San Jose Sharks History

The California Golden Seals played at the Oakland Coliseum from 1967–1976 before relocating to Cleveland. While a failure at the box office and on the ice, the Seals sowed the seeds for the Sharks' arrival some 15 years later. With Wayne Gretzky's trade to Los Angeles in 1988, hockey fever spread across non-traditional markets, and San Jose was among the first cities into which the league ventured.

The Sharks initially played at the Cow Palace in Daly City in 1991 before moving into their current home, the SAP Center, in 1993. The new digs agreed with the team, as they experienced an NHL record 58-point increase over the prior season. Early stars such as Sergei Makarov, Pat Falloon and the Latvian duo of Sandis Ozoliņš and Artūrs Irbe gave the Sharks an early level of respectability.

Gaining a reputation as giant-killers, the upstart Sharks dispatched the heavily favored Detroit Red Wings in the 1994 Western Conference Finals and the Presidents' Trophy-winning St. Louis Blues in 2000. The Sharks continued to flirt with success for the next decade, riding the talents of such star players as Owen Nolan, Marco Sturm, Evgeni Nabokov, Patrick Marleau, and Joe Thornton.

The Sharks went on to win the Presidents' Trophy in 2009, and have captured a total of six Pacific Division titles and appeared in the Stanley Cup Playoffs 21 times.

  • Disappointed with the Obstructed View

by J. on 4/17/19SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 1 out of 5

We typically purchase tickets in the lower bowl, but for this game we were unsure if we would be able to attend, so we opted for cheaper tickets in section 218 row 3 seats 1 & 2 (in case we had to eat the cost of the tickets). We went to the game and I was not pleased with our seats. The view is completely obstructed by the railing, and it was not mentioned that the views were obstructed when I purchased the tickets. I was 100% unhappy with our seats, and Ticketmaster should notify the buyer of the obstructed views of the game. It ruined the experience of attending our first playoff game.

  • Great show, sad loss

by E. M. on 4/16/19SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 4 out of 5

Sharks always put on good show, venue is always very well organized and the choice of food is awesome. Rally towels are always a nice touch. Great evening, would have been perfect if sharks won.

  • I wish SAP Center wasn't so far away

by R. D. on 4/15/19SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

I drove up from Southern California to go to game 2 of the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs. Barring the 4 1/2 hour drive from my house it really is an easy in and out. Parking was easy. Getting in and out of the building was easy. It's even close to the airport. I think now that I waitied this ling to go to a game in San Jose, I might be going to a few more games there. A lot more fun than seeing the Sharks at somebody else's arena.

  • GO SHARKS!!!

by That Hechim Kid on 4/9/19SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

There's really not a bad seat in the place. If there were only some way to teach people to lean back and not move from their seats while the puck is in play. Newbies.

  • Couldn't ask for more.

by Aaron on 4/9/19SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

From the great pace of this game, to the awesome players on our team, to them thanking us after the game was over and literally giving away the jerseys on their back... this was such a great way to finish off a strong season. Fun all around. These guys love hockey and their fans, and the feeling is mutual. GO SHARKS!!

  • Turn up at the Tank

by cmshazam on 4/9/19SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

The roar of the crowd, the great concessions, the conviently located bathrooms, then all the five aways, on top of watching one of the best teams in NHL?! Awesome!

  • Great play, good food, good sight lines, terrible seat room

by Jiraffe on 4/9/19SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 4 out of 5

Great team, fun to watch. Arena food is good (not great). The sight lines are very good. The spacing between rows of seats is way too short.

  • Sharks vs Avalanche

  • More like minnows than sharks

by 25yearwait on 4/4/19SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 4 out of 5

Great seats but game not so much. I hope playoffs are better.

  • Just OK.

by N. on 4/2/19SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 3 out of 5

The production of the live event was just ok. Expected more fanfare, more “shark” moments that really got the crowd into the moment. Jumbotron not utilized well During power plays - should display timer so excitement builds as time runs out. Just really - ok. Not OMG - glad I spent $170 per seat, paid for parking, fought traffic - to see this. Seating was weird - people constantly up and down blocking view - then can’t lean in chair - during an exciting sports event? Design issue with SAP center. Just underwhelmed.

  • Awesome Venue, Awesome Action

by AidyLeeAndMe on 4/2/19SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

This was our first experience at a hockey game of any kind, and we're hooked! SAP Center is a smallish venue with no bad seats, easy access to parking, and an action packed evening. We'll definitely be back, and I'd attend other events here if the opportunity arose.

  • Amazing

by Wallen on 4/2/19SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

So far this has been the best game I have gone too. Sharks vs Knights is a must go to next year.

by T. B. on 3/31/19SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

  • Geame OK, no bobblehead

by D. S. on 3/28/19SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 3 out of 5

Bought three tickets to this game advertised as a Joe Pavelski bobblehead night, but no bobbleheads given out. Charged more for bobblehad special but not get anything disappointed.

  • Nice atmosphere- Need awning for outdoor security lines

by P. B. on 3/28/19SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 4 out of 5

They set up security outside. It looks like there is enough room inside to do this. ot drenched from the rain collecting and concentrating on the outside structure. If it had to be outside, awnings etc would have been nice.

  • I bought these tickets for my boyfriend for his birthday

by Best seats ever on 3/28/19SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

  • We had a great time

by Carrie on 3/21/19SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

We were there for a birthday and it was my daughters Sharks game! The only way it could have been better is if they had won.
