San Jose Sharks History

The California Golden Seals played at the Oakland Coliseum from 1967–1976 before relocating to Cleveland. While a failure at the box office and on the ice, the Seals sowed the seeds for the Sharks' arrival some 15 years later. With Wayne Gretzky's trade to Los Angeles in 1988, hockey fever spread across non-traditional markets, and San Jose was among the first cities into which the league ventured.

The Sharks initially played at the Cow Palace in Daly City in 1991 before moving into their current home, the SAP Center, in 1993. The new digs agreed with the team, as they experienced an NHL record 58-point increase over the prior season. Early stars such as Sergei Makarov, Pat Falloon and the Latvian duo of Sandis Ozoliņš and Artūrs Irbe gave the Sharks an early level of respectability.

Gaining a reputation as giant-killers, the upstart Sharks dispatched the heavily favored Detroit Red Wings in the 1994 Western Conference Finals and the Presidents' Trophy-winning St. Louis Blues in 2000. The Sharks continued to flirt with success for the next decade, riding the talents of such star players as Owen Nolan, Marco Sturm, Evgeni Nabokov, Patrick Marleau, and Joe Thornton.

The Sharks went on to win the Presidents' Trophy in 2009, and have captured a total of six Pacific Division titles and appeared in the Stanley Cup Playoffs 21 times.

  • Best hockey game I attended in 31 years

by Greg on 4/28/19SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

Went to game 7 against the Knights. This was the most exciting and dramatic hockey game I have ever attended in the 31 years that I have been going to games. I like the Ticketmaster mobile entry where the post scans your QR code and then gives you the green light to walk in. The food selections at SAP Center are much more diverse and creative compared to other arenas. I like the soft, upholstered seats that make it very comfortable in the lower level. This is a loud and exciting building to be in when the crowd gets going.

  • Great!

  • The Best Heart Stopping Experience Ever

by Long time fan of the game.!! on 4/26/19SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

I have seen more Sharks games in the past 28 years then you could shake a stick at. But this one will be the one that stories are made from. For those 17,562 fans, workers and NHL staff that also includes the officials if they were actually watching. That night will be possibly the best storie to be retold over and over again. From the down feeling of a possible end to our season to the rebirth of a whole new one. The energy level in the Tank just seemed to grow at such a rate that it took on another life. One team will always leave the victor the other well the loser. Lets just say San Jose fans left with the out come they were expecting. But as my wife reminds me all the time, it's not over until the Fat Lady sing's and boy did she sing. What a game and I would like to thank the Golden Knights for being a part of History. One team moved on and the other moved over.

  • Sharks V. Vegas

My first professional playoff game (any sport). It was so much fun! The crowd was racuous and fun. The Sharks organization and SAP made it a great atmosphere with the light and sound pre-game show. Would definitely go to another playoff game. The best part was watching the Sharks win!
