San Jose Sharks History

The California Golden Seals played at the Oakland Coliseum from 1967–1976 before relocating to Cleveland. While a failure at the box office and on the ice, the Seals sowed the seeds for the Sharks' arrival some 15 years later. With Wayne Gretzky's trade to Los Angeles in 1988, hockey fever spread across non-traditional markets, and San Jose was among the first cities into which the league ventured.

The Sharks initially played at the Cow Palace in Daly City in 1991 before moving into their current home, the SAP Center, in 1993. The new digs agreed with the team, as they experienced an NHL record 58-point increase over the prior season. Early stars such as Sergei Makarov, Pat Falloon and the Latvian duo of Sandis Ozoliņš and Artūrs Irbe gave the Sharks an early level of respectability.

Gaining a reputation as giant-killers, the upstart Sharks dispatched the heavily favored Detroit Red Wings in the 1994 Western Conference Finals and the Presidents' Trophy-winning St. Louis Blues in 2000. The Sharks continued to flirt with success for the next decade, riding the talents of such star players as Owen Nolan, Marco Sturm, Evgeni Nabokov, Patrick Marleau, and Joe Thornton.

The Sharks went on to win the Presidents' Trophy in 2009, and have captured a total of six Pacific Division titles and appeared in the Stanley Cup Playoffs 21 times.

  • They are a very young team but they are starting to gel

by SHOGUN on 1/7/25SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

Always an exciting one. They try hard but as usual for a young team it takes time. I am excited about their future. Go Sharks!!!

  • Great Experience Overall!

by Jon on 12/30/24SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

The view is great no matter where you sit in those amazingly padded comfortable seats. For those sitting in the upper bowl, I highly recommend Section 215. The atmosphere is always electric, even if the team doesn’t win in the end. The food options are pretty good coming from a perspective with no dietary restrictions, but the lines can be long depending on where you go. I guess that’s just stadiums for you! My favorite part is that the arena is super accessible by public transit—I took VTA’s Light Rail to “San Jose Diridon” and walked from there. It makes getting there way easier, no traffic to drive through, no parking to worry about.

  • 1st hockey game

  • Sharks vs Jackets

by Train Wrek on 12/21/24SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

On holidays in California, my spouse and I went to a Sharks 🦈 game. Great atmosphere, good consession stands for food/drink/merchandise. Parking was awesome. The only thing that was disappointing was the building was not full. While they were small in size, they were strong in spirit. The Sharks 🦈 beat the Blue Jackets 2-1 in overtime. So a great finish.

  • Everything you’d expect from San Jose

by Traveling Hockey Fan on 12/17/24SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 1 out of 5

Wouldn’t it suck living so close to a world class city but being in San Jose? Wait till you enter the dated SAP Center and find yourself surrounded by San Jose Shark fans. The SAP Center has clearly seen better decades, but the nearly 30 year old arena shows its age. The concourse is dated, the seats are old, and the general amenities and features are lacking even the most basic current expectations. Shark fans are classless, rude, and obnoxious. They have rules no other hockey arena does, and if you pay the premium for glass tickets you’ll be told not to hit the glass by arena employees. Location is amazing! Close to airport and downtown. You can easily walk to this stadium. In review, the stadium and fans make this an arena I would skip.

  • Sharks Win, Hard to reach Arena

by DMV on 12/2/24SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 4 out of 5

This was my first Sharks game and I would love to go to more, but since I live in SF getting there is difficult. Have to take Bart and then CalTrain. It is not so bad getting there but getting home took 2 1/2 hours. Luckily it was an early game. Wish the Sharks could have more earlier games on weekends. The atmosphere at the arena was good not as good as other hockey teams I have been to. Food choices were good. I went to a chicken eatery and the chicken was hot and tasty the fries were burnt though. Also, I like my drink with ice but they only served bottles. Overall, good experience. Would recommend if never been to a game go better to watch in person than on TV.

  • Ceremony much better than the game

by Jochen Werres on 11/29/24SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 4 out of 5

Shame that the young Sharks did not take a leaf out of Joe Thorntons emotional speech. The ceremony was class the game was not. Nice to see though the SAP arena nearly full. Which now seldom and has normally no fans atmosphere. Shame it was always full in the late 2010s.

  • An enjoyable evening all around, for the last 15 years

by The Myth on 11/28/24SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

We go annually to the shark's saber's game. This year we had the whole family and was great. Always sit in the club section (extra money is worth the bar and restroom access). ALL the staff were great and the drinks and food were great. Will continue to go and maybe a suite for the next game... Love you guys

  • Always a blast

I flew in from Atlanta to see the Sharks play, and, even though it’s not my first trip, it always takes me back to my first trip! The staff were friendly and the people in attendance are always very nice! Would highly recommend!

  • Best experience ever

by Bri on 11/4/24SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

Best experience I have ever had at a hockey game. The new NetCelly Lounge was absolutely incredible. The food was delicious and was able to try so many different things. Having the QR code at our seat if we needed anything brought right to our seat was key. But the best part was the view. Seeing the game so close to the ice was just amazing. Seeing the players and being able to celebrate each goal will be something I will never forget. I will definitely be doing that again!

  • Not my thing
