San Jose Sharks History

The California Golden Seals played at the Oakland Coliseum from 1967–1976 before relocating to Cleveland. While a failure at the box office and on the ice, the Seals sowed the seeds for the Sharks' arrival some 15 years later. With Wayne Gretzky's trade to Los Angeles in 1988, hockey fever spread across non-traditional markets, and San Jose was among the first cities into which the league ventured.

The Sharks initially played at the Cow Palace in Daly City in 1991 before moving into their current home, the SAP Center, in 1993. The new digs agreed with the team, as they experienced an NHL record 58-point increase over the prior season. Early stars such as Sergei Makarov, Pat Falloon and the Latvian duo of Sandis Ozoliņš and Artūrs Irbe gave the Sharks an early level of respectability.

Gaining a reputation as giant-killers, the upstart Sharks dispatched the heavily favored Detroit Red Wings in the 1994 Western Conference Finals and the Presidents' Trophy-winning St. Louis Blues in 2000. The Sharks continued to flirt with success for the next decade, riding the talents of such star players as Owen Nolan, Marco Sturm, Evgeni Nabokov, Patrick Marleau, and Joe Thornton.

The Sharks went on to win the Presidents' Trophy in 2009, and have captured a total of six Pacific Division titles and appeared in the Stanley Cup Playoffs 21 times.

  • San Jose Sharks hockey game

by KLESKY on 3/19/19SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

Sat on the glass right behind the goal! Epic time watching the game! Plus the Bmw lounge is amazing... great food and all you can drink. Doesn’t get much better than that!

  • Sharks brought the sparks

by Fuego on 3/14/19SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 4 out of 5

We all received an Evander Kane Bobblehead holding his chihuahua Penelope. The game started at 1pm leaving you time to enjoy the rest of your day after the game. I pre paid for parking. So, I got to park in the ABC Lot right next to the SAP Center. I parked along the area as you enter the parking lot and someone was nice enough to let me get in front of them so that I could exit once the game was over. The Sharks won in overtime and I liked how teal streamers dropped down after the Sharks scored their second goal. I enjoyed how they showed clips of the Sharks playing the Washington DC Capitals and the opportunity to receive a free Sharks jersey if your seat was announced. The crowd in Section 209 was really into the game. This was my second Sharks game and I really enjoyed myself this time around.

  • Dope

Dope experience. Did seat upgrade and sat on the glass. And we won in OT. Real exciting cant wait to go again.

  • Great hockey event, as always

by Pam on 3/13/19SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

You can't beat the Sharks for great family entertainment. Between the game itself and the entertainment, it's something everyone enjoys. Parking can be tricky. There is not enough signage or parking attendants around the stadium to direct to the various parking locations. Last, it is difficult to reach a live agent with Ticketmaster. I had a question about seating and locating the areas with the least amount of steps but I can't reach anyone as the line 800 745-3000 always says "extremely high volume of calls . . . and please call again later".

  • great game -

by hb on 3/13/19SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

Great game - win in overtime. SAP staff was fantastic because while getting to our seats hubby spilled his food right straight down on the floor. Staff personnel went and got replacement food and brought it over to our seats. Thought that was great service. Kudos to them.

  • Shark Fan For Life!

Going to the SAP Center and watching the Sharks play is a memory my wife and I will cherish forever! So much fun, and to many things to see in just one day!

  • Amazing

Whenever your team wins in overtime it is like a trip to a bordello

  • March 9 game

by Kath on 3/12/19SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 3 out of 5

The game was great, good view from our sears BUT the group behind us, ruined much of the game with loud voices, seat kicking our seats and unruly kids. Pretty much done with arena events and inconsiderate fans.

  • Fun night out

by Trimcarpenter on 3/10/19SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 4 out of 5

If your a sports and visiting the Bay Area, go see the Sharks. Unlike other arenas, inexpensive tickets can be found. The fans are great, very friendly and the team is good. There is plenty of parking around the SAP Center and the parking garages in town have event specials.

  • SJSharks At SAP

by Hockey fan on 3/7/19SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

Great team, nice arena, enthusiastic fans. The Sharks played a tight game for 2 periods before breaking the game open in the third. SAP has been upgrading its food options which is great. Had a falafel sandwich at Nick the Greek that was hot and flavorful. Rita’s had a new flavor, island passion, that was really good (beats mango in my opinion). As always the gelati was wonderful. My one down bit in going to the game was parking. Parked at San Pedro lot, and took 20-30minutes to exit (I was on the 3rd level).

by T. P. on 3/5/19SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 4 out of 5

It is always great to see hockey in person. Greatest sport going. Terrific facility. Major hassle to transfer tickets. I only bought them to donate to Veterans Tickets. Tried twice thru Sharks and Vettix without success. Not happy.
