    Truncated but Excellent Production

by tristanrobin on 3/9/16Shubert Theatre - New Haven

This was my first experience with the Russian National Ballet Theatre company. I have seen the Bolshoi several times and the Kirov, but after reading a few reviews of this company's production of Prokofiev's ballet and viewed several photos of it, I looked forward to my first attendance. The most important thing first: the dancing was superb - beautifully trained and disciplined performers - dignified, amusing, grand, royal, bawdy - they pulled off all the characterizations without ever sacrificing dance. The leads were (to be expected) marvelous - but some of the secondary characters - especially the Jester, the Stepsisters, and the Faerie Godmother were a complete delight. The settings were simple - but elegant and filled their purpose - as sometimes happens with road companies, the sets didn't quite fill the stage, so the offstage areas were visible and you could see the dancers warming up to come onstage - interesting for a moment or two, but disconcerting and distracting after a short while. The opening use of the scrim was very effective. Two things which were extremely disappointing - not enough to ruin the production (the dancing was just too good for that to happen), but certainly enough to warrant complaint. The choreography was based on the original choreography by Rostislav Zakharov of the Bolshoi who passed away many years ago. What has remained is a bit of a mess. The story has been altered in bizarre ways, so that it no longer makes any real sense (and when "Cinderella" stops making sense, we have problems, Houston!). The old beggar woman who magically transforms into the Blue Faerie Godmother no longer exists - just out of nowhere the Blue Faerie Godmother enters lifted aloft like the Sugar Plum Faerie and you have no idea who she is. Also, there is no explanation who the dragonflies are (or why they're there - although granted, they don't LOOK like dragonflies, just a bunch of ballerinas who show up in Cinderella's kitchen) and there is no introduction of the Princesses of the Seasons - so you don't really know who/what/why they're there. But they all dance very well - so, you go along with it. The book is truncated so drastically almost a third of the second act is just a long series of solos and duets and corps de ballet numbers lined up to fill time. The other negative was the absolute dreadful costume design. I know this is a bad overused cliche ... but, seriously, my high school had better costumes for their school plays. Not only poorly designed (the dullest ballgowns I've ever seen!), but tired and worn out (the tutus were limp and used up and definitely need replacing. They don't even have any 'bounce' left in them). However, as I said at the beginning, in spite of the negatives, it was a grand experience - and I feel badly for the dancers that I can't in good conscience give it a five star rating ... the faults with the production were not their fault. But they did exist. I still recommend seeing this if you get the opportunity - just don't expect to get a magical coach or anything - this is definitely about the dance, and not about the magic of the faerie tale!

    Outstanding

by map0815 on 2/28/15Pensacola Saenger Theatre - Pensacola

Such a wonderful opportunity for a ballet company of this caliber to appear in Pensacola. My husband and I are originally from Annapolis, MD area and grew up being exposed to all of the arts because we were within 60 minutes of Baltimore and Washington. We miss that and we're thrilled that this ballet came here and that we were able to attend! MORE PLEASE!!

The Russian National Ballet was AMAZING

by Hois0029 on 2/28/15Pensacola Saenger Theatre - Pensacola

If this ballet and group of highly talented performers ever comes to your city, I highly recommend it. The dancers were amazing and the show far exceeded my expectations. Overall, very pleasant and enjoyable. The one recommendation is to not bring small children. We sat next to a very sweet guy who brought his young daughter, and while I know his intentions were great and with a good heart, the young child had a really hard time understanding what was going on, and due to the disturbance the child created, they left after the first few dances. I feel bad that he seemed to want to treat his daughter and it didn't work out as planned. It definitely seemed to cater more towards older children and adults. The seats: They were towards the back of the orchestra seating but dead center and allowed for one to view the dances as compositions versus being so close and only able to focus on one dancer.

    Charming Effort!

by Kleiberfan on 2/28/15Pensacola Saenger Theatre - Pensacola

I was surprised at how young these dancers were, but they danced their little tutus and leotards off! (When I say "young," I mean late teens and early twenties.) What is it about these Russians that has produced such great dancers over the ages? Well, I'll tell you: they love their work, they are passionate, and they practice until they bleed, that's what. Their professionalism was underscored when during a pas de deux with The Prince and Cinderella the recorded music died for a minute, but our hardy danseurs continued right through their number. The crowd reacted wildly, not only for their beautiful dancing but for their "the show must go on" attitude. I would certainly recommend these great ladies and gentlemen for a wonderful evening out. Nice evening of classical balllet

by justjwb on 2/28/15Pensacola Saenger Theatre - Pensacola

I thought that the Russian National Ballet Co was good but it seemed that the performance needed a larger stage. The dancers were crowded, the men had to hold back because they would run out of room to dance on the stage, the corps was small. They also seemed to skip some parts that were told in their own program. The music stopped middle of a Pas de Deux. The dancing was great. I enjoyed the evening but seemed like Pensacola got an abbreviated version of their capabilities.

    Not worth the price

by emeraldcoast on 2/28/15Pensacola Saenger Theatre - Pensacola

Maybe I'm a ballet snob but bottom line, if you haver Never seen a ballet, this performance was acceptable. In fact the local audience gave a standing ovation. But having seen ballet in NYC many times, this traveling group was a huge dissappointment. Costumes looked like they were made from clearance iridescent fabric. Dancers were not in unison or symmetrically positioned on stage. Dance was lackluster, unpolished and sloppy.

    Third-Rate Company in Too-Small Venue

by Cavalonja on 2/26/15Saenger Theatre - Pensacola

Several factors combined to make this performance of Cinderella by the Russian National Ballet so awful: plodding, lackluster choreography; technically poor dancers; and a tiny stage that further stifled any spark of artistry or excitement. I was reluctant to pan this because events of this nature are already rare in Pensacola. However, I'd hate for theatergoers potentially unfamiliar with good ballet to come away believing they'd seen the real thing and be turned off ballet completely. This performance was not representative of professional, quality ballet companies and not worth the cost of the ticket.

Cinderella was fine for 1st time ballet experience

by Samnemily on 3/20/13Emens Auditorium - Muncie

This was my 8-yr-old daughter's and my first experience at a live ballet. She thoroughly enjoyed it and was enthralled throughout most of the performance. Some of the dancers were better than others. The clock character was confusing to us and the audience around us. For the first half, many of us wondered why there was a scarecrow from the Wizard of Oz in Cinderella. Overall, it was fine as our first local ballet performance.

    The ballet "Cinderella" was awesome!

by DWA2 on 2/13/13Valley Performing Arts Center - Northridge

There's no better arts experience than seeing the Russian ballet! "Cinderella". This was no exception. The ballet dancers were amazing and told the story, through ballet, as if they were acting it with words. The costumes were great and the music was wonderful. Each ballet dancer was magnificent and perfect. If you enjoy ballet, this is one to see!

    Russian National Ballet Theater Cinderella

by GLBF on 2/12/13Valley Performing Arts Center - Northridge

This was THE worst presentation by a National Dance Company I have ever seen. The choreography was repetitive and boring- the dancers were out of sync at the beginning, the music was heavy and dragged...in all, the only thing worthy was the wicked step mother played in drag. I slept through the whole thing literally-and as a former professional ballet dancer, that is sad. I won't be seeing them again.

    My first Ballet!

by Verom on 2/12/13Valley Performing Arts Center - Northridge

This was my first Ballet and I generally liked it. The dancers were amazing and I loved the back drops. The costumes were beautiful, although I wish Cinderella would have been more glitzy for the ball. My complaints…the music! It was off key at times with the dancing and would have a few hiccups here and there. Also, who knew there would be an international twist on Cinderella? They had dancers wearing traditional clothing from 5 different countries and Cinderella danced with each. Also, the ‘Fairy God Mother’ was a great dancer and performer but man was she skinny!!! I know ballerinas have to be fit and have great form but this girl looked sick and it distracted me from the dance. Other then that, great show =)

A ballet without live music and energy

by Anonymous on 2/12/13Valley Performing Arts Center - Northridge

We expected more energy and better performance from the Russian ballet. The show was almost boring. The absence of live orchestra makes the whole performance even more perfunctory. The ballet dances were slow in motion, the movements were weak and liveless. What a disappointment!

    I've Seen Better

by JaneDoe29 on 2/11/13Valley Performing Arts Center - Northridge

I grew up attending the ballet. I have somewhat high standards. The venue is new and beautiful. My seats were amazing (front of the Loge). This particular ballet is fun and beautiful with a variety of characters with whom you can fall in love. There were some very talented dancers in this company, though, there were about a third who needed a little more time in ballet school before joining a company. The principals danced very well and were true professionals, though the principal who played Aurora on that night was frighteningly thin. A gasp when through the crowd when she made her first appearance. Ballet dancers are usually thin, but muscular, like an athlete. (It is a very difficult job). This woman was SO thin that it looked like she had almost no muscle with which to hold herself up. Granted, she was a beautiful dancer, and was a true master of her craft (down to her fingertips). Her frame was so thin, it was distracting and it took away from her performance. The Lavender Fairy principal performer out-shined the Aurora dancer, in my opinion. Other than that, I enjoyed every minute of the ballet. It is exciting, captivating and full of life. Bravo to the Russian National Ballet Company for a job well done.

    The Russian Ballet Sleeping Beauty

by Marie2119 on 2/11/13Valley Performing Arts Center - Northridge

The dancing was phenominal! The costumes and scenery were wonderful. A great experience all around. We had our picture taken withone of the dancers. We have been to two ballets at the Valley Performing Arts Center and are looking forward to our next. This is a wonderful addition to the community and provides an affordable cultural experience.
