San Jose Sharks History

The California Golden Seals played at the Oakland Coliseum from 1967–1976 before relocating to Cleveland. While a failure at the box office and on the ice, the Seals sowed the seeds for the Sharks' arrival some 15 years later. With Wayne Gretzky's trade to Los Angeles in 1988, hockey fever spread across non-traditional markets, and San Jose was among the first cities into which the league ventured.

The Sharks initially played at the Cow Palace in Daly City in 1991 before moving into their current home, the SAP Center, in 1993. The new digs agreed with the team, as they experienced an NHL record 58-point increase over the prior season. Early stars such as Sergei Makarov, Pat Falloon and the Latvian duo of Sandis Ozoliņš and Artūrs Irbe gave the Sharks an early level of respectability.

Gaining a reputation as giant-killers, the upstart Sharks dispatched the heavily favored Detroit Red Wings in the 1994 Western Conference Finals and the Presidents' Trophy-winning St. Louis Blues in 2000. The Sharks continued to flirt with success for the next decade, riding the talents of such star players as Owen Nolan, Marco Sturm, Evgeni Nabokov, Patrick Marleau, and Joe Thornton.

The Sharks went on to win the Presidents' Trophy in 2009, and have captured a total of six Pacific Division titles and appeared in the Stanley Cup Playoffs 21 times.

  • Sharks

Great game, easy tickets to use. The sharks played a great game and the food was pretty decent except the fryer was down and we weren’t told so it took forever to get food.

  • No Freak Hat Night

by LB on 11/30/19SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 1 out of 5

I love the Sharks. But the Freak Hat Promotion Night was a No Freak Hat Night. I paid for these Tickets and for the Promotional Hat that you were suppose to be able to pick up with your special ticket that was mailed. But there were no Hats to pick up. I am a previous season ticket holder and season ticket holders also did not get promotional items unless they had special ticket. Season ticket holders should get all promo items Sharks Promotional Group can do better.

  • Good seats but...

by Peach on 11/19/19SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 3 out of 5

Overall we were happy with our experience at the game. The only problem we had with the seats was the obstruction of the view because of the railing. I know it’s a safety issue and nothing can be done, but maybe add a note associated with the tickets that they are obstructed view seats.

  • Awesome game!

It was an exciting game!! The Sharks won in an overtime shootout. I was literally on the edge of my seat!

great environment, I would refer to friends or go to another game!!

  • Fan Fest or Line Fest

by SharksFan on 9/26/19SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 3 out of 5

I appreciate that the Sharks hold a fan fest, but they really need to come up with a better system. Either make it a 2 day event or limit the tickets sold. The lines for autographs and photos are insane. A 20 minute line is fine, but an hour is unacceptable.

  • Sharks Autograph Fest 2019

by Dodger Knight on 9/25/19SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 1 out of 5

I was disappointed with Sharks Fan Fest 2019 before I entered SAP Center at San Jose because I knew that there were not going to be any player photo booths like the last 2 years. The player photo booths are the primary reason I look forward to Sharks Fan Fest because I like the souvenir hard copy photos with the special designed framing and for posting on social media. This autograph only format for Fan Fest was done in 2014, so I am not buying the "try something new or different" reasoning. Also, I found the Legends Game very compromising. Maybe if the PWHPA players and Sharks Alumni split up in a Teal vs. White showdown. I guess this was the only way to truly showcase the women's hockey players because this is the Bay Area and people wouldn't show up for an exclusive PWHPA event/game. Overall, Sharks Fan Fest seemed more complicated in comparison to years past. The whole reservation system for player panels and on-ice photo opportunities was a total drag, especially since there was little to no enforcement for honoring reservations, so long as you showed your stamped hand from after signing the waiver. PLEASE go back to the 2017 & 2018 format. I don't need to see a team practice, especially since that delayed the players from arriving at the autograph booths. I liked getting to meet players almost immediately after entering the arena. I also believe this year's format also hindered the opening of concession stands; as a result, I did not eat lunch, but instead had a pizza snack at 4:00 PM. I hate to give a 1 star rating to any San Jose Sharks event, but this year's format for Sharks Fan Fest was lousy, especially since I hyped this event to a special guest of mine and the event was not to be as I promoted.

  • Fun!

by Mike on 9/25/19SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 4 out of 5

Got 8 signatures in a day. Had fun watching the events. Wish you could have in and out acess to get to the food trucks outside but maybe next year.

  • Had a fun time

by B. on 9/25/19SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

It was great to see the PWHPA members play! Very nice to see the Sharks having the ladies come to San Jose and play. Would have been better if they had them be part of the other Sharksfest events too.

  • FAN-tastic!!

by Zuppie on 9/25/19SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

Sharks always deliver on the good times and fun events!! My son got Erik Karsslon’s autograph and he values the experience at $5 million. Will go again next year for sure.

  • Alumni vs PWHPA

by Brewdog on 9/25/19SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 4 out of 5

The fan fest was a fun experience. The highlight of fan fest was the Alumni versus the Professional Women’s Hockey Players Association. The game was fun to watch and showcased the excitement that women’s hockey can offer. I wish this part of fan fest would have been promoted better and that the PWHPA would have had a booth with information on the league and sold t-shirts and other promotional items.

  • AMAZEBALLZZ

by Eri370 on 9/24/19SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

I love the venue, its always clean, staff is always super helpful and have great customer service skills. The parking experience is also awesome. The bathrooms are well maintained and always clean. Any seat is a good seat! Security is also always on top of everything. I always feel safe when im at the SAP. The game its self was fun! Saw an amazing goal and the prospects look very promising! The only thing i would love to see is a tip option on receipts. I never carry cash because Im very prone to lose my wallet so a tip option on receipts would be great!

by Q on 5/16/19SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 4 out of 5

The arena has a really good atmosphere for the game however the lines for all of the food, drink, and restrooms were ridiculously long and not worth the wait
