Center). Hands down, the Shark Tank provided the best NHL experience!

  • Completely love it!

by Malu on 3/7/23SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

It’s not my first time going to the Sharks game at SAP center but this last time it exceeded all my expectations! They had free long sleeves shirts for all people attending. I went by myself and I felt extremely secure there. Also it was easy to get a great parking around the arena!

  • Awesome

by Noni on 3/7/23SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

Took our adult grandsons to a game on Feb. 25. Easy entry with our tickets on smartphone. Celebration of Patrick Marleau's retirement is memorable. My only complaint was having to climb stairs to our seats in the last top row. At 77&79 years of age it was very difficult. But we had a blast!!

  • SAP center

by Shark fan's Husband on 3/7/23SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

As a non-Hockey fan I really enjoyed my time at the SAP watching the Sharks. Security was abundant but very friendly and helpful!

  • Pretty good arena

by Jester on 3/7/23SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 4 out of 5

The game was great. The seats were pretty hard and not too comfortable. Also, the PA lady screams so loud on Sharks goals it set off a decibel warning on my watch.

  • Awesome Retirement party

by Doug B on 3/1/23SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

From the Legends Game the previous night to Patrick Marleau's retirement speech the second night was incredible

  • Incredible

by DRod on 2/28/23SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

The tribute to Patrick was the best ever...very touching, there were tears and laughter. It was our first experience being at a professional hockey game and my husband and I loved it. Have always been a Shark fan, but this was our first time seeing one in person. Will come again.

  • Got extra hockey for free!

by Mick D on 2/28/23SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 4 out of 5

Went to see my beloved Blackhawks play the Sharks. Had great seats from Ticketmaster. Got extra hockey with my ticket....... the game went into overtime tied at 3-3. Nobody scored in the overtime period so then a shoot-out to decide the outcome. Phillip Kurasev scored for the Hawks, and goalie Petr Mrazek saved all three shots he faced - Hawks Win !

  • loud mouth drunks

by Jerry on 2/28/23SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

So tired of loudmouth drunks cussing and acting stupid in the stands. There should be zero tolerance for these people. I am blown away that there are adults that act that way.

  • Excellent

by K on 2/28/23SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

The staff for drinks and food was fast and easy. The restrooms were clean and well-maintained. Security was quick yet thorough. I hope to attend another game soon.

  • New Favorite Arena

From the ease of parking to the single concourse level to the fan experience, this was the best Hockey venue I've been to

  • Wonderful Family Experience

by D. Y. on 2/26/23SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

Not only was this my first time to a hockey game, but it was shared with my nine-year-old son too. Everything was wonderful from the moment we showed up. It was storming pretty well outside the SAP Center so we were not very enthusiastic about waiting in the line but fortunately the SAP team and Clear had partnered up to get families with young children in quickly. Once inside, the staff was quick to guide or direct you in the direction of your seats or whatever service/shopping you needed. The facility was incredibly clean and facilities were very well kept. Food selections were vast and reasonably priced given it is an NHL game- definitely no higher than MLB and NFL games we have been to recently. Our seats were incredible! We were in Section 121, Row 2, Seats 1 & 2. I bought the tickets about 6 months prior on what i found to be an incredible deal! The view, the atmosphere, and the excitement were all so picturesque for first timers like my son and me. Hotels are nearby and easy to walk to and from. Most are near the Convention Center. If you're staying in that area, I do recommend traveling down the well-lit Santa Clara Ave rather than Barack Obama Blvd which is very industrial and poorly lit. We can't wait to go back!

  • 13th year in a row ans still rocking

by The Myth on 2/21/23SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

Started out with just the two of us and now most of the family joins us. New section with same great views. Love the club area and it's amenities. Long time club level host and server Michael is working the bar and he remembers us. Easily got through entry. Every staff member was so nice. A little pricey but for a once a year game, worth every penny. Many a suite next year. Thank you
