San Francisco 49ers History

The San Francisco 49ers were established in 1946 as a member of the All-America Football Conference and later joined the NFL in 1950 when the leagues merged. Tony Morabito, founder of the San Francisco 49ers, was the sports pioneer of the West, bringing San Francisco its first major league team in a professional sports business that was dominated by the East Coast.

By 1979, the 49ers had won three NFC West Division Championships, but with the introduction of quarterback Joe Montana, the team quickly began to dominate the NFL. By 1981, the San Francisco 49ers won their first Super Bowl Championship (XVI) and would go on to repeat their Super Bowl Success in 1984 (XIX), 1988 (XXIII), 1989 (XXIV), and again in 1994 (XXIX).

By 2013, the 49ers once again found themselves playing in a Super Bowl Championship (XLVII) against the Baltimore Ravens. With a surprising loss of 31-34, the San Francisco 49ers left the Super Bowl for the first time without a victory. The team would return to the Super Bowl in 2020 and 2024, but fell in both games to the Kansas City Chiefs. The team has produced a number of notable Hall of Fame players throughout its history, including Bob Saint Clair, Jimmy Johnson, Ronnie Lott, Dave Wilcox, Steve Young, Fred Dean, and Jerry Rice, alongside head coach Bill Walsh.

  • Disappointing outcome at Levi's Stadium

by Gunner on 11/13/25Levi's® Stadium - Santa ClaraRating: 4 out of 5

The overall stadium experience at Rams at 49ers game was a very satisfying one. However, it would have been an outstanding experience had the home team won...GO NINERS!!!

  • Great Experience

by Mike on 11/7/25Levi's® Stadium - Santa ClaraRating: 5 out of 5

Stadium is very nice. Event staff were generally nice and helpful. United Club seats and food court are excellent. Food was good. Drinks were sufficient. Alcohol was reasonably priced. Parking is expensive and traffic around the stadium was heavy and it could have been policed better to keep the flow smoother.

  • 49ers experience a Gold Rush

by Larry on 10/22/25Levi's® Stadium - Santa ClaraRating: 4 out of 5

My wife and I attended the 49ers Falcon game on a Sunday evening with my son and three young children. From start to finish everything was very well done. The signage getting you to parking extremely helpful and very organized. The greeters and guides at every point were helpful and welcoming especially to the children. They made getting around the stadium easy and relaxing. We found our seats and went to the concession area to eat. Food was included in the ticket and was good. Nothing fancy but simple nachos, nuggets, burgers! The kids loved it. Again, every staff person made a point of wishing us a great experience! The seats were fine with both 49er and Falcon fans. Everyone was courteous and fun! The one area that is a challenge of course is the ticket prices. Probably out of reach for many football fans and families who would like to see a game! Overall, great time!

  • Nice day and nice game with a bad ending.

by Michael on 10/4/25Levi's® Stadium - Santa ClaraRating: 5 out of 5

It was our first time in San Francisco and we saw an exciting game. The service was also very good. What we didn't realize was that backpacks were prohibited. So we placed our empty Harley-Davidson backpack under the tire of a car and discussed this with the owner. When we returned, the backpack was unfortunately gone, and even a search with several Americans didn't help. This unfortunately spoiled our enjoyment of the game and the day. We were very sad that we Germans had to experience this.

Took my family it was a blast seeing them enjoy the stadium for the first time. Parking was a nightmare though, and we missed kickoff which was a bummer. Won’t be able to go this time, I have 4 tickets don’t know if anyone wants them. If you want ‘em, hit me up. First come, first served.

  • Wow!

by Aussie's first NFL game on 1/23/25Levi's® Stadium - Santa ClaraRating: 5 out of 5

Coming from Australia, it's always a "must-do"to attend sporting games in the USA. My husband has dreamed of the whole NFL game day experience and it didn't dissappoint! The tailgating was just mind blowing, everyone was incredibly friendly. We were lucky enough to snap a quick photo of my 12 year old son with Jason Kelce, so he was just over the moon about that. We loved the whole day. The US national anthem was incredible to hear live and the fighter jet fly over was unbelievable.

  • Grace in San Francisco

by Dan on 1/2/25Levi's® Stadium - Santa ClaraRating: 5 out of 5

Not only did my team win, as a visitor I was blown away by the kindness of 49ers fans who congratulated me on our win, and wished me the best in the playoffs.
