Still great but site change not good

by pattyperfect on 12/2/11San Diego Museum of Art - San Diego

The innovation and music are still very eXciting but the change of venue to Copley takes the intimacy away and thus the verY thing that made it special.

    It was a blast

by Kellev on 10/22/11San Diego Museum of Art - San Diego

We all had a great time at Culture and Cocktails. As soon as we walked in they handed us a ticket for a drink and a tequilla popsicle. Both were delicious. They had music going, a craft area to make punk rock bracelets (to go with the theme), a photo room with legit cool photos, and a nail salon area. Then to top it off when you were done drinking you could wander around the art museum and check everything out. Such a blast!

    Spanish Art lecture

by Anonymous on 9/18/11San Diego Museum of Art - San Diego

The event was not a lecture, it was a reading. The director of the Spanish art dept at the Museum apparently just discovered the women's movement in art and required the audience to listen to her academic presentation. She read her entire "lecture" and when it was time for questions, did not directly answer them or she give partial answers. Very disappointing.

    Interesting and fun

by SDMarnie on 8/15/11San Diego Museum of Art - San Diego

We saw the exteriors of a number of outstanding older homes with a tour guide who lives in the area and who is, like me, an older native San Diegan. He was not only full of interesting lore but also familiar with the different architectural styles in Mission Hills.

    Not the business!

by MH1975 on 7/24/11San Diego Museum of Art - San Diego

Crowded, hot, and a bunch of people not dressed appropriate for the occasion. I am no snob and would love to bring new blood to museums. However……… I will leave it alone.

    El Greco to Dali

by Artlover90 on 7/23/11San Diego Museum of Art - San Diego

    1. Given a drink ticket...only good for a beer. 2; Music? CD's of mostly drums and played way too loud. 3.Dancing...told it would start at 8:30 by one person, the information desk did not know when anything was scheduled-their copy machine broke down during the day and did not have anything to refer. As we were leaving, several dancers outside in street clothes were doing something like line dance. 4. Advertised food...found the booth but was told it was only for people with a higher level of membership.

    Great venue, good event

by tangofox on 7/23/11San Diego Museum of Art - San Diego

The SDMA is a great place to have an event like this, with the rotating exhibits and being in the heart of Balboa Park. There was a significant wait to get in, even with tickets, and the lobby was packed. There seemed to be fewer people in the galleries, but overall it was a fun night.

    Fun, but WAY too crowded

by MMMMM1232 on 7/23/11San Diego Museum of Art - San Diego

This event was pretty cool, but there were just too many people. We even had to wait in line for about 40 minutes before even getting in to the museum. They should limit the number of tickets to these events.

    Not what U expected

by ElGrecoDali on 7/23/11San Diego Museum of Art - San Diego

I went to this event expecting an artful cultural experience with a little Martini twist. To say that the museum is beautiful and the collections are interesting is an understatement, too bad this event didn't do the art justice. In short, it was busy crowded like a nightclub, just because it is a party you shouldn't fill up the space with the fire department limit, people should be able to move. There were multiple bars mostly cash no signs so you could stand in a line for 20 minutes and be told you can't use ur drink ticket. Oh and ur drink ticket ( good for two signature cocktails as it says on it) gets you to a bar that only serves cheap beer, not even water. The music is tacky for an event of this caliber, DJ spinning club music is nothing new, at an art museum I would like to hear something at least more culturally relevant maybe a live performance? After spending two hrs fighting the crowds I decided I was too tiered to stand in another line for 50 minutes to see the El Greco to Dali collection ( it was a Thursday night after all). So I went home. I have been to cultural cocktails at other museums in other cities, which tend to be a delightful evening where you can have interesting conversations, but this was a surely a culture shock with a can of beer. I will go back to see the collection but don't recommend this event unless ur looking for a night club with really exceptional art hanging on the walls.

The art was amazing! However, the event was poorly executed. There was only one line for the cocktail that they were serving. Anyone who plans parties knows you need to set up several different stations to keep the lines moving and a comfortable flow at an event. Because of the poor planning the front area of the museum was very congested. I do not think we will do this again. We gave our drink tokens away and went home.

    from El Greco to Dali

by GMASANDRA on 7/12/11San Diego Museum of Art - San Diego

The event was very interesting. The presentation by the director of the Capodimonte museum was the least interesting. Perhaps because simultanteous translation does not convey nuances well. It was too technical for a lay audience.

Men Who Tread on the Tigers Tail

by LindaRNnLA on 5/8/11San Diego Museum of Art - San Diego

Professor Pronko was so interesting. His knowledge of Kabuki Theater was all encompassing. We were riveted. He made the movie come alive by explaining key theatrical elements that Kurosawa used in the movie. Please do this again,,,,

    Temps suspendu

by Dottydot on 4/21/11San Diego Museum of Art - San Diego

The show was really great coming from another time scale. I did not want to leave and hoped for it to never stop. Obviously, it had to considering the performances done by the dancers. I am French and I am pretty sure this show would be loved in France.

    Malashock Dance Performance was unforgettable!

by okokokokokokok on 4/12/11San Diego Museum of Art - San Diego

Although the dance performance and music had very little to do with the Japanese Ukiyo-e Woodblock Prints at the present San Diego Museum of Art, as was advertised, it was easily overlooked. The costumes by Zandra Rhodes were perfect, and the dancers nimble and entertaining!

    Another great dance performance

by ModernDanceLover on 4/11/11San Diego Museum of Art - San Diego

John Malashock has choreographed another fascinating work. The costumes and visual effects that serve as scenery are based on motifs from the Japanese print show now at the San Diego Museum of Art, where the dance was staged. The story consists of vignettes from the progress of a dance troupe traveling in Japan. The company rehearses, travels, performs three different times and enjoys an evening on the town. There are comic moments as they try to avoid the authority of the rehearsal master. There are dynamic interactions among the six dancers and lyrical duets of two dancers who are a couple. Malashock Dance continues to present engaging, inventive programs to delight dance devotees.
