San Jose Sharks History

The California Golden Seals played at the Oakland Coliseum from 1967–1976 before relocating to Cleveland. While a failure at the box office and on the ice, the Seals sowed the seeds for the Sharks' arrival some 15 years later. With Wayne Gretzky's trade to Los Angeles in 1988, hockey fever spread across non-traditional markets, and San Jose was among the first cities into which the league ventured.

The Sharks initially played at the Cow Palace in Daly City in 1991 before moving into their current home, the SAP Center, in 1993. The new digs agreed with the team, as they experienced an NHL record 58-point increase over the prior season. Early stars such as Sergei Makarov, Pat Falloon and the Latvian duo of Sandis Ozoliņš and Artūrs Irbe gave the Sharks an early level of respectability.

Gaining a reputation as giant-killers, the upstart Sharks dispatched the heavily favored Detroit Red Wings in the 1994 Western Conference Finals and the Presidents' Trophy-winning St. Louis Blues in 2000. The Sharks continued to flirt with success for the next decade, riding the talents of such star players as Owen Nolan, Marco Sturm, Evgeni Nabokov, Patrick Marleau, and Joe Thornton.

The Sharks went on to win the Presidents' Trophy in 2009, and have captured a total of six Pacific Division titles and appeared in the Stanley Cup Playoffs 21 times.

I hadn't been back to the Shark tank in many years so I was very excited to be back. The experience was just like I remembered - the atmosphere is unlike any other sporting event. Go Sharks! Go Teal!

  • Good experience once you get in

Fun game environment. Game is great to watch. Entertainment between action was also fun. Be prepared for very long, very slow entrance waits and unfriendly security staff. If the game is sold out, the stadium is not really prepared and all the lines are long and slow. You can tell they are used to smaller crowds

The game was intense and ended with a brawl. I was sitting at the edge of my seat!

  • A fantastic, first-time experience!

by Bob L on 11/25/25SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

As the title states, it was a fantastic, first-time experience... and I have the Pin to prove it! It's unfortunate that my first-ever Sharks game (or live hockey game at that) had to end in a loss (I don't think the offsides call at the beginning that negated the Sharks' first goal was correct... but I guess that's what happens), but it was still an exciting game! I purchased the game tickets after discussing seating options with a dear friend of mine (whom I brought to the game because she was the reason I even considered going), and I think those seats were excellent! If I decide to go more often (which is highly likely), I will definitely be aiming for the same seats in the future! I thoroughly enjoyed all of the entertainment and atmosphere there in the SAP Center, as the Sharks fans seem like a fun group of people. Now, as great as the whole experience was, it was not without a few drawbacks (none of which soured the experience, but could have been better) 1. The food and drinks (as I had expected) were a bit pricey. $8 for a can of Monster? Really? 2. The speaker system was set up sub-par. I am in events as a Project Manager for a major AV company. And though I wasn't down in front nor way up in the balconies, I had considerable difficulty hearing the announcers or anything that wasn't music. In fact, my seating position should have been near optimal for great audio, but I felt it was severely lacking. 3. Parking. I prepaid with Spot Hero and glad I did. However, even though it was a great parking space, it still took more than an hour to get to the highway from the parking lot... that was about 5 blocks from the highway entrance. But that's a live-and-learn situation, and I'll likely follow my friend's advice in the future (she has attended many more games in the past) and park a bit further away. The game was fun. I had a fantastic time with a fantastic friend. I had a new experience that I am looking forward to repeating in the future. And... I guess I'm a Sharks fan, now!
