San Jose Sharks History

The California Golden Seals played at the Oakland Coliseum from 1967–1976 before relocating to Cleveland. While a failure at the box office and on the ice, the Seals sowed the seeds for the Sharks' arrival some 15 years later. With Wayne Gretzky's trade to Los Angeles in 1988, hockey fever spread across non-traditional markets, and San Jose was among the first cities into which the league ventured.

The Sharks initially played at the Cow Palace in Daly City in 1991 before moving into their current home, the SAP Center, in 1993. The new digs agreed with the team, as they experienced an NHL record 58-point increase over the prior season. Early stars such as Sergei Makarov, Pat Falloon and the Latvian duo of Sandis Ozoliņš and Artūrs Irbe gave the Sharks an early level of respectability.

Gaining a reputation as giant-killers, the upstart Sharks dispatched the heavily favored Detroit Red Wings in the 1994 Western Conference Finals and the Presidents' Trophy-winning St. Louis Blues in 2000. The Sharks continued to flirt with success for the next decade, riding the talents of such star players as Owen Nolan, Marco Sturm, Evgeni Nabokov, Patrick Marleau, and Joe Thornton.

The Sharks went on to win the Presidents' Trophy in 2009, and have captured a total of six Pacific Division titles and appeared in the Stanley Cup Playoffs 21 times.

  • Shark Tank Stinks

by DallasandHouston on 2/21/18SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 1 out of 5

I have been to a number of different hockey arenas. This one stinks on several levels. Although our seats were front row upper bowl, the visibility was not as good as expected. The second issue we had was with the Sharks fans. Hey, I understand I am not there to cheer for their team. However, I am conservative at best when it comes to cheering for my team when I am at someone else's arena so I did not expect the rude behavior I experienced. I welcome the opposing team's fans in my home arena - without an opposing team, there is no game and without fans, there is no financial basis for a team. No one likes rude and obnoxious behavior whether you are rooting for the home team or the away team. There is no excuse for being rude. I will not waste my money going back.

This is a great place for a Hockey and always make the drive when the DALLAS STARS come to Town. Just get your cash out for parking if you don't want to park far away. Don't understand why $25.00 is a parking fee. I understand the $12.00 cocktail, but parking to me if a rip-off big time.

  • Shark Attack!

by Littlereata on 2/13/18SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

The game was exciting. The Sharks made a goal within the first few minutes! And their last 2 goals were made in the last 10. During the entire game I was on the edge of my seat. The fans had such enthusiasm and made the game more fun. This was my first hockey game and it exceeding my expectations.

  • Went to Sharks game

by Steve90031 on 1/24/18SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

Enjoyed the game. Only bad thing was that the map on Ticketmaster made it look like the tickets were two rows down from the Handicapped seats, when the hsndicapped seats were on a different level.

  • Prepaid parking is horrible

by Titus5 on 1/18/18SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 1 out of 5

Prepaid for ALMA parking lot since I had older out of town guests, bad idea. (I usually look for street parking and walk.) Lot NOT shown on the map, NO ONE knew where the lot was. Employees & cops directing traffic sent me to 3 different WRONG lots, in mad traffic! We gave up and parked at a hotel since we were then late. Turns out that was the alma lot and attendants knew its impossible to find without signs or a map. I blame this on bad management.

  • Won the game can't complain!

by Anonymous on 1/16/18SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 4 out of 5

Great game. Free jersey night is always special. Typical overpriced foods & drinks. Only complaint is that people continued to walk back to their seats during play. View frequently interrupted as they worked their way down the crowded aisle. Ushers could have controlled this a little better. Otherwise wonderful venue.

  • by Anonymous on 12/13/17SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 3 out of 5

Small arena. Many seats have obstructed view. Better to sit in tbe middle of the row if sitting in the upper level

  • Excellent Game!, Nice Arena!

by MikeW74 on 12/11/17SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 4 out of 5

SAP Center was cool, a neat arena, easy to get to and get around in. I took the CALTrain down from San Francisco, and it was easy due to the train station proximity. The game itself was very entertaining, the quality of play was good. There was one usher who seemed a bit stiff, she kicked a couple of people out, but I had no issue with here. Overall I had a good time. I'd recommend this place and these seats.
