San Jose Sharks History

The California Golden Seals played at the Oakland Coliseum from 1967–1976 before relocating to Cleveland. While a failure at the box office and on the ice, the Seals sowed the seeds for the Sharks' arrival some 15 years later. With Wayne Gretzky's trade to Los Angeles in 1988, hockey fever spread across non-traditional markets, and San Jose was among the first cities into which the league ventured.

The Sharks initially played at the Cow Palace in Daly City in 1991 before moving into their current home, the SAP Center, in 1993. The new digs agreed with the team, as they experienced an NHL record 58-point increase over the prior season. Early stars such as Sergei Makarov, Pat Falloon and the Latvian duo of Sandis Ozoliņš and Artūrs Irbe gave the Sharks an early level of respectability.

Gaining a reputation as giant-killers, the upstart Sharks dispatched the heavily favored Detroit Red Wings in the 1994 Western Conference Finals and the Presidents' Trophy-winning St. Louis Blues in 2000. The Sharks continued to flirt with success for the next decade, riding the talents of such star players as Owen Nolan, Marco Sturm, Evgeni Nabokov, Patrick Marleau, and Joe Thornton.

The Sharks went on to win the Presidents' Trophy in 2009, and have captured a total of six Pacific Division titles and appeared in the Stanley Cup Playoffs 21 times.

  • An unforgettable Experience!

The SAP Center was a blast to watch a game. The Boston Bruins were in town which we were rooting for. The Food was great and the whole arena was clean. The traffic was also mild so it made it easy to get around San Jose. Oh and we ended up winning the game 3-1. The seats were amazing, with reasonable pricing it was a great view. Thanks Ticketmaster. I would recommend anyone to visit the shark tank and use ticketmaster for great deals! 5/5

  • Great time.

Well, my team won and since I rarely get to see them, we had a great time. The venue is good and, despite multiple stoppages in play (today's NHL), the event was very enjoyable.

  • Very Enjoyable Arena

by ShannonT71 on 11/14/17SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 4 out of 5

I was in town for the weekend and decided to attend the Sharks game with my fiance. It was our first pro hockey match. From buying the tickets the day of the event, including parking pass, to driving over and parking at the stadium, it was very easy. Using the mobile app, we had no issues getting to parking or into the game. The stadium is nice with plenty of concession options scattered throughout. The bathrooms were clean and also readily available. Overall a great experience, and I'd do it again if the opportunity arises.

  • Even the cheap seats are good

I haven't been to this arena for 10 years or so and was my first hockey game ever. Sat pretty high up but still had a great view. TV's everywhere for when you're up getting drinks/snacks so you'll never miss a play. Ticketmaster sends wayyyyy too many emails regarding this one game tho.

  • Sharks Dominate

by Drummerdonski on 11/4/17SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

It was a most enjoyable game. The Sharks dominated throughout most of the game. The final score didn't indicate just how much the Sharks dominated. There were a lot of Maple Leafs fans in my section. Thankfully, they were well behaved, and a few of them were very knowledgeable hockey fans. All in all, my buddy and I had a great night. If the Sharks continue to play as they did against the Maple Leafs, there's a good chance that they will still be playing hockey in June!!! Go Sharks!

  • Sharks vs Leafs

Great game! It was great to see Patty back at the tank sad he was in a Leafs jersey.

  • Friends among fans

by OneShotFox on 10/19/17SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

Originally I planned on going to this event with a friend but they cancelled so I went alone. Drove out from Watsonville to have myself a good time and indeed I did! At first I was skeptical and anxious, but as I approached my seat, I was met with smiles, waves, and greetings by fellow fans sitting around me. Even though I was by myself, Sharks fans know how to make a socially anxious person feel welcomed and comfortable! Although Sharks lost the game, I had fun and enjoyed myself. The Los Tribuones jerseys were bada** as well! Looking forward to attending future games!

  • Fun but I'll pass next year

by LayDeeBugLove on 9/28/17SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 2 out of 5

While it was enjoyable to get pictures with my fave Sharks players, the whole fan fest was extremely unorganized. The lines for pics/autographs was very long and hand shaking was not allowed nor was personal photography. Face painting line was over an hour wait! Nothing to entertain you while you waited in the line. Food vendors were out of several items that were on the menu. The outdoor aspect was a joke unless you spent $70+ for the tailgate party. I don't recommend this event for casual Sharks fans or people who get cranky waiting in line.

  • San Jose Sharks Axxess

by LakersFan525 on 9/28/17SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

I managed to get photos with 6 different San Jose Sharks players after 3 rounds of waiting in line for photo booths, including a 90+ minute wait at Photo Booth #1 where I ended up meeting Ryan Carpenter and Barclay Goodrow. This made my entire day as I added 5 new players to My "Have A Photo With Him" San Jose Sharks Team.

  • Fun event but too many people.

by Tealie22 on 9/28/17SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 4 out of 5

The Tank Tailgate area outside was fun and most of the players except Pavelski were fine with taking pics and signing stuff. As for the Fan Fest inside the arena, they sell entirely too many tickets. The lines were ridiculously long and you didn't even know who you were waiting in line for. They would do better to raise the price of the fest $25, but limit the attendance so the lines aren't so long. They also need to know who they're waiting in line for. The Legends game was great fun however.
