San Jose Earthquakes History

The San Jose Earthquakes trace back to the San Jose Clash, one of the 10 original Major League Soccer teams. In a gesture honoring the long history of the city’s former NASL soccer franchise, the name changed to the Earthquakes by the end of the '90s.

The Earthquakes have won the MLS Cup twice, in 2001 and 2003. The team claimed their first Supporters’ Shield for the league’s best record in 2005, and earned their second in 2012 at the height of their “Goonies Era,” which has lived on in Quakes fan culture. The team's anthem, written by South Bay native and Rancid singer Lars Frederiksen, is "Never Say Die."

In 2023, the Earthquakes hired former San Jose forward Luchi Gonzalez as head coach. Gonzalez has adopted a style of play referred to as “Luchi Ball,” which emphasizes possession and counter-pressing, and the Earthquakes subsequently qualified for their first playoff berth since 2020.

San Jose Earthquakes at PayPal Park

In the early days of MLS, the Earthquakes played in San Jose State University's Spartan Stadium. Today they play in PayPal Park, a privately financed, soccer-specific stadium that features a player tracking system similar to the one used by the Quakes' Bay Area neighbors, the Golden State Warriors of the NBA.

Quakes fan culture developed heavily during the team’s mid-’10s “Goonies Era.” The team's anthem, written by South Bay native and Rancid singer Lars Frederiksen, is "Never Say Die" as a nod to The Goonies characters’ famous catchphrase.

  • First visit to Levi stadium to see soccer game

by Matthew on 9/16/25Levi's® Stadium - Santa ClaraRating: 4 out of 5

Stadium was right across from our hotel. Seats were on an upper level facing the upper deck across the field. Upgraded padded seats with an enclosed mini food court and restrooms behind our seats. Good value, and sight lines. Had difficulty finding how to get to the seats (map at the entry gates would have been helpful).

  • Great experience

Great game and experience. The atmosphere was awesome and the concession stands had various food options. Excellent half time performance.

  • Amazing Venue and okay team

by Guero on 7/3/25Rating: 5 out of 5

Quakes have definitely improved over the past years but still have a long way to go before being favorites for a trophy. The Stadium is amazing and really organized inside and out.

  • Earthquakes sucked but Drone Show was great.

    by John R on 7/1/25Stanford Stadium - StanfordRating: 4 out of 5

Quakes have a long way to go. European football need fear not from this crowd of third rate hacks.

  • Messi mania

by Phil v on 5/18/25PayPal Park - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

What a game. Couldn't ask for a more competitive game. Earthquakes showed up to play against a all time best! Messi was the show. San jose made the best of the occasion. Hopefully more events of this caliber are in the books for the future.

  • Clean, Fast, and Fun

by Lou on 4/9/25PayPal Park - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

The overall experience was amazing. Getting in was extremely fast and didn't have wait too long. There was a lot of vendors to choose from as well as food trucks(which I thought was a great addition), our seats were very clean and there was staff all around to help anbd ask questions to.

  • Awesome stadium

by Alexi on 4/1/25PayPal Park - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

The Quakes are mediocre of course, but the stadium and environment are top notch. Always fun to watch a game here!

  • Good ambiance

by ZZ on 2/25/25PayPal Park - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

Good game, good ambiance. Cotton candy vendor gave himself a 25% tip without my consent. The tip should be filled out by the customer not automatically charged by the vendor and hope the customer doesn’t notice.

  • Futbol Spectacular

by SV Futbol on 7/23/24Stanford Stadium - StanfordRating: 5 out of 5

We enjoyed another fun soccer match at Stanford. Great energy, fun vibe, and stunning fireworks display. We try to attend this event (the Classico) each year to cheer on the Quakes. It's a great family event and/or enjoyable date night. Bring the sunscreen!

  • Music is way too loud !

by JD on 7/17/24PayPal Park - San JoseRating: 3 out of 5

I go to a game a year with a couple friends and really look forward to the intimate park and the food. This year the pregame and in game music that was played over the speakers was so loud. I couldn’t even really speak with a friend sitting two seats over. My brother put in his ear plugs and I wished I had some. Turn the volume down so you don’t ruin our hearing. Ridiculous.
