San Antonio Spurs History
The story of the San Antonio Spurs began in the summer of 1973, when a group of local investors leased the Dallas Chaparrals and brought professional basketball to San Antonio. Midway through that first season, the group purchased the team outright, planting the roots of what would become one of the NBA’s most respected franchises.
The Spurs spent their first three seasons in the ABA before joining the NBA in 1976, alongside the Nets, Nuggets, and Pacers. Since entering the league, San Antonio has become a model of sustained success, boasting the second-highest winning percentage (.595) among all NBA teams. Over the decades, the Spurs have captured five NBA championships and 22 division titles.
The team has honored its legends by retiring 10 jersey numbers, including Hall of Famers George "Iceman" Gervin, David Robinson, Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili, and Tony Parker—all of whom helped define generations of Spurs basketball.
The 2025–26 season marks a significant moment in Spurs history. After 29 seasons as head coach, Hall of Famer Gregg Popovich has transitioned into the role of President of Basketball Operations. Stepping into the head coaching role is Mitch Johnson, officially named the 19th head coach in franchise history after serving as acting head coach for the majority of last season.
On the court the Silver and Black are led by NBA All-Stars Victor Wembanyama and De’Aaron Fox. They are joined by Spurs veterans Keldon Johnson, Devin Vassell and Jeremy Sochan while Stephon Castle, the NBA’s 2025 Rookie of the Year, returns for his second season. This summer the Spurs added veteran leadership with the additions of Luke Kornet and Kelly Olynyk. The 2025 NBA Draft brought more young talent to San Antonio, including No. 2 overall pick Dylan Harper and No. 14 pick Carter Bryant.

Everyone at the venue was kind and the game was perfect.
It was a great experience but like any event long long lines for food and drinks but over all had no other complaints enjoyed the scrimmage
As always the game and event center is amazing experience
Always satisfied on how easy had fast Ticket Master to purchase and save my tickets to my phone with wallet too...
Next time I have to get there early we just move here from indiana and that was my son and I first time experience something like that we was way at top he wanted to get a free tee shirt I am going to have to him a live game so he see more and hopefully me the players but over I made my son day cause he didn’t know we was going
We thought the limes were long and would take a long time to get to the doors. We appreciate that safety is a priority. However the people manning the scanner seemed overwhelmed.
It was a great experience to be there in person and interact with the guess.
Spurs have hyped up this season and they delivered with am awesome fan experience. GSG!
Awesome! Filled w anticipation. I've been here since 1989. This is the beginning of another great era. Wemby. Johnson. Vessell. Sochan.
We had the best time! We had some awesome seats . Love the whole atmosphere.
I wanted to thank you for this great experience, you provided for myself, father, husband and son. My son was so excited about this scrimmage and came in from Texas Tech, to attend. Everything was great, did not have to wait in line long, and got great seats. Food was good, and everything provided an inviting environment, when we got into arena. Was great to see Spurs and Wemby play. Can not wait for the regular season. Thank you San Antonio Spurs.
The process was smooth, but the scrimmage left a lot to desire.
The game was awesome. Can’t wait to go back . The food line was long but went fast . The bathroom was clean at all times
Great to preview what and who the Spurs are. The future looks good.
I loved it. Everything was organized and went smoothly. The game was awesome. The players were fun to watch.
I expected mpre discounts and perks for the fans. Only 15% off on merch and half price beers that no one was able to find. All the other prices where the same. 8$ sodas, water. Etc. Game was entretaining.
Wanted to see webby play first hand.Enjoyed being there to see the rest of the team for this year.
When it's FREE, it's CRAZEE! The event was well attended due to Wemby madness. Future free events should warn about same day events at Joe Freeman to avoid the traffic chaos. As long as the area is underdeveloped and transportation/parking options are limited, there will be no future for the Spurs games on the Eastside.
Excited for this New Spurs Season. Hopeful to see how far this New Team will Go!
