San Jose Sharks History

The California Golden Seals played at the Oakland Coliseum from 1967–1976 before relocating to Cleveland. While a failure at the box office and on the ice, the Seals sowed the seeds for the Sharks' arrival some 15 years later. With Wayne Gretzky's trade to Los Angeles in 1988, hockey fever spread across non-traditional markets, and San Jose was among the first cities into which the league ventured.

The Sharks initially played at the Cow Palace in Daly City in 1991 before moving into their current home, the SAP Center, in 1993. The new digs agreed with the team, as they experienced an NHL record 58-point increase over the prior season. Early stars such as Sergei Makarov, Pat Falloon and the Latvian duo of Sandis Ozoliņš and Artūrs Irbe gave the Sharks an early level of respectability.

Gaining a reputation as giant-killers, the upstart Sharks dispatched the heavily favored Detroit Red Wings in the 1994 Western Conference Finals and the Presidents' Trophy-winning St. Louis Blues in 2000. The Sharks continued to flirt with success for the next decade, riding the talents of such star players as Owen Nolan, Marco Sturm, Evgeni Nabokov, Patrick Marleau, and Joe Thornton.

The Sharks went on to win the Presidents' Trophy in 2009, and have captured a total of six Pacific Division titles and appeared in the Stanley Cup Playoffs 21 times.

  • First time professional hockey game

by Sharon on 2/20/20SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

I have been a Sharks fan for awhile & my grandkids have become interested recently having heard me talking about the games. They had been asking to go to a game and the game against Florida came at the perfect time. A non school day & during the afternoon. Added plus, it was a Family Pack game. I purchased tickets & didn't tell them and was able to keep the secret until just before we pulled into the parking lot! They were totally excited at that point and bouncing up and down in the car. I had put their Sharks shirt & sweatshirt in the trunk the night before, so we could put them on in the parking lot. They were interviewed by INDTVUSA when we first entered the center. We all had so much fun. When I asked if they had fun & would they go again they shouted a big "Yes". I am hoping we can make at least one more before the end of the season. Thank you Sharks for a wonderful memory with my grandson, Jack and granddaughter, Jordan. One we will never forget.

on the spur of the moment, we decided to take a half day off from work and drive to San Jose to atttend a Sharks hockey game; went on the app, found tickets- good ones, actually, that we could afford- made the purchase, and...bingo- tix showed up in the app.. no fuss, no muss...just as its all supposed to work...no technical glitches, not much traffic getting to the Arena either, for a weeknight- and had a very satisfying time.. thank you for helping make it all possible

  • We couldn't see the action!

by L. M. on 2/1/20SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 1 out of 5

I bought three tickets for about $600 in section 101, first row, as a Christmas gift for my son and his fiance. We were so excited with what we thought would be a great experience. There was no indication on your website or seating chart that these expensive seats have almost no visibility. But when we got there we could not see the ice because the opposing team's (Canucks) bench was right in front of us, with players blocking nearly our entire view. We were only a few feet from our live heroes, but we had to watch them remotely on the overhead screen. WHAT A DISAPPOINTMENT!

  • Outstanding Game

by BayAreaLady on 1/15/20SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

We had great seats. The team was fantastic and in spite of some bad calls they won. The love the crowd showed to Pavelski was heartfelt and showed the class and appreciation of the Sharks organization and fans.

  • plastic purse

by carolg on 1/14/20SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 3 out of 5

I hate the fact I had to buy a plastic bag and check in my purse! The bag has no closure on top so i had to hold it the entire game. The seating is to tight and I was uncomfortable and felt Claustrophobic

  • Good not great

by Hky Fan on 1/2/20SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 4 out of 5

Loved the atmosphere the team provided. Didn't like that everyone had to sit with their backs to the seat or be threatened to be kicked out. NO Leaning Forward! Also, very few bathrooms for the amount of people there. All things being equal I had a good time.

  • Parking

by mother6 on 12/31/19SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

So glad i purchased parking. Location was great.... easy in and easy out except out would be helpful for those not familiar with arena if parking attendants use GREEN wands to flag you thru... red usually means stop or don't enter

  • Hockey game

by mother6 on 12/31/19SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 3 out of 5

Seats were difficult to reach... would like to have known number of flights to climb. Very steep and continuous.... especially for seniors and trying to carry food. Never been to SAP before and will know better next time.

Could not see the goal in front of us as we were directly behind it and the person in front of us blocked the view

  • Great Game and atmosphere

by John B on 12/30/19SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

This was my first pro hockey game in over 7 years, as I used to live in Ottawa(home of the Senators( but moved to the UK in 2012. I was so happy just to see an NHL game and it did not disappoint. I would say it was a great game and atmosphere even though the Sharks lost in OT.

Great experience with the venue, food, parking. Just the goals in the empty net were painful to watch.
