San Jose Sharks History

The California Golden Seals played at the Oakland Coliseum from 1967–1976 before relocating to Cleveland. While a failure at the box office and on the ice, the Seals sowed the seeds for the Sharks' arrival some 15 years later. With Wayne Gretzky's trade to Los Angeles in 1988, hockey fever spread across non-traditional markets, and San Jose was among the first cities into which the league ventured.

The Sharks initially played at the Cow Palace in Daly City in 1991 before moving into their current home, the SAP Center, in 1993. The new digs agreed with the team, as they experienced an NHL record 58-point increase over the prior season. Early stars such as Sergei Makarov, Pat Falloon and the Latvian duo of Sandis Ozoliņš and Artūrs Irbe gave the Sharks an early level of respectability.

Gaining a reputation as giant-killers, the upstart Sharks dispatched the heavily favored Detroit Red Wings in the 1994 Western Conference Finals and the Presidents' Trophy-winning St. Louis Blues in 2000. The Sharks continued to flirt with success for the next decade, riding the talents of such star players as Owen Nolan, Marco Sturm, Evgeni Nabokov, Patrick Marleau, and Joe Thornton.

The Sharks went on to win the Presidents' Trophy in 2009, and have captured a total of six Pacific Division titles and appeared in the Stanley Cup Playoffs 21 times.

by JustinR on 2/5/19SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

The Sharks did not disappoint last Saturday night, cinching a win in overtime against the Coyotes. The venue itself was well taken care of and had a large variety of food items including a vegan sandwich at Ike's which surprised and delighted me. All and all a wonderful time. Would go again.

  • Good experience

Everything went smoothly except the parking, they have a sign saying $25.00 but when you enter they said it’s only for prepaid parking, no exceptions. They should have a cash entrance too, I think that’s too complicated :((

  • The Tank Rocks

by Will the Conquerer on 12/23/18SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 4 out of 5

The SAP center is a great place to catch a hockey game. It is small enough to have a great view from any seat, yet big enough to not feel crowded. It has large open walkways and a really refreshing assortment of foods to chose from. The only downsides are they have blocked off the entrances into the stadium so the aesthetic look shabby now and inside the lines for food venues can work their way out into the foot traffic around the concourse. The night I was at the game it wasn’t sold out so it wasn’t as loud as I am sure it could be. At times it was downright quiet. The activities director (a blond guy with lots of hair) was flat and not very enthusiastic. I get that everyone has an off night... I guess I caught his. He did come across as a surfer dude with a laid back attitude though. Parking at the stadium is expensive. I recommend parking anywhere else and using a scooter or walking in. Before the game, be sure to hit the San Pedro Market Square to grab some tasty food and drinks and then you can walk from there! Overall... the Tank is a great place to catch just about anything!
