San Jose Sharks History

The California Golden Seals played at the Oakland Coliseum from 1967–1976 before relocating to Cleveland. While a failure at the box office and on the ice, the Seals sowed the seeds for the Sharks' arrival some 15 years later. With Wayne Gretzky's trade to Los Angeles in 1988, hockey fever spread across non-traditional markets, and San Jose was among the first cities into which the league ventured.

The Sharks initially played at the Cow Palace in Daly City in 1991 before moving into their current home, the SAP Center, in 1993. The new digs agreed with the team, as they experienced an NHL record 58-point increase over the prior season. Early stars such as Sergei Makarov, Pat Falloon and the Latvian duo of Sandis Ozoliņš and Artūrs Irbe gave the Sharks an early level of respectability.

Gaining a reputation as giant-killers, the upstart Sharks dispatched the heavily favored Detroit Red Wings in the 1994 Western Conference Finals and the Presidents' Trophy-winning St. Louis Blues in 2000. The Sharks continued to flirt with success for the next decade, riding the talents of such star players as Owen Nolan, Marco Sturm, Evgeni Nabokov, Patrick Marleau, and Joe Thornton.

The Sharks went on to win the Presidents' Trophy in 2009, and have captured a total of six Pacific Division titles and appeared in the Stanley Cup Playoffs 21 times.

The Sharks org needs to bring the volume down in the pavilion a bit. Been going to games for years. This is the first time I left with such a feeling of being pounded by an over amped sound system. And I wasn’t the only one in my group with the same complaint. 13-56. All thought it was too much. But the Sharks won a good one vs the Canes, so that’s a huge plus.

  • Sharks Break Losing Streak!

by Vinnie Boomba on 11/25/21SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

Great experience. I think it is fantastic staff is checking/confirming vaccination status. The check in process in quick and very organized, and best yet, the Sharks won!

  • Family night

by D on 11/23/21SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 3 out of 5

We brought our family, some of them for the first time, and got there almost 2 hours prior to game time, in order to get through the lines, and protocols. There were 9 of us, so we needed to be organized. Unfortunately, there was little to direct us to the correct lines and places. After waiting for over 20 minutes in one long line, we discovered - by accident - it was only for people with Clear pass. Since we did not have that, had to then go to end of an even longer line. If we had all gotten to the front of the area and been turned away, our wait would have been extended to nearly game time. We had our vaccination cards/id checked not once, but twice. Which, I think is reassuring. However, would have loved to see more organization upon arrival. Once inside, we had a good experience getting to our seats and food venue. However, 4 chicken tenders, and 5 sodas/water cost $96. This was pretty steep. The game was fun, and we enjoyed the action. I would stress to please be more organized on the outside so that people were not frazzled by the time they got inside.

  • Great Seats

by Cyncell on 11/23/21SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

Parking right across from the front entrance was easy, quick walk across the street. The entry with "Clear" vaccine app was very fast as was the ticket scanning - great! And we had great seats directly behind the goal, row 11 at a great price. Plan to be back later in the season.

  • Tons of fun

by Nharm on 11/10/21SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 4 out of 5

Ticket purchase was easy including parking. Parking management was organized and easy. The only issue was not being able to save the tickets as a photo to my phone. It was difficult to log into my account upon arrival to retrieve the tickets along with everyone else doing so at the same time. Overall though, it was an excellent experience.

Best game ever!!! The experience from purchasing the game tickets to leaving the SAP Center was far beyond perfect. Everything went smoothly. Directions were clear and no surprises at the gate. We knew what to expect prior to arrival.

  • Needs a lot of work

by Flora on 10/19/21SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 3 out of 5

We got in line and nobody checked our health pass. So what's the point of making sure we are vaccinated? The tiny 5x9x2 bag policy is ridiculous. Not sure what's the point of that or has anything to do with Covid? We had to walk around with our giveaway with no bag which is annoying. Also there were no announcement for not leaning forward. The lady next to us got so rude telling the people behind that she paid for her seats and she is going to lean forward and told the couple to go sit somewhere else if they can't see. When did people get so rude? Also I don't see the Blue Coats anywhere walking up and down to help dealing with rude people like that. First game was missing some things that needs to get button down. But GREAT GAME! We Won!

  • Great arena

by gavinsmom17 on 10/12/21SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

We are from Southern California and our Southern California hockey fans. We have always been told by friends to see a game at the SAP Center or shark tank. The arena was clean and a great place to see a hockey game we were impressed by how comfortable the seats were. Even though we are not sharks fans it was a great game and would definitely go to another game.

  • The last game played at the SAP Center

by Y. C. on 3/17/20SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

I flew out to San Jose from Colorado to watch the Avalanche and Sharks game not knowing it would be the last game played in the Shark Tank for the month of March!! On that Sunday, it was epic!! Afterward, I was just glad to get back home to Colorado in the midst of the worst world-wide situation I have ever experienced. My heart goes out to all who have been affected by this pandemic. I know God will deliver us all from this and we will be stronger than ever before!!

  • Big disappointment

by Mark on 3/10/20SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 1 out of 5

We did not attend the game because county health officials advised not to go but yet the game was played...my mom is 75 years old and worried about coronavirus...I wasted $100 on tickets that should be refunded...I have tickets for two more games in the next 3 weeks that I will not attend because of health concerns...If I am not refunded for the 3 games I doubt I will ever attend a sharks game again...big disappointment...hopefully things will be made right

  • Good time except for the final score

by R. E. on 3/8/20SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

This was the first time my younger great grandson, age 5, saw an NHL game, and he had a fantastic time - especially since he's a Minnesota Wild fan. The rest of us, his brother, dad, uncle and I also had a good time but wish the score had gone the other way. We had some of the best seats we've ever had. Now, as long as we don't come down with the virus, we'll give it 5 stars.

  • Great time

by Novamo on 3/6/20SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

We came all the way from the east coast of Canada and really enjoyed ourselves. The SAP Center is amazing, and so are the people who work there. Unfortunately my team lost. 😕

  • Went to Watch Sidney Crosby Play

by NovemberNicole on 3/6/20SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

I love going to the SAP center for the hockey games. While I’m new to hockey, the Sharks have honorarily become my second favorite team - if only because of the convenience of having an NHL ice arena/team so close to where I live. I just drive 45 miles and get to watch all my favorite players and teams! Haha. And while tickets do, naturally, get pretty dang pricey the closer to the ice one wants to sit, I got in row 11 near one of the corners behind the Pen’s goalie for about 140 dollars once all was said and done, and I say it was worth it, overall. Do I like the Pittsburgh Penguins? Not particularly. But did I want to see Sidney Crosby and watch him play, and was I willing to pay extra? Absolutely! I guess you could say I got what I came for, in the best sense. :) And I am very happy!

  • Excellent

by Jayrssll on 3/4/20SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

Bern 34 years since I have seen an NHL game. Great experience!

  • Arena great, but outside??

by Pens fan on 3/3/20SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 4 out of 5

Why are there no outside restaurants/ sports bars/ or even vendors outside? And signage needs to be way better. Ok, but inside the arena all good. Only one level of concourse means crowded rest rooms - “go” before the intermissions!

  • Great Tome

Had an amazing time .. good seats .. good price ...

  • Sharks Game

by SueC on 3/3/20SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 4 out of 5

Started out very frustrated as we could not find the Comerica building to park which was prepaid. Ended up parking close to the restaurant that we ate at. Once we got inside the arena, all of that was forgotten. We had a great time. This was my husbands first Sharks Game, and he really enjoyed it, so we would do this again for sure.
