San Jose Sharks History

The California Golden Seals played at the Oakland Coliseum from 1967–1976 before relocating to Cleveland. While a failure at the box office and on the ice, the Seals sowed the seeds for the Sharks' arrival some 15 years later. With Wayne Gretzky's trade to Los Angeles in 1988, hockey fever spread across non-traditional markets, and San Jose was among the first cities into which the league ventured.

The Sharks initially played at the Cow Palace in Daly City in 1991 before moving into their current home, the SAP Center, in 1993. The new digs agreed with the team, as they experienced an NHL record 58-point increase over the prior season. Early stars such as Sergei Makarov, Pat Falloon and the Latvian duo of Sandis Ozoliņš and Artūrs Irbe gave the Sharks an early level of respectability.

Gaining a reputation as giant-killers, the upstart Sharks dispatched the heavily favored Detroit Red Wings in the 1994 Western Conference Finals and the Presidents' Trophy-winning St. Louis Blues in 2000. The Sharks continued to flirt with success for the next decade, riding the talents of such star players as Owen Nolan, Marco Sturm, Evgeni Nabokov, Patrick Marleau, and Joe Thornton.

The Sharks went on to win the Presidents' Trophy in 2009, and have captured a total of six Pacific Division titles and appeared in the Stanley Cup Playoffs 21 times.

  • Great way to spend an evening!

by Michael Dahl on 9/27/24SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

The game was good, even though we lost. We did get free tacos! There was lots of action and the two young gentlemen with me seemed to like the whole atmosphere. Definitely a good activity for pre-teen, young adults, or even an old timer like me. They've stated they're looking forward to their next hockey game. It'll probably be soon and I'll have to tell you about it then. GO SHARKS!

  • Above and beyond!!

by Don A on 9/27/24SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

I went to the 9/24 Sharks game for my birthday with my dad, who has Parkinson’s, but is still somewhat mobile, but very slow and unsteady when walking. Not completely thinking, I chose our seats for the seats for the experience, and not totally for ease of access, and got seats 3 rows from the glass. Needless to say, it took some effort to get dad down into his seat, and it took some help from the usher stationed in the area. Without any request or even discussion, this usher took it upon himself to arrange for a wheelchair to be brought to the club level entrance in our section for after the game to transport my dad up and out of the stands, through the concourse, and out to the car, which made exiting the Arena about 1000 times simpler and easier. I would like to commend the staff in section 114, and the Arena staff in general for going above and beyond in their guest service, care, and compassion I providing this un-requested, but fantastically convenient and amazing service!!

Even though sharks lost it was a great game. Fans behave well.

  • Great, lots of fun!

by Tdubedo on 7/7/24Tech CU Arena - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

Great experience. I’ve been to past prospect scrimmages and this one was the best so far. There were a lot more people there so the atmosphere was exciting! Obviously the #1 pick, Macklin Celebrini, had a lot to do with the size of the crowd. Personally I was excited to see all the prospects. I haven’t been this excited for a hockey season to begin in a long time!

  • Sharks event

by Corey on 7/7/24Tech CU Arena - San JoseRating: 3 out of 5

The event itself was fantastic. But I had issues with my ticket transfer. Said successful transfer It added it to my wallet on my phone but didn’t work. Ticketmaster wasn’t displaying the barcode to scan. Almost didn’t get into the event.

  • Getting re-excited for Sharks Hockey

by Kanilea117 on 7/7/24Tech CU Arena - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

Attending the Sharks Prospect Scrimmage reignited my enthusiasm and excitement for the Sharks Hockey season! Young talent brings in new talent and will hopefully raise up the Sharks from the past few seasons if heartache for the fans and organization. Go 🦈 Sharks

  • Excited for Future

by Sharks Fan Too on 7/2/24SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

We went to the San Jose Sharks Draft Party for many reasons: they're our team; it was going to be a hot day; free entry to also check out the VIP lounge with free food & beverages; free parking; Sharks photo ops & entertainment; AND watch the NHL Draft on the humongous center-hung display with other friends excited to go. Well, we never made it to the VIP lounge (so no complimentary food & beverages), but we are much more excited for the new season & future with our team - the San Jose Sharks! On a side note, being in the presence of streamers, confetti, and horns always add to the excitement!

  • A draft party to remember!

by Sharkpark on 7/1/24SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 4 out of 5

I liked the 2023 event because it was the first one I attended and it was less crowded with giveaways. This year was highly anticipated because they had the first pick and should experience a return to prosperity like the Baltimore Orioles are, after years of futility.

  • Great NHL 2024 draft watch party!

by Cathy on 7/1/24SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

The NHL 2024 draft watch party was a success. The party was well organized, and there were fun events happening all afternoon. Enjoyed the concession foods and had a Celetini as well. Good to see so many faithful fans show up with happy, optimistic faces. My son and I enjoyed it very much. Thank you.

  • I didn’t go

by Matty on 7/1/24SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

I was too scared to leave the house. The Sharks are fine. People hear differently from me usually since a panic attack I had in April. I’m a fan, was a coach, and am currently a player looking to land somewhere and I was testing how much I was worth. I won’t do it again. On to Fed or Finland for me, basically.

  • Fabulous Party

by TBP on 7/1/24SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

Fans could take a picture in the shark head, or in front of Marleau's retired number, ride an electric shark, or just have a great time with Sharkie and enjoy the anticipation of a rebuilding team with your fellow Sharks fans. It was a great time.

  • AWESOME

  • Excellent Fan Night with The Sharks!!

by Sharks Fan Night!! on 4/16/24SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

Great time and awesome experience!! Won a signed jersey from #4 Burroughs! Family got to go down on the ice at the end of the game for the jersey! Will never forget!!

  • San Jose Sharks vs LA Kings

by Wallen on 4/7/24SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

The staff is the best! My daughter climbed the stairs and rode the escalator in the front for about 1 and 1/2 hours. The staff cheered her on and gave her encouraging words as she kept going. She is 1 and 1/2 and just loved those stairs. When we had to change her diaper, they took us to the first aid room and let us use the room to change her. The staff there was super friendly and would ask for updates on her stair count. Even though I paid for a Sharks game, we got much more from those working there. It was a wonderful experience, so we love driving a little less than 200 hundred miles to see the Sharks.

  • Holiday Treat

by LMF on 4/7/24SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

On holiday so decided to watch the ice hockey. Booked parking so very easy to park. Amazing arena - very easy to find your way around and comfy seat (unlike at home). Easy to exit car park.

  • What is going on with the Sharks?!

by Susan on 3/26/24SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 1 out of 5

The team cannot win to save its life. The players are minor league at best. They have traded all the good players. What is management thinking? It is painful to watch.

  • Chi-Town

by Franko on 3/26/24SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

It was a great experience. First time at the SAP Center, Arena and I will probably go every year because it’s easy access and easy parking. Also, the Chicago Blackhawks won in overtime 5–4. Thank you again for having me and all the other Blackhawks fans.
